“Buy for the guest you actually have. A tri-fold mattress is fine for a sleepover, but anyone staying several nights sleeps better on a folding bed with at least 10cm of mattress between them and the floor.”
Tri-fold mattress or folding bed
A tri-fold mattress is a slab of foam cut into three hinged sections. It unfolds flat on the floor, folds back into a block about a third of its length and costs the least. A folding bed with mattress adds a steel frame, a base and castors, and the bed and mattress fold up together. It is the better choice for older guests or anyone staying more than a couple of nights, because the mattress sits 32 to 41cm off the floor and the base does part of the supporting. Tri-folds win for sleepovers, camping and campervans, and wherever the spare bed has to live in a wardrobe.
Folded sizes and weights are the makers’ own figures, apart from the Vesgantti weight, which comes from its Amazon.co.uk listing.
Depth matters more than the filling
On a mattress that folds, depth decides how long a guest stays comfortable. A 5cm pad works for children, but an adult lying on their side will feel the base under the hip. From 10cm, with a softer comfort layer on top, most adults sleep well for a few nights, and a 15cm tri-fold gives heavier guests more cushioning on a hard floor. If you already own a thin folding bed, a memory foam topper is a cheaper upgrade than a new bed. And if the spare bed is slept in every week, a standard single on a proper frame will outlast any folding option; our single mattress comparison covers those. Jay-Be, which makes three of the folding beds here, sells that kind of everyday mattress too, and our Jay-Be mattress reviews compare its foam-free range.
Check the width, not just the size name
Folding beds are narrower than the bed sizes they are sold under. The Jay-Be Revolution mattress is 68cm wide and the Supreme single 77cm, against 90cm for a UK single (90x190), so a standard single fitted sheet will sit loose. Tri-folds follow UK sizes, from 75x190 small single and 90x190 single to 120x190 small double and 135x190 double. Two guests need a small double. The Supreme small double is 120cm wide, the same as a UK small double mattress, which is snug for two adults.
Fire safety and foam labels
Every mattress sold in the UK falls under the same fire law. Business Companion, the Trading Standards guidance service, puts it this way: “The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover the flammability of upholstered furniture (which includes beds, sofa beds, cushions and mattresses).” It adds that mattresses are covered separately by British Standard BS 7177, the specification for their resistance to ignition. When you buy an imported tri-fold through a marketplace, look for a clear statement that it meets UK fire regulations. CertiPUR-US, which both tri-folds here carry, is a different thing: it covers what the foam is made without and limits VOC emissions to less than 0.5 parts per million, and it says nothing about fire.
Returns when there is no sleep trial
Folding beds rarely come with a sleep trial, so the right to cancel an online order is your safety net. Citizens Advice explains: “You need to tell the seller you don’t want the item within 14 days of receiving it.” Jay-Be’s own policy asks for the bed to come back unused and in its original packaging, so inspect it as you unpack and keep the box until you are sure. In 2019, while the UK still applied EU consumer law, the Court of Justice of the EU ruled in case C-681/17 that the right of withdrawal still applies to a mattress whose protective film has been removed, so unwrapping a mattress to look at it should not by itself cost you the 14 days. The two tri-folds offer 100-night trials instead, each with a minimum period of use before you can send the mattress back.
For a raised guest bed that packs smaller still, look at an air bed. For a bed slept in every night, our best mattresses guide covers the main UK picks.
