Comparison

Best single mattresses

A UK single mattress measures 90x190, and the right one depends less on the brand than on who will sleep on it, whether that is a growing child, a teenager, an adult sleeping alone or an occasional guest. This ranking compares single mattresses on support, firmness, depth, trial and the price of the single size itself, and shows which models also come as a 75cm small single or a 200cm European single for taller sleepers.

Emma Original

The Emma Original is the single we recommend to most buyers, a 25cm hybrid with memory foam over five-zone pocket springs at £369 in 90x190. In our own test it sat at 6 on our 1 to 10 firmness scale and the springs kept the middle from dipping. Sleepers under about 60kg, many children among them, may find it on the firm side, which the 200-night trial gives you time to judge.

Pros
  • Five-zone springs kept the centre level in our test
  • Medium-firm, 6 of 10 on our scale
  • Zip-off cover washes at 40°C
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Can feel firm below about 60kg
  • No small single or European single
  • Our test sample predates the 2026 update

Budget pick

Emma Original Lite

For a child's room, a student let or a spare bed, the Emma Original Lite costs £199 as a single and still has pocket springs under its foam. Emma lists the single at 18.7kg and 22cm deep, light enough for one adult to carry up to a box room, with the same 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee as the Original. Broad-shouldered side sleepers will miss the memory foam, since the Lite has only soft foam over three spring zones.

Pros
  • 18.7kg single, easy to carry upstairs
  • Pocket springs under open-cell foam
  • Wraparound foam edge for sitting
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Only three support zones
  • No memory foam, thinner cushioning
  • No small single or European single

Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress
Simba Hybrid Pro MattressSimba Hybrid Pro MattressSimba Hybrid Pro Mattress
Premium pick

Simba Hybrid Pro Mattress

At a regular £899 for a 90x190 single, the Simba Hybrid Pro is the dearest and most heavily built mattress here, 28cm deep with Aerocoil microsprings and British wool over a steel SupportCore base. That build makes sense for an adult who sleeps alone every night and sits on the edge to dress, far less for a guest room. It outscores both Emma models above it and ranks below them only because a single costs much more.

Pros
  • Steel SupportCore base firms the edges
  • Wool and microsprings under a zip-off top
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Dearest single in this ranking
  • No small single or European single
  • More mattress than a spare room needs

Origin Hybrid
Origin HybridOrigin HybridOrigin Hybrid
Best for back and front sleepers

Origin Hybrid

On score the Origin Hybrid matches the Simba Hybrid Pro, yet a single costs £265 and comes with a 15-year warranty, the longest here, plus a 200-night trial. Origin rates the feel 6 to 7 out of 10 and lists the single at 21.8kg, so it suits back and front sleepers who want a firmer single than the Emmas. It sits fourth rather than higher because the top three places go to brands with an affiliate programme on the networks we use, and we have found none for Origin.

Pros
  • 15-year warranty, the longest in this ranking
  • 6 to 7 of 10 firmness, stated by Origin
  • Zip-off cover washes at 40°C
Cons
  • Firmer than light side sleepers may like
  • Five spring zones, not seven
  • Old mattress disposal costs £54 extra

Best for taller sleepers

Simba Hybrid Mattress

Tall teenagers and adults over about 180cm should look at the Simba Hybrid, which is also sold as a 90x200 European single at £699. It is a 25cm medium-firm hybrid with Aerocoil microsprings over a nine-zone foam base, and Simba lists the standard 90x190 single at £699.

Pros
  • European single 90x200 in the range
  • Nine-zone base, firmer under the hips
  • Zip-off top cover is machine washable
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Foam base, softer edges than the Pro
  • Pricier single than the Emma Original

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a single for the person who will sleep on it most nights, not for the spare room it might one day become. A teenager or an adult sleeping alone needs the same medium-firm support as anyone in a double, and in a single it costs far less.”

Single, small single or European single?

The standard UK single is 90 x 190cm. The small single is 15cm narrower at 75 x 190cm, and the European single is 10cm longer at 90 x 200cm. Length is the measurement to watch for a teenager who is still growing, and the National Bed Federation’s size guide gives a simple rule for it.

“We advise buying one that’s at least 10cm longer than the tallest person.”

On that rule a 190cm single suits sleepers up to about 180cm (5ft 11in). A European single needs a frame built for 200cm and 90 x 200cm sheets, so measure the bed before you order one.

UK size Size (cm) Imperial Tallest sleeper (NBF 10cm rule) Typical use Picks in this ranking
Small single 75 x 190 2ft 6in x 6ft 3in 180cm Younger children, box rooms, studies Starlight 09
Single 90 x 190 3ft x 6ft 3in 180cm Children, teenagers, one adult All ten
European single 90 x 200 3ft x 6ft 6in 190cm Taller teenagers and adults Simba Hybrid, OTTY Original Hybrid

Who will sleep on it?

A single does several jobs. The NBF describes the small single as mainly suited to younger children and a good first bed after a cot, which is where the Starlight 09 and the Emma Original Lite fit. Teenagers and adults who sleep alone every night need the same support as anyone in a double, and that is the case for the Emma Original, the Origin Hybrid and the Simba Hybrid Pro. A guest room used a few weeks a year does not justify a premium hybrid, so the IKEA Valevåg and the Nectar Classic Memory Foam are the sensible buys there. Couples who sleep in separate beds buy singles too, and the same NBF guide cites the Sleep Council’s 2017 Great British Bedtime Report, in which 12% said they slept apart, against 8% in 2013.

Firmness and support

Medium-firm is the right starting point for almost anyone who sleeps on a single night after night. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, published in The Lancet by Kovacs and colleagues in 2003, the group given medium-firm mattresses did better after 90 days than the group on firm ones, with odds ratios of 2.36 for pain in bed and 2.10 for disability. The authors concluded that “a mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain”.

All ten singles here are sold as medium or medium-firm, but every maker uses its own scale. OTTY rates its hybrid 7 out of 10, Origin 6 to 7 and Nectar 6.5, Emma gives both its models 4 out of 5, and we put the Emma Original at 6 on our own 1 to 10 scale when we tested it. Lighter sleepers, children included, sink less into the same mattress, so a medium-firm single feels firmer to them than to an adult. Maker labels are only a rough guide. IKEA sells the Valevåg in medium firm and firm, and the medium firm version is the one ranked here.

Depth, weight and bedding

Depth runs from 22cm on the Emma Original Lite and the Starlight 09 to 28cm on the Simba Hybrid Pro. The deeper mattresses need a deep-pocket single fitted sheet. Weight counts when a mattress has to go up a narrow staircase into a box room or a loft bedroom. Emma lists the Original Lite single at 18.7kg, Origin its Hybrid single at 21.8kg and Nectar the Classic single at 22.2kg. Any mattress here fits a standard UK single divan or bed frame, so the base and the mattress can be bought separately.

Trial, guarantee and value

Service terms vary more than the prices. Starlight offers no sleep trial, Silentnight a 60-night exchange and OTTY 100 nights, while Emma, Simba and Origin give 200 nights, Nectar 365 and IKEA a 365-night exchange. Guarantees run from 5 years at Silentnight to 15 years at Origin. The Sleep Charity and Bed Advice UK suggest asking whether a mattress needs replacing once it is seven to 10 years old. The NBF calculates that every £100 spent on a new bed costs just 3.9p a night over seven years, so the single a teenager sleeps on every night deserves more of the budget than a spare bed.

If the room takes a wider bed, see our small double, double, king size and super king rankings, and for every size our best mattresses ranking.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress here is ranked as a single, in the standard UK 90 x 190cm size, and every one is on sale in that size today. The overall score starts from comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%, then is adjusted for the brand’s UK market presence and affiliate status, so it is not a strict weighted average. On this page value means the price of the single itself, read together with the trial and the guarantee, because singles are often bought for a child, a student or a guest room on a tighter budget than a double. Support covers the spring unit or zoned base and the edge, since a 90cm mattress leaves little room to move away from the side. Firmness comes from each maker’s own scale, read against the clinical evidence for medium-firm set out in the buying guide.

Single prices, sizes and stock were read from each maker’s UK shop on 28 September 2026, and the prices in the summaries update from our product records when a price changes. The Emma Original has also been tested hands-on by our team, and its score reflects that test. The top three places go to brands with an affiliate programme on the networks we use, which can earn us a commission, and below them the order follows the score. Two rows sit below lower-scored models, the Simba Hybrid Pro at number three and the Origin Hybrid at number four, both under the two Emmas, and each card explains why.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a single mattress in the UK?

A UK single mattress is 90 x 190cm, or 3ft x 6ft 3in. A small single is 75 x 190cm and a European single 90 x 200cm, 10cm longer, so check which size your bed frame takes before ordering.

What is the best single mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original is our top single mattress, a 25cm medium-firm hybrid that we have tested ourselves and that costs £369 in 90 x 190cm. For a child's room or a spare bed the Emma Original Lite at £199 is the better buy, and the IKEA Valevåg at £149 is the cheapest single in this ranking.

Is a single mattress big enough for an adult?

A 90 x 190cm single is big enough for most adults sleeping alone. The National Bed Federation advises a mattress at least 10cm longer than the tallest sleeper, which limits a 190cm single to about 180cm. Taller sleepers should choose a 90 x 200cm European single, which the Simba Hybrid sells for £699 and the OTTY Original Hybrid for £524.99.

What is a small single mattress used for?

A small single mattress measures 75 x 190cm, 15cm narrower than a standard single, and the National Bed Federation says it is mainly suited to younger children as a first bed after a cot. In this ranking the Starlight 09 is the small single option, at £146.99.

Should I buy a firm single mattress?

Most people do better on a medium-firm single than a firm one. In a 2003 Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, those given medium-firm mattresses had better results after 90 days than those on firm ones, with an odds ratio of 2.36 for pain in bed. If you still prefer a firmer feel, OTTY rates its Original Hybrid 7 out of 10, Origin puts its Hybrid at 6 to 7, and our firm mattress comparison ranks the firmest models.

How much should I spend on a single mattress?

Singles in this ranking run from £149 for the IKEA Valevåg to £899 for the Simba Hybrid Pro, and £200 to £400 buys a well-made single for everyday use. The National Bed Federation calculates that every £100 spent on a new bed costs 3.9p a night over seven years, which is why a bed slept on every night justifies more than a spare bed.

Do I need a mattress topper for a single bed?

A new single mattress should not need a topper, and every mattress in this ranking except the Starlight 09 comes with a trial or exchange of 60 to 365 nights if the feel turns out wrong. A topper is better used to soften or refresh an older mattress, and our mattress topper comparison ranks the current options. For a child's or guest bed, a 90 x 190cm waterproof protector keeps spills off the new mattress, and our mattress protector comparison lists single sizes.

How often should a single mattress be replaced?

Check a single mattress for replacement once it is seven to 10 years old, the age at which The Sleep Charity and Bed Advice UK suggest asking the question. Guarantees in this ranking run from 5 years on the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1000 Pocket to 15 years on the Origin Hybrid.
