The Emma Original Classic is the all-foam member of Emma’s Original line: 25 cm of Airgocell, MemoryAdapt and SupportBase foam with no springs, sold from £449 in a UK single. It costs more than the hybrid Emma Original in every size, so it makes sense only if you specifically want the hugging, bounce-free feel of foam.

What is inside the Original Classic

Emma’s Original Classic product page lists three foams under a zip-off cover. The base foam has cut-outs at the shoulder and hip zones so the mattress flexes where a side sleeper presses hardest.

Layer Material What Emma says it does
Cover 100% polyester Removable, washable at 40°C
Airgocell Point-elastic open-cell foam Releases humidity, keeps the surface fresh
MemoryAdapt Memory foam Moulds to the body, absorbs movement
SupportBase High-density foam with cut-outs Support, with give at shoulders and hips

Feel and firmness

Emma describes the feel as gently cushioning and hugging, with balanced support, and gives no number. From the build, memory foam near the top over a single support foam, we place it at medium, 5 on our 1 to 10 scale. Expect more sink than on Emma’s spring models and very little motion transfer, which light sleepers who share a bed will appreciate. Emma does not state a weight limit.

A softer, hugging foam is not the evidence-backed default for back pain. A systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan et al., 2015) found medium-firm, self-adjusted mattresses best for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment. Back and front sleepers are better served by the medium-firm Emma Original.

Temperature

An all-foam core breathes less than a pocket spring unit, and the Classic has no cooling layer. Emma’s own comparison makes the point. On its Original Pro page it says the Pro absorbs heat up to 10% faster than the Original Classic, in a thermal insulation test by an accredited institute in Kiel in 2026. Hot sleepers should take that seriously, since heat under bedding increases wakefulness, according to a review by Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno (2012).

Delivery and finish: what we saw with the Emma Original

We tested the hybrid Emma Original at home, which looks the same as the Original Classic from the outside. The difference is inside: the Classic has no springs, so its feel and support are not those of the Original and we do not judge them from that test.

What does carry over is the delivery. The mattress arrives rolled and vacuum-packed in a box one person can carry to the bedroom. Unroll it on the base and give it a few hours before sleeping on it, so it reaches its full 25 cm and the cover smooths out.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Pick the Original Classic only if you know you prefer the enveloping, quiet feel of all-foam and dislike springs. Otherwise the hybrid Emma Original costs less in every UK size and gives you more airflow and support.”
