Comparison

Best memory foam mattresses

The best memory foam mattress gives you the slow, pressure-relieving contour of visco-elastic foam without trapping heat, sits close to medium-firm and comes with a trial long enough to learn whether the feel suits you. We compare all-foam and memory-foam-topped hybrid mattresses sold in UK sizes on where the memory foam sits, how each build moves heat away, firmness, trial terms and the price of a UK double.

Best memory foam mattresses: top pick in detail

Emma Original
Emma OriginalEmma OriginalEmma Original
Best overall

Emma Original

The Emma Original is the memory foam mattress we recommend to most UK sleepers, because its MemoryAdapt layer sits directly under the cover and gives a real contour over five-zone pocket springs that keep turning over easy. In our own test it felt medium-firm with good motion isolation. A 135x190 double costs £529 with a 200-night trial and a 10-year guarantee.

Pros
  • Memory foam directly under the cover
  • Medium-firm with good motion isolation in our test
  • Springs make turning over easy
  • 200-night trial, 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Hybrid, so less sink than all-foam
  • Can feel firm below about 60 kg
  • No dedicated cooling layer

Best all-foam

Ergoflex 5G

For an all-foam bed, the Ergoflex 5G has the thickest memory foam layer declared among these ten, 9cm of high-density visco-elastic foam over a 5cm airflow layer in a 23cm build. The trade-off is a 30-day trial that asks you to try the mattress for at least 21 days, short for a material that takes getting used to. A double is £528.

Pros
  • 9cm high-density visco-elastic layer
  • CertiPUR and OEKO-TEX certified foam
  • No springs, very little motion transfer
Cons
  • 30-day trial, 21-day minimum
  • One feel, no firmness choice
  • No free trial returns from Northern Ireland

TEMPUR PRO SmartCool

Choose the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool if you want the slow, close contour TEMPUR is known for, from 3cm of Advanced Material over two support foams in a 21cm build, sold in soft, medium, medium firm and firm at one price. Its overall score is a point above the Ergoflex 5G, but a double lists at £2,299, roughly four times as much, which is why it sits third. The SmartCool cover gives a cool first touch, and the 100-night trial asks you to keep the mattress 60 nights before a return.

Pros
  • 3cm TEMPUR Advanced Material
  • Four feels at the same price
  • Zip-off SmartCool cover
  • 11 UK sizes, 75x200 to 200x200

Dormeo Octasmart Plus

Best foam-spring hybrid

Dormeo Octasmart Plus

The Dormeo Octasmart Plus swaps a solid foam core for 9cm of hollow Octaspring foam springs in three zones, which Dormeo says make it eight times more breathable, under about 2cm of memory foam, half the Octasmart Deluxe's layer by Dormeo's own comparison. A double costs £499 with a 200-night trial and an 18-year warranty, though only the first five years are full cover. At 17cm it is the shallowest mattress here, so heavier sleepers reach the springs quickly.

Pros
  • Hollow Octasprings in three zones
  • Memory foam directly under the cover
  • 200-night trial, 18-year warranty
  • Five UK sizes including small double
Cons
  • Only about 2cm of memory foam
  • 17cm, the shallowest here
  • Full warranty cover for five years only

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Decide how much sink you want before you choose a brand, because memory foam directly under the cover gives the classic slow hug while the same foam buried under springier layers mainly adds pressure relief. If you run warm, favour pocket springs or a cooling cover and give yourself a trial of 100 nights or more.”

Where the memory foam sits changes the feel

A memory foam mattress is any mattress whose comfort layer is visco-elastic foam, a material that softens with body heat and moulds slowly to your shape. How much slow sink you feel depends on the layer order. The Emma Original, Ergoflex 5G, both TEMPUR models, the Dormeo Octasmart Plus and the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket put memory foam at or near the top, so the contour is immediate. Nectar, Eve and the Emma Original Classic lay a springier foam above it. All-foam cores absorb a partner’s movement best, while pocket springs move more air and make turning over easier. Our best foam mattresses ranking covers foams without the slow response.

How warm memory foam sleeps

Memory foam softens with body heat, and a dense layer right under you holds that warmth, so if you run hot a hybrid mattress is the safer choice. The layout makes the difference. Pocket springs under the Emma Original and the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket move air through the core, the Silentnight adds breathable borders, and Dormeo’s hollow Octasprings do a similar job inside a foam build. A cooling cover such as TEMPUR’s SmartCool changes the first touch, while the Ergoflex 5G puts a 5cm airflow layer under its memory foam. Emma’s Original Pro adds graphite-infused foam too, but its memory foam sits under two other foams, so we leave it out.

Firmness and back pain

Medium-firm is the band with the best evidence. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given a medium-firm mattress had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one, for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and disability (2.10). A 2021 review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Caggiari et al.) concluded that a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment. If you want a firm memory foam mattress, TEMPUR sells the PRO SmartCool in a firm feel at the same price, Nectar rates its Classic 6.5 out of 10 against the Premier’s 6, and our best firm mattresses ranking covers firmer builds of every type.

Trial length, lifespan and safety

Memory foam feels unlike springs, so if it is your first, choose a brand with a longer sleep trial. Trials here run from 30 days at Ergoflex, which asks for at least 21 days of use first, to 365 nights at Nectar. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, says sleep experts recommend replacing a mattress every seven years, after more than 20,000 hours of use.

For the foam itself, look for CertiPUR. Under the scheme run by the European foam association EUROPUR, label holders’ foams are tested every year by independent laboratories. Ergoflex and Nectar both state CertiPUR-certified foam on their product pages.

Check fire safety too, above all on cheap boxed foam from marketplaces. In the Project Phoenix study published in May 2026, the National Bed Federation and the European Bedding Industries Association tested 101 mattresses on sale in the UK, and 65% of those imported from outside the UK and EU failed the required fire safety standards. Ergoflex and TEMPUR both state compliance with BS 7177, the British Standard that tests a finished mattress for smouldering and flaming ignition.

Which memory foam mattress for which sleeper

If you are Start with Why
A warm sleeper who still wants memory foam Emma Original or Ergoflex 5G Pocket springs under the Emma, a 5cm airflow layer under the Ergoflex foam
Sharing a bed with a restless partner Ergoflex 5G or Nectar Premier All-foam cores with no springs to pass movement across the bed
A side sleeper Nectar Premier or Emma Original Classic Nectar rates the Premier 6 of 10, softer than the Classic; the Emma has shoulder and hip cut-outs
A back or front sleeper Emma Original or Nectar Classic Medium firm, 4 of 5 on Emma’s scale and 6.5 of 10 on Nectar’s
Trying memory foam for the first time Nectar Premier or Nectar Classic 365-night home trial with free collection
Heavier, or using an adjustable base TEMPUR PRO SmartCool TEMPUR quotes about 150kg (23 stone) per side and sells 11 UK sizes including 75x200; Ergoflex advises up to 18 stone (114kg) per person
Wanting all-foam with more airflow Dormeo Octasmart Plus Hollow Octaspring foam springs, which Dormeo says make it eight times more breathable
Buying on a tight budget Nectar Classic £199 for a single, £449 for a double

Latex has its own latex mattress ranking, best mattresses 2026 ranks every construction together, and our TEMPUR comparison covers that brand’s full memory foam range.

Methodology

How we rate

This ranking judges memory foam mattresses on what decides whether the material works for you. Every product carries our five scores out of 100 (comfort, support, temperature, value and overall). The overall score weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%, with a small adjustment for a brand’s standing in the UK market.

What decides the order on this page

  • Where the memory foam sits. A layer directly under the cover gives the slow contour buyers expect, so a mattress that hides its memory foam under springier foams ranks lower here than its overall score alone would place it, and one that buries it under two other foams, such as the Emma Original Pro, is left out. We read the layer order from each maker’s UK product page.
  • Heat. Memory foam can hold warmth, so we credit builds that move air or cool the surface, such as pocket springs, breathable borders, hollow foam springs and cooling covers, read from each maker’s UK product page.
  • Firmness. Medium-firm scores higher for support, in line with the randomised trial by Kovacs et al. in The Lancet (2003).
  • Trial and guarantee. Memory foam takes getting used to, so trial nights, return conditions and guarantee years count toward value.
  • Price of a UK double (135x190), the size we use to compare like with like.

Prices, sizes and stock were checked on the sellers’ UK pages on 28 September 2026. Where a higher-scoring mattress sits below a lower-scoring one, its summary gives the reason. Our editor tested the Emma Original at home; the other places rest on verified specifications and our price and availability checks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best memory foam mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original is our best memory foam mattress for most UK sleepers, a 25cm hybrid with MemoryAdapt foam directly under the cover and five-zone pocket springs below, priced at £529 for a double. If you want an all-foam mattress, the Ergoflex 5G with its 9cm visco-elastic top layer is our second pick, and both arrive rolled, like every model in our mattress in a box ranking.

Do memory foam mattresses sleep hot?

They can, because memory foam softens with body heat and a dense layer keeps that warmth close to you. If you run warm, choose a build that moves air: pocket springs under the foam, as in the Emma Original and the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket, the Ergoflex 5G's airflow layer, Dormeo's hollow Octasprings, or a cooling cover such as TEMPUR's SmartCool. All-foam cores such as the Nectar and Eve absorb a partner's movement best but let less air through than springs.

How long does a memory foam mattress last?

The National Bed Federation's Bed Advice UK site says sleep experts recommend a new mattress every seven years, after more than 20,000 hours of use, and that applies to memory foam too. Guarantees on the ten mattresses here run from 5 years on the Silentnight Memory 1000 Pocket to Nectar's Forever Warranty, and most sit at 10 years.

Is a memory foam mattress good for back pain?

A medium-firm one has the best evidence. In a Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, a medium-firm mattress beat a firm one after 90 days for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and disability (2.10). Most picks here, including the Emma Original and Nectar Classic, are sold as medium-firm.

What is the best single memory foam mattress?

For a 90x190 single, the Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress is the cheapest we rank at £199, and the Ergoflex 5G and Emma Original singles both cost £369. The Ergoflex packs the most memory foam into that price, a 9cm visco-elastic layer. Skip the TEMPUR EASE 20 if your frame is a standard single, because it comes only as a 90x200 long single.

Is a memory foam mattress topper a cheaper alternative?

A topper changes the feel of a mattress but cannot fix one that sags. If yours is still sound and simply too firm, a memory foam topper adds a contouring layer for far less than a new mattress. Our best memory foam mattress toppers comparison ranks them by depth, density and price.

Can you get a firm memory foam mattress?

Yes. TEMPUR sells the PRO SmartCool in a firm feel at the same price as its softer versions, and Nectar rates its Classic Memory Foam 6.5 out of 10. Firm is not automatically better for backs, since the Kovacs trial found medium-firm gave better results than firm.

Are memory foam mattresses safe to sleep on?

A memory foam mattress is safe when its foam is certified and the finished mattress meets UK fire rules. Look for CertiPUR, which the Ergoflex 5G and both Nectar mattresses state on their product pages, since under EUROPUR's CertiPUR scheme label holders' foams are tested every year by independent laboratories. For fire safety look for BS 7177, because in the 2026 Project Phoenix tests by the National Bed Federation and the European Bedding Industries Association, 65% of the mattresses imported from outside the UK and EU failed UK fire safety standards.
