Abaca is a Welsh maker of organic mattresses, beds and bedding that handmakes its mattresses to order in Carmarthenshire and sells them direct. Founder Rhiannon Rowley worked on a pilot project with the Soil Association to develop its organic textile standards, and Abaca launched in 2004, according to the Abaca history page. Companies House lists Abaca Ltd, trading under that name since August 2004, with a registered office at Ty Croes Business Park near Ammanford and “manufacture of mattresses” as its business activity.

The mattress range and its guarantees

Abaca makes ten adult mattress models across three constructions: natural latex, pocket springs with organic wool, and fibre-only wool mattresses. Each carries its own guarantee, set out on the Abaca guarantee page.

Returns and cancellations

Abaca offers no sleep trial. Its guarantee terms give you 14 working days from receipt to return a mattress, ask that the sealed bag stays unopened, put the return carriage on the buyer, and allow Abaca to refuse bespoke sizes or firmness changes. A deposit on a cancelled order is refunded in full only within 14 days, then on a falling scale to nothing after 35 days.

Who Abaca is for

Abaca suits buyers who want certified organic materials, a choice of spring, latex or fibre builds, and a guarantee of up to 15 years from a Welsh workshop. It suits you less well if you need a mattress within days, want to sleep on it before committing, or have a budget below the Rhossili’s £2,580 for a double.
