Comparison

Best latex mattress toppers

The best latex mattress topper for most UK beds is a 5 to 7cm layer of certified natural latex on a mattress that is still flat, chosen by feel: Dunlop for a denser, firmer surface, Talalay for a softer, springier one. Natural, blended and synthetic rubber can look identical in a listing, so this comparison checks what each maker proves about its latex, then the depth, stated firmness, wool wrapping, fire standard, trial, guarantee and the price in each UK size.

Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper
Best overall

Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper

The Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper is the latex topper we would put on most UK beds, 6cm of 100% natural Dunlop latex at 65kg/m³ with seven comfort zones, a medium feel and latex certified by eco-INSTITUT, which Latex Sense says tested it for fillers and synthetic rubber. A single costs £250 and a double £345, with a 30-night trial, a 10-year guarantee and the best value score in this comparison. There is no wool over the latex and the Tencel and cotton cover is not washable, so budget for a mattress protector.

  • eco-INSTITUT latex, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 cover
  • 30-night trial, 10-year guarantee

Naturalmat Bovey Topper

The Naturalmat Bovey Topper is the firmest topper Naturalmat makes, a 6cm natural latex core wrapped in organic wool that Naturalmat describes as firm enough to give extra support where you need it. It meets BS 7177 at medium hazard without chemical fire retardants and costs £900 in a 137x190 double, about £140 more than the Terrific. It ties on score with the Woolroom Cheviot and the Talatex and follows both because it is the only one of the three without a sleep trial.

Pros

  • Natural latex wrapped in organic wool
  • BS 7177 medium hazard, no chemical retardants
  • Nine UK sizes plus made-to-measure

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Decide how firm you want the bed to feel before you pick a brand, because a soft Talalay layer and a firm Dunlop layer of the same depth feel like different products. After that, look for a certificate that names the latex as natural rather than trusting the word in the product title.”

Natural, synthetic or blended latex

The word latex on a topper listing does not tell you what the core is made of, because natural, blended and synthetic rubber can look identical in a listing. A certificate is how you tell them apart. Latex Sense has its latex certified by eco-INSTITUT, which it says tests for fillers, synthetic rubber and emissions, and its covers carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100, whose label means every thread, button and accessory has been tested against over 1,000 harmful substances. The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), developed by Control Union, goes further and requires the rubber to come from certified organic plantations; the Latex Sense Organic is the only GOLS topper here. Naturalmat, Woolroom and Hypnos describe their latex as natural but name no latex certificate on their product pages, and Talatex shows a strip of logos, GOLS and eco-INSTITUT among them, without saying which one covers its topper.

Dunlop or Talalay, and how firm

Talatex, which makes its toppers only from Dunlop latex, credits Dunlop with a “denser structure” and Talalay with a “softer, more buoyant texture”. The published densities follow that pattern, from 60kg/m³ for the soft Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay to 85kg/m³ for the firm Latex Sense Firmsense, and Land of Beds grades the Talalay-filled Hypnos as soft. Side sleepers need the shoulder and hip to sink, which suits a soft Talalay layer, while back and front sleepers usually do better on a medium or firm Dunlop layer. Firmer is not automatically better for a bad back. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, Kovacs and colleagues reported in The Lancet in 2003 that a medium-firm mattress did better than a firm one for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36), so a firm topper on an already firm mattress is rarely the fix. Non-latex options are in our firm mattress toppers comparison.

Pressure relief is the main argument for latex. In a 2017 study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, Low and colleagues had 20 young adults lie on a latex mattress and on a high-density polyurethane foam mattress in three postures, and peak pressure was between 26.1% and 35.1% lower on the latex, with the largest drop at the side torso. The study used whole mattresses, six minutes per posture and a latex mattress supplied by its maker, so treat it as an indication for toppers rather than proof.

Depth, weight and wool

Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site, recommends a topper at least 5cm deep, since anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference, and it warns that a topper laid over deep dips will mould to those same dips. Latex is heavy, and Land of Beds lists the 7cm Hypnos at 11kg in a double and 16kg in a super king. Five toppers hold the latex between layers of wool (the three Naturalmats, the Hypnos and the Woolroom), while the Latex Sense and Talatex toppers put you closer to the latex under a thinner cover. Plan on a mattress protector whichever you choose. Latex Sense says its covers are not washable and advises a protector at all times, Woolroom says the Cheviot is spot clean only, and Talatex warns that its latex core must never be machine washed. For wool without latex see our wool mattress toppers, for the slow sink of foam our memory foam toppers, and for a whole latex bed our latex mattresses.

Allergy, fire safety and returns

Natural latex is a known allergen. Allergy UK lists latex bed sheets and pillows among likely sources and advises: “Check before buying any article which could be rubber and whether it contains natural rubber latex. This is particularly important for articles which will be in contact with your body.” A wool or cotton cover sits over the latex without removing it, so a diagnosed latex allergy rules out every topper on this page. Fire rules are less clear for toppers. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 cover “mattresses (of any size)” but not bedding, so the makers state their own standard. Naturalmat gives BS 7177 at medium hazard for all three of its toppers, and Latex Sense gives BS 7177 and BS 5852, using graphite in the latex in place of chemical sprays. A topper you have slept on usually goes back only under a sleep trial, so the 30-night trials from Latex Sense and Woolroom and the 30-day trial from Talatex carry real weight, while Naturalmat and Land of Beds list no trial on these toppers. Other sizes are in our double and king size topper comparisons, and every fill in the mattress topper comparison.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked latex mattress toppers on how well they change the feel of a mattress that is still flat and sound, and on how much proof each maker gives that its latex is natural. Every pick is sold in standard UK sizes by its maker or a UK stockist. We read prices, sizes and stock on each seller’s page on 28 September 2026, when every size was in stock except the Latex Sense Organic in 140x200. Prices are regular prices.

What the score weighs

Each topper carries our overall score out of 10, built from comfort (30%), support (25%), temperature (15%) and value (30%). For latex, five checks feed those scores.

  • The latex itself, natural or synthetic, Dunlop or Talalay, with any density or ILD figure the maker publishes, and whether a named certificate backs the word natural.
  • The feel the maker or stockist states, from soft to firm.
  • Depth, against the 5cm minimum recommended by Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site.
  • What surrounds the latex (wool, cashmere or a thin cover) and the fire standard the maker states.
  • The sleep trial, the guarantee and the price in each UK size.

The order follows the overall score. Where two toppers tie, the one with a sleep trial goes first, then the one with the longer guarantee, because a topper you have slept on usually goes back only under a sleep trial. That places the Latex Sense Organic above the Hypnos, the Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay above the Naturalmat Terrific, the Woolroom Cheviot above the Talatex, and both of those above the Naturalmat Bovey, which has no trial. A wool wrapping counts through the comfort and temperature scores rather than as a bonus of its own.

The Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper is our best latex mattress topper for most UK beds, 6cm of eco-INSTITUT certified natural Dunlop latex with a medium feel, a 30-night trial and a 10-year guarantee, from £250 for a single. If you want the latex wrapped in cashmere and wool and price matters less, the Naturalmat Tremendous Topper has the highest comfort score here, at £720 in the same size.

Is a latex mattress topper better than memory foam?

A latex topper is the better choice if you want a springier surface that pushes back, and memory foam if you want to sink in slowly. In a 2017 study Low and colleagues measured peak pressure 26.1% to 35.1% lower on a latex mattress than on high-density polyurethane foam. Latex usually costs more, as our memory foam topper comparison shows.

What is the difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex toppers?

Dunlop latex toppers are usually denser and firmer, and Talalay toppers softer and springier, a difference Talatex describes as Talalay's "softer, more buoyant texture". On this page the Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay is 60kg/m³ and rated soft, while the Latex Sense Dunlop toppers are 65kg/m³ for medium and 85kg/m³ for firm. The Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay and the Hypnos Origins Supreme are the two Talalay toppers in this comparison.

What is the best firm latex mattress topper?

The Latex Sense Firmsense Dunlop Latex Topper is the firmest latex topper in this comparison, 6cm of 100% natural Dunlop latex at 85kg/m³ that Latex Sense aims at back and front sleepers. A single costs £285 and a double £380, with a 30-night trial and a 10-year guarantee. If you want a firm latex layer wrapped in organic wool instead, the Naturalmat Bovey Topper is the firmest Naturalmat makes, at £900 in a 137x190 double with no sleep trial.

How can I tell if a latex topper is natural latex?

Look for a named certificate for the latex itself rather than the word natural, because natural, blended and synthetic rubber can look identical in a listing. On this page Latex Sense names eco-INSTITUT, which it says checks for fillers and synthetic rubber, and its Organic topper carries the GOLS organic latex standard run by Control Union. Naturalmat, Woolroom and Hypnos name no latex certificate on their product pages, and Talatex shows a row of certification logos without saying which one covers its topper.

Can I use a latex mattress topper if I have a latex allergy?

A latex mattress topper is best avoided if you have a diagnosed natural rubber latex allergy, because Allergy UK says avoidance is the key to preventing reactions once the allergy is confirmed, and it lists latex bed sheets and pillows among products likely to contain latex. A wool or cotton cover, as on the Naturalmat, Woolroom and Hypnos toppers, sits over the latex without removing it.

How thick should a latex mattress topper be?

A latex mattress topper should be at least 5cm thick, the minimum Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation's consumer site, recommends because thinner toppers are unlikely to make a noticeable difference. Most latex toppers here are 6 to 7cm, the Talatex comes in 5cm or 7.5cm and the double-sided Woolroom Cheviot is 11cm.

How long does a latex mattress topper last?

The guarantee is the clearest guide to how long a latex topper should last. In this comparison it runs from 1 year on the Talatex Premium and 2 years on the Naturalmat toppers to 10 years on every Latex Sense topper and 15 years on the Woolroom Cheviot. A mattress protector helps it get there, since Latex Sense covers are not washable and Talatex warns that its latex core must never be machine washed.
