Its retail beds and mattresses carry a 10-year guarantee.

Best Hypnos mattresses: UK range reviewed and compared

Hypnos is a family-run British bedmaker that has handmade pocket sprung mattresses in Buckinghamshire since 1904. It has held a Royal Warrant since 1929, first granted by George V and now held from King Charles III. The Hypnos company page says the fifth generation of the Keen family runs the business day to day, and that Hypnos is the only manufacturer to have won the National Bed Federation’s Bed Manufacturer of the Year award three times, in 2011/12, 2014/15 and 2017/18. Hypnos is listed on the National Bed Federation’s member directory.

The government’s King’s Awards blog covered its Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development in 2020, the company’s second after one for International Trade in 2017, and describes its beds as 100% foam free and 100% recyclable, filled with traceable British wool from Red Tractor assured farms.

Guarantee and trials

The Hypnos FAQ states that a Hypnos bed comes with a 10-year guarantee, and warns that a worn or unsuitable base can invalidate it. Claims go through the retailer. There is no brand-wide home trial, so whether you can return a mattress you have slept on depends entirely on the shop you buy from.

Who Hypnos suits

Hypnos suits buyers who want a foam-free, wool-filled pocket sprung mattress made in Britain and who are happy to try it in a showroom first. It is expensive: even the Cotton Origins 6, the cheapest model we list, costs £999 in a double, and six of the eight models cost more than £1,500 in a double at the stockists we checked. The Wool Origins 6 tops our best Hypnos mattresses ranking, and the Orthos Support 7 appears in our best firm mattresses, best king size mattresses and best orthopaedic mattresses.
