Comparison

Best king size mattress toppers

The best king size mattress topper for a British bed is cut to the UK king of 150x200cm, deep enough to change the feel for two people, and sold with a trial or a clear returns route, because most toppers cannot be sent back once they have been slept on. We rank each mattress topper for king size beds on those points, plus heat, grip on a mattress 150cm wide and the price in king rather than in the single size most listings advertise. A king size mattress pad is the thin, cheap end of the same shelf, and a king size mattress topper protector still belongs on top of whichever you choose.

Emma Original Pro Topper

Best overall

Emma Original Pro Topper

The Emma Original Pro Topper is the king size topper we would put on a firm 150x200 mattress first, because its 9cm of graphite-infused ThermoSync foam over springy HRX foam adds real depth without the slow sink of memory foam. In our own test it slept noticeably less warm than classic memory foam, although the cooling is moderate rather than dramatic. The king costs £409, and above about 100kg the foam starts to feel soft.

Pros
  • 9cm deep by Emma's specification
  • Tested by us, cooler than memory foam
  • Non-slip base grips a 150cm-wide mattress
  • Cover washes at 40°C
Cons
  • Second-highest king price in this ranking
  • A little soft above about 100kg
  • Emma's pages quote two trial lengths

TEMPUR ONE Topper

The TEMPUR ONE Topper outscores six of the seven toppers above it, yet it ranks eighth because the king costs £649, the most in this ranking, for 5cm of TEMPUR Adapt memory foam. What that buys is dense, slow pressure relief and a 10-year guarantee. Foam this dense can hold heat for warm sleepers.

  • 30-night home trial
Cons

Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper

Soak&Sleep's Goose Down Dual Chamber is the soft, hotel-style choice, with a top chamber of 70% goose down over a goose feather chamber in a 233 thread count cotton casing, 7cm deep. The king is £215. It adds softness rather than support, so it suits a king mattress that is sound but too firm.

Pros
  • 70% goose down top chamber
  • Feather base stops it bottoming out
  • Cotton percale casing
  • Five-year guarantee
Cons
  • Needs professional cleaning

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“On a king, choose the topper for the warmer or heavier of the two of you, and read the trial terms before the price, because a topper that has been slept on rarely goes back.”

A UK king topper measures 150x200cm

A king size mattress topper for a British bed should measure 150x200cm, the king size given in the bed size guide from Bed Advice UK. A continental king is 160x200cm, and some shops, Panda among them, sell both, so pick the option labelled UK King. Bed Advice UK points out that a 135cm double leaves each person 67.5cm and warns that “with so little room to move, you’re more likely to disturb your partner every time you change position, resulting in a poor night’s sleep.” A king gives each of you 75cm. A 180cm bed needs a super king topper instead, and a 135cm bed a double topper.

Two sleepers change what matters

On a shared bed one topper serves two bodies and often two temperature preferences, and it decides how much of a partner’s turning reaches you. Slow memory foam, as in the TEMPUR ONE and the Panda Bamboo, tends to mute a partner’s turning, while the springs in the Simba Hybrid Essential and the Dormeo Octasmart Plus feel livelier.

If you weigh very differently, choose for the heavier sleeper, who compresses the topper further. The best evidence on firmness points to the middle. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs and colleagues, 2003), people given medium-firm mattresses had better outcomes for pain in bed after 90 days than those on firm ones (odds ratio 2.36). A 5 to 9cm topper is a cheaper way to move a firm king mattress towards that medium-firm feel.

Heat is the third question. A review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) reports that in real-life conditions with bedding, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces deep and REM sleep. Dense memory foam holds body heat, so if either of you wakes up warm, favour the John Lewis British wool, the Emma Original Pro graphite foam or the Dunelm ventilated gel foam over dense memory foam.

Regular prices at each merchant’s UK shop, checked on 28 September 2026. At those prices the step from double to king ranges from £5 on the Silentnight to £100 on the TEMPUR ONE. *Emma’s buy box lists 100 nights and up to 10 years, while the FAQ on the same product pages says 30 nights and 2 years. The rest of Panda’s range is compared in our best Panda mattress toppers.

Depth, filling and grip

The Bed Advice UK topper guide suggests a topper at least 5cm deep, because anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference, and recommends non-slip backing or elastic corner straps so it does not shift on a mattress this wide. Feather and down, as in the Soak&Sleep, adds softness rather than support. Quilted fibre such as the Silentnight Deep Sleep Ultimate 500 is closest to what many shops call a king size mattress pad. The Panda names OEKO-TEX Standard 100, whose label means every component has been tested against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances. For single to super king sizes in one list, see our best mattress toppers.

Topper, protector or both

A topper does not replace a mattress protector, and it needs protecting itself. A king size protector goes on top of the topper, and Bed Advice UK suggests owning two so one can be washed while the other is on the bed. A 9cm topper on a 25cm mattress needs a protector and fitted sheet that fit 34cm. Our best mattress protectors ranking compares waterproof and cotton options.

Check the trial before the price

Once a topper has been slept on, most sellers will take it back only if it is faulty or covered by a sleep trial, so the trial is your way out if the king feels wrong. Simba and Dormeo give 200 nights, Emma lists 100, Panda and TEMPUR 30, and Dunelm, John Lewis, Soak&Sleep and Silentnight offer none on these toppers. A trial will not save a worn mattress either. Bed Advice UK notes that a topper quickly moulds to the dips of a sagging mattress, so that bed needs replacing rather than topping.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked ten toppers that each merchant sells in the UK king size, 150x200cm, and that were in stock in that size at the brand’s or retailer’s own UK shop when we checked on 28 September 2026; toppers whose king was sold out that day, such as the REM-Fit Halo, were left out. Specifications come from the merchants’ product pages. We tested the Emma Original Pro Topper ourselves, and the other nine are scored on verified specifications and king prices.

Four points decide the rank on a king:

  • Depth, against the 5cm minimum suggested by Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site.
  • Fit for two sleepers, meaning movement, firmness and heat.
  • Grip on a mattress 150cm wide, from corner straps or a non-slip base.
  • Value, the king price set against the sleep trial, the returns terms and the guarantee.

The overall score out of 10 starts from comfort 30%, support 25%, temperature 15% and value 30%, and then reflects the brand’s standing in the UK market; the Emma Original Pro keeps the score from our own test. The order follows the overall score with one exception. The TEMPUR ONE Topper outscores six of the seven toppers above it but ranks eighth, because its king costs £649 against £409 for the dearest topper ranked above it. All prices are regular king prices checked on 28 September 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a king size mattress topper in the UK?

A UK king size mattress topper measures 150x200cm, the king size listed by Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation's consumer site. A continental king is 160x200cm, so on shops that sell both, such as Panda, choose the option labelled UK King.

Will a king size topper fit a super king bed?

No, a king topper is 30cm too narrow for a super king, which measures 180x200cm in the Bed Advice UK size guide. Buy the topper in the same size as the mattress, because a narrower one leaves a step along the edge.

How thick should a king size mattress topper be?

Aim for at least 5cm, the minimum Bed Advice UK suggests for a noticeable change in feel. The foam toppers in this ranking run from 5cm on the Panda Bamboo and TEMPUR ONE to 9cm on the Emma Original Pro Topper, or 10cm if you choose the deeper version of the Dunelm Gel Fusion.

Do I need a mattress protector over a king size topper?

Yes. A topper changes how the bed feels but does nothing to keep itself clean, and some here, such as the John Lewis wool, can only be sponged or dry cleaned. Put a king size protector over the topper, and see our best mattress protectors for waterproof and cotton options.

Is a king size mattress pad the same as a topper?

Not quite. A mattress pad is usually a thin quilted layer that adds a little softness, while a topper is deeper and changes the feel more. The 5cm quilted fibre Silentnight Deep Sleep Ultimate 500, at £45 in king, is the closest thing to a pad in this ranking.

Can I return a king size mattress topper if it does not suit us?

Only within a sleep trial, or if it is unused or faulty. The Simba Hybrid Essential and the Dormeo Octasmart Plus come with 200-night trials, while Dunelm, John Lewis, Soak&Sleep and Silentnight offer none on the toppers ranked here.

Will a topper fix a sagging king size mattress?

No. Bed Advice UK says a topper will quickly mould to the same dips, so a sagging king needs a new mattress rather than a topper.

How much does a good king size mattress topper cost?

In this ranking the king prices run from £45 for the Silentnight fibre topper to £649 for the TEMPUR ONE, at regular prices checked on 28 September 2026. Our top pick, the Emma Original Pro Topper, costs £409 in king.
