Best mattresses 2026

The best mattress for most UK sleepers is a medium-firm model that keeps your spine aligned in your usual sleeping position, stays cool through the night and comes with a home trial long enough to judge it properly. This ranking compares hybrid, memory foam and traditional pocket-sprung mattresses sold in the UK on comfort, support, temperature, the price of a double and the trial and guarantee behind them, so you can decide which mattress to buy before you order online.

Best mattresses 2026: every pick reviewed

Emma Performance
Emma PerformanceEmma PerformanceEmma Performance
Best overall

Emma Performance

Emma Performance is our clear favourite and the best mattress for most UK sleepers: an AirGrid polymer lattice over memory foam and zoned pocket springs gives medium-firm support with no hammock effect, and it stayed cool in our hands-on test, earning the highest temperature score of the ten (9.4/10).

A double costs £1,209 in the Performance 26, the entry model and the one we tested; the 28 and 30 add depth and price. The 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee let you live with it for more than six months before you decide, and if you sleep hot, or simply want one mattress that does everything well, this is the one to order.

Pros
  • No hammock effect when we slept on it
  • Full refund and free collection within the trial
Cons
  • Premium price, more than the Emma Original Pro
  • Less bounce than a microspring hybrid

Emma Original Pro

Best for back and front sleepers

Emma Original Pro

Most buyers who want Emma quality at a mid-range price should choose the Emma Original Pro, a 27 cm seven-zone hybrid at £799 for a double. In our test it felt firmer than Emma’s own 3 out of 5 rating, which suits back and front sleepers better than light side sleepers.

Pros
  • Graphite-infused foam that stayed cool for us
  • Side handles make it easier to rotate
Cons
  • Firm for sleepers under about 60kg
  • Costs nearly twice the Origin Hybrid

Origin Hybrid

Best value

Origin Hybrid

At £410 for a double, the Origin Hybrid pairs five-zone pocket springs with a zip-off pillow top, and Origin backs it for 15 years, five more than Emma or Simba. Origin rates it 6 to 7 out of 10 for firmness. Its five spring zones are two fewer than the Emma Original Pro’s seven, a difference most sleepers will notice less than the price gap.

Pros
  • Gel-infused IceCool foam, which Origin says runs cooler
  • Free next-day delivery
Cons
  • Old mattress disposal costs £54 extra
  • A new promotion every week, so the price shifts

Best premium pick

TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool

For deep memory-foam contouring, TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool layers 10 cm of TEMPUR material over a 15 cm DuraBase core, and its all-foam build absorbs a partner's movement instead of passing it on through springs. It is also the most expensive double we rank, listed at £2,599 before offers. TEMPUR's 100-night trial asks you to keep it for at least 60 nights before a return, so plan on two months before you judge it.

Pros
  • Zip-off SmartCool cover, washable at 40°C
  • Sold in four feels at the same price
  • Eleven sizes, from 75x200 to 200x200

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Choose the feel that matches how you sleep and compare the price of the size you actually need. A long home trial will tell you more about a mattress than ten minutes in a showroom.”

Start with firmness, matched to how you sleep

Medium-firm is the best-evidenced starting point for most adults. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet by Kovacs and colleagues in 2003, people given a medium-firm mattress had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one, for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and for disability (odds ratio 2.10). Two systematic reviews point the same way, Radwan and colleagues in Sleep Health (2015) across 24 trial reports and Caggiari and colleagues in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (2021) across 39 articles, both concluding that medium-firm best supports comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

Then adjust for position and weight. Side sleepers need give at the shoulder and hip, back and front sleepers a flatter surface, and heavier sleepers a denser or firmer mattress so they do not sink through the comfort layers; our firm and soft mattress rankings cover both ends of the scale. Firmness labels are not standardised between brands. Emma sells the Original Pro as a 3 out of 5, yet it felt firmer in our test, so treat any brand’s label as a starting point and let the home trial settle it.

If you Our pick Why
Sleep on your side DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Softer quilted top (DreamCloud rates it 6 out of 10)
Sleep on your back or front Emma Original Pro Seven zones and a firm, responsive feel

Want a long guarantee on a budget Origin Hybrid Zoned springs and a 15-year guarantee at £410 for a double
Want the cheapest double IKEA Vågstranda Two spring layers at £349, 365 nights (exchange only)
Want a traditional spring mattress Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket 1,200 pocket springs and fibre fillings, made in the UK

Above about 100kg, our mattresses for heavy people ranking compares weight ratings and guarantee limits model by model.

Choose a construction, then compare like with like

Most of the mattresses we rank here are hybrids, pocket springs under foam, which make it easier to change position, give firmer edges and let more air through than an all-foam build. Memory foam, as in the TEMPUR and the Nectar, contours more closely and isolates a partner’s movement; our memory foam mattress comparison goes deeper. Traditional pocket-sprung mattresses such as the Silentnight use fibre fillings instead of thick foam.

10 Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket Pocket sprung, 1,200 springs, fibre fillings 25 Medium to firm £499 60 5 years

Depth and firmness are as each brand states them, except where our own test is noted. The Emma Performance price is for the 26cm model.

Which size to buy

Measure the bed frame before you order, because British sizes are shorter than continental ones. A UK double is 135x190cm, so the 140x200cm mattress many European brands sell will overhang a British frame, and two people sharing a double get 67.5cm each, less than a single bed’s 90cm. If you share with a restless partner, a king or super king is the size that stops you feeling every turn. Most of our ten picks come in all five UK sizes, but the IKEA and the DreamCloud have no small double.

UK size Mattress (cm) Who it suits Our comparison
Single 90x190 One adult, a child’s room or a guest bed Best single mattresses
Small double 120x190 One adult who wants room to spread out Best small double mattresses
Double 135x190 Couples in a smaller bedroom Best double mattresses
King 150x200 Couples who want more width and 10cm more length Best king size mattresses
Super king 180x200 Couples with a restless partner, or a child who climbs in Best super king mattresses

Price the size you need

A double runs from £349 for the IKEA Vågstranda to £2,599 for the TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool at its regular price. Paying more buys deeper foam or a particular feel rather than a longer guarantee, and the Origin Hybrid’s 15 years beat the TEMPUR’s 10.

Use the trial, and know when to replace

Buying a mattress online means you cannot lie on it first, so the home trial does the job of a showroom. Trials on this page range from 60 nights on the Silentnight to 365 nights on the Nectar, DreamCloud and IKEA. Read the terms too. Under IKEA’s “Sleep on it” scheme (checked on 16 October 2026) you can exchange a slept-on mattress once within 365 days but not get your money back, and IKEA charges £25 if it collects the old one. TEMPUR asks you to keep its mattress for at least 60 nights before a return.

The National Bed Federation’s guideline, as reported in 2019, is to replace a mattress every seven to eight years, by which point it has seen around 20,000 hours of use. In the NBF’s 2019 research the average replacement cycle had fallen to 6.9 years, and Simon Williams, the NBF’s marketing manager, told Furniture News: “It would seem that a growing number of consumers are replacing their mattresses every seven years.” The NHS says adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep and lists a comfortable mattress, pillows and covers among its self-help steps for insomnia. If your mattress is still sound but too firm, a mattress topper costs far less than replacing it.

Methodology

How we rate

Each mattress is scored out of 10 for comfort, support, temperature and value, where value weighs the price of a double against the rest of the field together with the trial and guarantee. The overall score starts from those four, weighted 30% comfort, 25% support, 15% temperature and 30% value, then moves a few points for what they miss, chiefly the brand’s standing and after-sales record in the UK, so it is not a plain average. Support is judged against the evidence, set out in the buying guide, that a medium-firm mattress suits most adults.

Two of these mattresses were tested at home in 2026 by Ina, our bedding tester. She unboxed, slept on and photographed the Emma Performance 26 and the Emma Original Pro, and those photos are on their cards. The other eight are ranked on each brand’s UK specification, the price of each size and the trial and guarantee terms, not on a night’s sleep, and we did not weigh, roll or lab-test any of them. The order follows the overall score, and where two models tie the one with the higher support score goes first. Prices, sizes and stock were checked on each brand’s UK website on 28 September 2026, and prices and terms were rechecked on 16 October 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mattress to buy in the UK in 2026?

The Emma Performance is our best mattress overall and the one we recommend first, a medium-firm hybrid with an AirGrid top layer, at £1,209 for a double in the 26cm entry model, with a 200-night trial and a 10-year guarantee. On a smaller budget, the Emma Original Pro and the Origin Hybrid give you zoned pocket springs for much less, and the IKEA Vågstranda is the cheapest double we rank, with each current price on its card.

Which mattress is best for side sleepers?

The DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid is our pick for side sleepers, because its quilted memory-foam top, which DreamCloud rates 6 out of 10, lets the shoulder and hip sink in while the pocket springs keep the spine level. If you also sleep hot, the Emma Performance and its AirGrid top layer suit you better. Our best mattresses for side sleepers ranking compares more options by firmness and body weight.

Which mattress firmness is best for back pain?

A medium-firm mattress has the strongest evidence for back pain, and our back pain and orthopaedic mattress rankings are built on it. In a Lancet trial of 313 adults, a medium-firm mattress (H(s) 5.6 on the European firmness scale, where 1 is firmest) beat a firm one (H(s) 2.3) on pain in bed and disability after 90 days. Two later systematic reviews, covering 24 and 39 studies, reached the same conclusion (Radwan, 2015; Caggiari, 2021).

Which mattress is best if you sleep hot?

The Emma Performance, which scores 9.4 out of 10 for temperature and stayed cool when we slept on it. Its AirGrid polymer lattice lets air move through the top layer instead of trapping heat the way dense memory foam can. Among the other picks, the hybrids let more air through than all-foam builds such as the TEMPUR and the Nectar, which tend to hold more heat, although a gel mattress puts gel-infused foam in the comfort layer to draw heat away from your skin.

Is a hybrid or a memory foam mattress better?

Hybrids such as the Simba Hybrid Pro and Emma Performance suit you if you want bounce, firmer edges and airflow, while memory foam such as the TEMPUR PRO Plus SmartCool or Nectar Classic suits you if you want close contouring and less partner disturbance. Natural latex, a springier third option, is compared in our latex mattress ranking.

What are the best mattress brands in the UK?

Emma, Simba and Origin are the best-known online hybrid brands, each with a 200-night trial, while Nectar and DreamCloud give the longest trials at 365 nights. Silentnight, Hypnos and Sealy are the traditional British makers, sold in bed shops as well as online, and TEMPUR is the premium name in memory foam. Our brand comparisons rank each range model by model: Emma, Simba, Origin, Nectar, Silentnight, Hypnos, Sealy and TEMPUR.

How often should you replace a mattress?

Replace a mattress every seven to eight years, the interval the National Bed Federation gave in 2019 because a mattress has had around 20,000 hours of use by then (Furniture News, 2019). The NBF’s 2019 research put the average UK replacement cycle at 6.9 years.

When is the best time to buy a mattress in the UK?

Black Friday in late November and the bank-holiday weekends, August’s above all, are when Emma, Simba and Nectar typically run their biggest promotions. Origin works differently, releasing a new promotion every Monday by its own account, so its price barely follows the calendar and the length of the trial matters more than the date you buy. Whichever brand you choose, check what a saving is measured against, because Origin’s struck-through price, for example, “represents the combined retail value of the mattress and complimentary items” rather than an earlier price of the mattress alone (checked 16 October 2026).
