“Buy a topper to change how a sound mattress feels, not to rescue one that sags. If you can see a dip where you sleep when the bed is empty, spend the money on a new mattress instead.”
Check whether a topper can fix your bed
A topper changes how the surface of a bed feels; it does not restore support a mattress has lost, so if yours already sags or has softened a lot over time, a new mattress is usually the better buy. National Bed Federation research reported in 2019 put the average UK mattress replacement cycle at 6.9 years, and the NBF advises replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, by which time it has seen around 20,000 hours of use (Furniture News, April 2019). A younger mattress that simply feels too hard is where a topper earns its price. If yours is older and dips where you lie, look at the best mattresses of 2026 instead.
Match the filling to the problem
Memory foam moulds around shoulders and hips, which suits side sleepers on a firm mattress, though dense foam can feel warm. The graphite-infused foam of the Emma Original Pro pushes back instead of hugging, and it stayed cool in our hands-on test. Foam over micro-springs, as in the Panda Hybrid Bamboo and the Simba Hybrid, adds lift to a mattress that feels flat and makes turning over easier. Dormeo’s Octaspring toppers get a similar lift from foam springs, compared in our Dormeo topper ranking. Wool, hollowfibre and feather and down trade support for loft, so the four fibre toppers here score 6.2 to 6.6 out of 10 for support in our ratings, against 7.6 to 8.6 for the six foams and hybrids.
Heat matters. A review of sleep research in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that, where bedding and clothing are used, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. For back pain, in a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people given medium-firm mattresses (5.6 on the European H(s) scale, where 1 is firmest and 10 softest) had better results for pain in bed, pain on rising and disability after 90 days than people given firm ones (2.3). Softening an over-firm mattress towards medium-firm is a reasonable step, not a treatment.
Depth, sizes and fitting
Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, sets a clear minimum for depth: “aim for one that’s at least 5 cm (2 inches) deep. Anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference in comfort.” Eight of the ten toppers ranked here meet it. The Dorma Full Forever starts at 3cm, so buy its 6cm version if you want a real change, and the Woolroom Deluxe holds 4 to 5cm of wool. Measure mattress plus topper before you buy fitted sheets. Woolroom’s straps fit mattresses up to 35cm deep, Dorma’s up to 30cm. For spills, add one of the mattress protectors we rank.
For a single bed, buy the UK single (90x190) unless your mattress is the longer EU single (90x200), which Panda and Woolroom also sell. None of the ten sellers lists a UK small single (75x190) for these toppers, so a narrow bunk or daybed needs a topper made in that size. The TEMPUR ONE starts at a double, and the Soak&Sleep small double was out of stock when we checked on 28 September 2026. See also our memory foam, latex and bamboo topper rankings and the double, king size and super king topper comparisons.
Regular prices per size, checked on 28 September 2026 before any sale, so a card above can show less; Dorma at 3cm. Feel is the maker’s rating, otherwise our estimate.
Price and returns
Filling sets the price more than depth. At full price a double costs £46 in hollowfibre, £139.95 in Panda memory foam, £339.95 with micro-springs and £549 from TEMPUR. Many retailers treat toppers as sealed hygiene goods, and regulation 28(3)(a) of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 ends the right to cancel an online order for sealed goods “not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons” once they are unsealed after delivery. Short of a fault, a brand trial is the only way to send back a topper you have slept on. Simba offers 200 nights and Emma lists 100, Panda (bought direct), TEMPUR and Woolroom give 30, and Silentnight, Soak&Sleep and Dunelm (for Dorma) take back unused toppers only.
