Best foam mattresses

The best foam mattress is an all-foam build that stays cool enough for you, sits close to medium-firm and comes with a trial long enough to judge a material that can take weeks to get used to. We compare memory foam and other all-foam mattresses in UK sizes, from a single or small double to a super king, on heat, motion isolation for couples, foam depth, certification and the price of each size.

Best foam mattresses: top pick in detail

Ergoflex 5G
Ergoflex 5GErgoflex 5GErgoflex 5G
Best overall

Ergoflex 5G

The Ergoflex 5G is the foam mattress we would pick for most UK buyers, at £528 in a double. Its 23cm build puts 9cm of memory foam, the thickest layer any maker in this ranking declares, over a 5cm airflow layer that tackles the commonest complaint about foam, and Ergoflex names both CertiPUR and OEKO-TEX 100. The catch is a 30-night home trial, the shortest in this ranking.

Pros
  • 9cm memory foam over a 5cm airflow layer
  • CertiPUR and OEKO-TEX 100 named by the maker
  • Removable, washable TENCEL cover
Cons
  • 30-night trial, the shortest here
  • No trial in Northern Ireland, northern Scotland or the islands
  • No small double

Best value

Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress

Value decides this one. A double Nectar Classic costs £449 and comes with a 365-night trial, the longest of the ten, on a 25cm build of three CertiPUR-certified foam layers over a seven-zone base. If you run hot, look at the Ergoflex 5G, which adds an airflow layer under its memory foam.

Pros
  • 365-night trial, the longest here
  • Sold in all five UK sizes
  • Three CertiPUR-certified foam layers
  • Made in Derbyshire, according to Nectar
Cons
  • Memory foam sits under a support foam, less hug
  • 6.5/10 firmness may feel firm to light side sleepers

TEMPUR PRO SmartCool

If budget is secondary, the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool is the reference visco-elastic mattress, with 3cm of TEMPUR Advanced Material and 5cm of Dynamic Support foam over a 13cm DuraBase core. It has the highest comfort and support scores of the ten. It still ranks third because a double lists at £2,299, about five times the Nectar Classic, and the trial is 100 nights with a 60-night minimum. A zip-off cover washable at 40°C and a choice of four feels go some way to justify the outlay.

Best for couples

Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress

Couples who want more depth should look at the Nectar Premier, 28cm of four CertiPUR foam layers on a 12-zone honeycomb base, for £649 in a double. Nectar says its cover carries 40% more cooling fibres than the Classic's, though that is Nectar's claim rather than a measured result.

Pros
  • 12-zone honeycomb support base
  • Four CertiPUR foam layers, 28cm deep
  • 365-night trial
Cons
  • No small double
  • Dearer than the Nectar Classic in every size

Emma Original Classic
Emma Original ClassicEmma Original ClassicEmma Original Classic
Best for side sleepers

Emma Original Classic

For side sleepers who want a softer, hugging foam feel, the Emma Original Classic is the pick. Emma publishes no firmness grade, and we place it at medium where every other mattress here is sold or placed at medium-firm, with Airgocell and MemoryAdapt foam over a SupportBase cut away at shoulder and hip. A double costs £669, more than the Nectar Classic or the Ergoflex 5G, which is why a 200-night trial does not lift it higher.

Pros
  • Softest feel in this ranking, by our estimate
  • Base foam cut away at shoulder and hip
  • Seven sizes, including 140x200 and 160x200
  • 200-night trial
Cons
  • No firmness grade published by Emma
  • No foam certification named
  • Dearer than the Nectar Classic in every shared size

Pros
  • 3cm TEMPUR Adapt comfort layer
  • Roughly half the PRO's price in a double
  • Next working day delivery

GhostBed Classic Foam

Made in the UK according to GhostBed, the Classic Foam is a 28cm mattress with Ghost Bounce comfort foam over ProCore zoned support foam, at £549 for a double. Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“A foam mattress is only as cool as its cover and its room, so treat a cooling claim as the maker's promise rather than a measured result. After that, take the longest trial you can get, because foam takes weeks to judge.”

What counts as a foam mattress

Every mattress in this ranking is all-foam, with no springs anywhere in the build. Within that, three kinds of foam do different jobs. Visco-elastic memory foam softens with body heat and moulds slowly, as in the 9cm layer of the Ergoflex 5G or TEMPUR’s own material. Polyurethane support foam forms the base of all ten mattresses and decides how well they resist sagging. Open-cell or point-elastic comfort foams, such as Emma’s Airgocell and GhostBed’s Ghost Bounce, recover faster and feel less like sinking in. If you want the slow hug of memory foam in particular, our memory foam mattress ranking narrows the field, and if you would rather have foam over springs, the hybrids are in our hybrid mattress ranking.

The table sets the ten side by side on the specifications that matter for foam. Depth, layers, firmness, trial and certification come from each maker’s UK product page.

Heat is the complaint to solve first

Warmth is where foam mattresses most often disappoint, because a dense layer that moulds to you also keeps your heat close. The makers answer it in different ways. The Ergoflex 5G puts a 5cm airflow layer under its memory foam, the Soak&Sleep uses gel-infused quilting, TEMPUR fits a SmartCool cover to the PRO, and Nectar says the Premier’s cover carries 40% more cooling fibres than the Classic’s. Treat all of them as the makers’ claims rather than measured results. The room matters as much as the mattress, and The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom temperature at around 16 to 18°C, warning that anything over 24°C is likely to cause restlessness.

Sharing a bed

Motion isolation is memory foam’s strongest suit: with no springs to carry movement across the bed, an all-foam mattress suits a light sleeper who shares with a fidget. The trade-off is that the moulding can make it harder to turn over or get out of bed than on a pocket-sprung mattress. Heavier couples should check the weight guidance where a maker publishes one. Ergoflex, for example, recommends the 5G for people up to 18 stone (about 114kg) each, or 30 stone combined, on its FAQ page.

Firmness and back pain

Medium-firm has the better evidence behind it. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic non-specific low back pain, Kovacs and colleagues (The Lancet, 2003) found that people on a medium-firm mattress (5.6 on the H(s) scale) had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one (2.3), for pain in bed and for disability. Nine of the ten mattresses here are sold or placed at medium-firm. The Emma Original Classic is the softer exception and suits lighter side sleepers better than heavy back sleepers. If you still want the firmer end, our firm mattress ranking covers it.

Lifespan, certification and the trial

The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, around 20,000 hours of use, and its 2019 consumer research found people replaced their bed every 6.9 years on average. For the foam itself, the CertiPUR label means it is made without heavy metals such as mercury, lead or cadmium, without phthalate plasticisers and with low VOC emissions; the label lasts three years, with control tests every year. Four of the ten name CertiPUR on their product pages: the Ergoflex 5G, both Nectars and the Soak&Sleep. Trials run from 30 nights (Ergoflex) to 365 (Nectar, and IKEA as an exchange). If you have never slept on memory foam, a longer trial gives you more time to judge it, and Ergoflex advises allowing up to 21 nights to get used to the 5G, which leaves nine nights of its trial to decide.

Prices by UK size

The rank cards show each mattress at its lowest price, usually a single. The table lists every UK size each one is sold in, from our product records checked on 28 September 2026, and sales move these figures often. Only four of the ten come as a small double (120x190). For a 135x190 across all constructions, sprung and hybrid included, see our double mattress ranking.

Methodology

How we rate

This ranking covers all-foam mattresses only. Every pick is built from foam layers with no springs, so foam-topped hybrids sit in our main mattress ranking instead. Each mattress carries the same five scores out of 100, and the overall figure weights comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%, plus a brand adjustment of a few points for UK market presence.

Three things move a foam mattress up or down. Heat comes first: we weigh cooling covers, gel and airflow layers. Next is the depth and make-up of the support foam, which decides how well the mattress resists sagging. Last is firmness close to medium-firm, the grade that beat a firm mattress in a 2003 Lancet trial which rated firmness on the European Committee for Standardisation’s H(s) scale. Foam certification counts in the value score, with the CertiPUR standard as the benchmark.

Specifications, UK sizes, trial terms and prices come from each manufacturer’s UK product page and were checked on 28 September 2026. Where the ranking policy places a lower-scored mattress above a higher one, the rank card gives the reason. Card prices update from our product records, and sale prices change weekly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best foam mattress in the UK?

The Ergoflex 5G is our top foam mattress, at £528 for a double. It puts 9cm of memory foam over a 5cm airflow layer, with CertiPUR and OEKO-TEX 100 named by the maker. If a 30-night trial is too short for you, the Nectar Classic comes with 365 nights, and our mattress in a box ranking compares trial terms across boxed foam and hybrid models.

Is a foam mattress the same as a memory foam mattress?

Not always, because memory foam is only one kind of foam. Memory foam is visco-elastic and softens with body heat, while mattresses such as the Emma Original Classic combine it with faster-recovering open-cell foam, and every all-foam mattress rests on a firmer polyurethane support base, while latex foam made from rubber tree sap has its own latex mattress ranking.

Do memory foam mattresses make you hot?

They can, because memory foam softens with body heat and a dense layer keeps that warmth close to you. The makers here answer it in different ways, with an airflow layer on the Ergoflex 5G, gel-infused quilting on the Soak&Sleep and a SmartCool cover on the TEMPUR PRO, and a bedroom at around 16 to 18°C, the range The Sleep Charity recommends, helps as much as any of them.

What is the best small double memory foam mattress?

The Nectar Classic is the best-value small double here, at £449 in 120x190 with a 365-night trial. Only three other picks come as a small double: the Emma Original Classic, the Eve Original and the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool.

How much does a good double memory foam mattress cost?

In this ranking a double (135x190) runs from £299 for the IKEA Åkrehamn to £2,299 for the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool, with the Nectar Classic at £449 and the Ergoflex 5G at £528 in between.

How long does a foam mattress last?

The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, roughly 20,000 hours of use, and its 2019 consumer research found people replaced their bed every 6.9 years on average. A foam mattress resists sagging only as well as its support foam, so the depth and make-up of that base matter more than the comfort layer on top.

Should I buy a foam mattress topper instead of a new mattress?

A topper changes the feel of a sound mattress but cannot fix one that sags. If yours is still sound and simply too firm, a foam topper adds a softer layer for far less than a new mattress. Our mattress topper ranking compares the options.

What is the best single foam mattress?

For a 90x190 single, the Nectar Classic costs £199 with a 365-night trial, and the IKEA Åkrehamn costs £199, although its 365 nights are an exchange rather than a refund. The Ergoflex 5G single costs £369 if you want the thickest memory foam layer declared in this ranking. Our single mattress ranking adds sprung and hybrid singles.
