The OTTY Original Hybrid is a 25cm hybrid mattress that OTTY rates 7 out of 10 for firmness, built on up to 2,000 encapsulated pocket springs that are each 16cm tall. It is the brand’s flagship and the base most of the range is derived from, since the Ice, the Pure and the Pure Pro all reuse its spring unit. Prices start at £499.99 for a single and £624.99 for a double (September 2026), mid-market for a UK bed-in-a-box hybrid.

How the Original Hybrid is built

OTTY lists six layers on its Original Hybrid product page. Small perforations through the foam and the side supports form what OTTY calls its Airflow system, which lets warm air escape as the springs compress.

Layer Material What it does
1 Thick knitted cover, removable (dry clean only) Soft sleeping surface
2 Heat-regulating memory foam Pressure relief at shoulders and hips
3 High-density reflex foam Extra support above the springs
4 Up to 2,000 encapsulated pocket springs, 16cm tall Main support, limits motion transfer
5 Perforated foam side supports Firmer edge and ventilation
6 High-density base foam Stable foundation

What The Guardian found

In The Guardian’s review (March 2025), Filter reviewer Jane Hoskyn slept on a double for two months and measured a maximum sinkage of 25mm under a 7.5kg weight, closer to the firmest mattress she had tested (18mm) than the softest (40mm). Her family panel gave it 8.3 out of 10 for overall comfort, the best of the six mattresses they compared. She also named its weak point: “Edge and corner support could be much improved.” The firmness verdict split the panel. Hoskyn, a petite side sleeper, found enough cushioning at the shoulder and hip, while her 84-year-old father was the one panel member who found it too hard on his joints.

Who it suits

At 7 out of 10 the Original Hybrid suits back sleepers, front sleepers and couples who want each side supported separately. That medium-firm band is also where the evidence points for back pain. A randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet in 2003 (Kovacs et al.), found that people given medium-firm mattresses had less pain and disability after 90 days than those given firm ones. The trial rated firmness on a European standard scale (5.6 for the medium-firm group, 2.3 for the firm group, where 1 is firmest), not on OTTY’s own scale, so read the match as approximate. Light side sleepers who want more sink are better served by the softer Pure+ (5.5 out of 10).

Sizes and prices

The Original is sold in nine sizes, more than any other OTTY mattress, including the 90x200 EU single and the 200x200 Emperor.

UK size Dimensions (cm) Price (September 2026)
Single 90 x 190 £499.99
EU single 90 x 200 £524.99
Small double 120 x 190 £599.99
Double 135 x 190 £624.99
EU double 140 x 200 £649.99
King 150 x 200 £699.99
EU king 160 x 200 £724.99
Super king 180 x 200 £799.99
Emperor 200 x 200 £849.99

The cover comes off but is dry clean only, less practical than the machine-washable covers on the Aura, the Ice and the Pure range. The Original is not designed to be flipped; OTTY asks you to rotate it head to toe once a month for the first 12 months, then every three months. The 100-night trial allows an exchange or a full refund once you have slept on it for at least 30 nights, and the 10-year guarantee covers manufacturing defects. Two-person delivery is free to mainland UK addresses and usually takes 2 to 4 working days (up to 10 in parts of Scotland); delivery to Northern Ireland costs £60. Room-of-choice delivery adds £10 and old mattress collection £40.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Original Hybrid is the sensible default in the OTTY range, with 16cm springs, a 7/10 feel and nine sizes starting at £499.99 for a single. Buy it if you sleep on your back or front or share the bed; pick the Pure+ if you are a light side sleeper and the Ice or Pure if you run hot.”
