Comparison

Best soft mattress toppers

A soft mattress topper is the cheapest way to make a bed that feels too hard more comfortable, as long as the mattress underneath is still flat and supportive. Which one suits you depends on the feel you are after, since memory foam lets your shoulders and hips sink in, fibre and down give a plump, cloud-like surface, and latex softens while springing back. We compare soft toppers sold in UK sizes by filling, depth, heat, washing and the price of a double, with what side sleepers and people with back pain should look for.

Starlight Beds 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper

The Starlight Beds 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper is the one to buy if your mattress is sound but feels hard. It puts 7.5cm of memory foam under you, half as much again as the usual 5cm topper, so your shoulder and hip sink in properly before they meet the mattress, which is the relief a side sleeper on a firm bed is missing.

A double costs £94.99, less than several 5cm toppers in our memory foam topper comparison, and Starlight makes it in the UK. The zip cover is machine washable. Buy it for the most softness for your money, unless you sleep hot or on your front.

Pros
  • 7.5cm memory foam, Starlight's deepest
  • Eases shoulders and hips on a hard bed
  • Zip cover is machine washable
  • Made in the UK, seven sizes
Cons
  • No sleep trial
  • Holds more heat than fibre or latex
  • Lets front sleepers' hips sink too far

John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch Washable Dual Layer Mattress Topper

Two layers do the work in this John Lewis topper. The soft-touch upper layer unzips and can be washed on its own, while the base layer stays on the bed and gives the softness something steadier to rest on, so the 5cm surface feels plump without the slow sink of foam.

At £105 for a double, with a two-year John Lewis guarantee, it suits anyone who would rather not sleep on feathers. Choose it if you want a softer bed you can keep fresh without wrestling a whole topper into the drum.

Pros
  • Upper layer unzips for the washing machine
  • Base layer keeps the softness even
  • Feather-free polyester filling
  • Fits mattresses up to 32cm deep
Cons
  • Less contouring than foam or latex

Best for an adjustable feel

Emma Original Topper

If you are not sure how soft you want your bed, the Emma Original Topper lets you change your mind. One side is Emma's airy Airgocell foam and the other its firmer HRX foam, so a side sleeper can start soft side up and flip the 6cm topper over if their back asks for more support.

Emma puts 2.5cm of Airgocell on the soft face, so it softens gently. For more depth, look at the 9cm Original Pro in our Emma topper comparison.

At £219 for a double, buy it if you want one topper that can be soft now and firmer later.

John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper
Best for a hotel-bed feel

John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper

Down gives a duvet-like softness that no foam or fibre quite copies, and this John Lewis topper is generous with it. The top layer is 95% Muscovy duck down, over a base of duck feather that stops you sinking straight through to the mattress, and the 320 thread count cotton cover lets the whole thing breathe.

It costs more than most picks here at £240 for a double, and it can only be spot cleaned. If you want the plump, enveloping feel of a good hotel bed and do not overheat easily, this is the one.

Pros
  • 95% Muscovy duck down top layer
  • Feather base stops you bottoming out
  • 320 thread count cotton cover
  • Breathes better than polyester fibre
Cons
  • Spot clean only, no machine wash
  • Four sizes, no small double

Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay Latex Topper
Best for hot sleepers

Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay Latex Topper

Talalay latex is the soft topper for people who overheat on memory foam. The Latex Sense Ultimate is 6cm of natural Talalay at 60kg/m³ in the maker's soft grade, and it cushions the shoulder and hip yet springs back as you turn, so you never feel stuck in a hollow. Air moves through latex more freely than through memory foam, and the cover blends Tencel with cotton.

It is the dearest pick on this page at £640 for a double, backed by a 10-year guarantee and a 30-night trial. For side and back sleepers who run hot and want a topper that lasts, it earns the price.

Pros
  • 6cm natural Talalay latex, soft grade
  • Springy, so turning over is easy
  • Sleeps cooler than memory foam
  • 10-year guarantee, 30-night trial
Cons
  • Several times the price of fibre
  • Cover is not washable

Best budget pick

Silentnight Anti-Allergy Ultimate 1000 Mattress Topper

For £39.99 in a double, Silentnight's Anti-Allergy Ultimate 1000 puts 10cm of hollowfibre on your bed, the cheapest way on this list to make a hard mattress feel soft. Internal walls keep the filling spread across the quilted squares, and the whole topper can go through a 40°C wash.

The fibre is approved by the British Allergy Foundation, which helps if dust sets off your nose at night. Heavier sleepers will press through fibre sooner than through foam. For a guest room, a student bed or a first try at a softer mattress, it is hard to beat.

Pros
  • 10cm of hollowfibre for the least money
  • Whole topper washes at 40°C
  • Anti-allergy fibre
  • Made in the UK
Cons
  • Double, king and super king only

DUSK Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper

Best-value goose down

DUSK Supreme Goose Down Mattress Topper

DUSK's Supreme Goose Down topper puts real goose down on your bed for £100 in a double, and the king is cheaper still at £75. The top tier is 70% goose down over a feather base, in a cotton percale casing with baffle walls that stop the down drifting to the edges.

DUSK recommends professional laundering only, and the single was out of stock when we checked in October 2026. Deeper down-and-feather models are in our feather topper comparison. Buy it if you want genuine down softness on a modest budget and already keep the bed under a washable protector.

Pros
  • 70% goose down top tier
  • Baffle walls keep the down even
  • RDS-certified feather and down
  • King costs less than the double
Cons
  • Professional laundering only

Best cotton-covered fibre topper

Littens 4 Inch Ultimate Premium Cotton Soft As Down Mattress Topper

Littens wraps its 4 Inch Ultimate topper in a 280 thread count pure cotton casing, which breathes better and feels crisper against a sheet than the polyester covers on most fibre toppers. Inside, 10cm of fine soft-as-down microfibre sits between baffle walls, so the topper is deep and evenly soft with no feathers in it.

Littens also sells it in European sizes such as 140x200 and 160x200, handy if your bed came from abroad. It accepts no returns once the seal is broken, so check the size first. A UK double is £95.95, a fair price for a warm sleeper who wants fibre with a natural cover.

Pros
  • 280 thread count pure cotton casing
  • 10cm microfibre, no feathers
  • UK and European sizes
  • Baffle walls hold the loft

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Choose memory foam or latex if your shoulders and hips ache on a hard mattress, and fibre or down if you simply want a plumper, cosier surface to sleep on.”

Softness is not a single feel, and the right soft topper depends on why your bed feels wrong. If you are not sure softness is the problem at all, our full mattress topper ranking also covers supportive, cooling and wool toppers, and our Duvalay comparison deals with caravan and campervan beds.

What “soft” means on a topper

A topper changes the top few centimetres of your bed, and the filling decides how. Memory foam and latex soften by giving way under pressure, so your shoulder and hip sink while the rest of you stays level. Fibre and down soften through loft, which makes the whole surface plump and cushioned but compresses most where you lie heaviest.

The four soft fillings compared
Filling How it feels Heat Washing at home What to look for
Memory foam Slow, body-hugging sink that eases shoulders and hips Warmest, holds body heat Usually the cover only 5 to 7.5cm; the deeper end for a very hard mattress
Latex Soft but springy, easy to turn over on Cooler than memory foam Rarely, check the cover A soft grade; Talalay is usually the softer type
Fibre and microfibre Plump and cloud-like, little hug Moderate, cooler in a cotton casing Many wash whole at 40°C 7 to 10cm with box stitching or baffle walls
Feather and down Deep, duvet-like give Breathable but cosy Spot clean or professional laundering The down share on the label, such as 70% down

Side sleepers: let the shoulder sink

Side sleeping is the most common position. In a 2017 study of 664 Danish adults who wore motion sensors in bed, published in Nature and Science of Sleep, people spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side, and the share rose with age and body weight. On a hard mattress that position loads the shoulder and hip, which is where the ache and the numb arm come from. A side sleeper gets most from a layer that contours, such as 7.5cm of memory foam or 6cm of soft latex, because fibre compresses most exactly where the shoulder presses.

Back pain: aim for medium

If your back hurts, aim to bring a hard bed towards medium. In a randomised trial published in The Lancet in 2003, 313 adults with chronic low back pain did better after 90 days on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones, with less pain in bed and on getting up. Some give helps, then, but a deep, very soft layer that lets your hips drop below your shoulders can undo the benefit. A 5 to 6cm layer of latex or medium-soft foam is the safer choice, and a topper with a firmer second side lets you change course without buying again. Front sleepers face the same risk and should stay at the thinner end.

Heat: what the filling does at night

Memory foam and down both hold warmth close to the body, while latex and fibre in a cotton casing let more of it escape. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom at around 16-18°C and says temperatures over 24°C are likely to cause restlessness, so if your room already runs warm in summer, a foam topper adds to the problem. Hot sleepers who want softness should look at latex first, and our latex topper comparison covers the firmer Dunlop types as well. For heat above all else, see our cooling topper picks.

How deep to go, and when a topper is the wrong fix

Depth sets how much softer the bed will feel. Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site, recommends a topper at least 5cm deep, and it warns that “A mattress topper isn’t a quick fix for a mattress that’s past its prime.” Use 5cm to take the edge off a firm mattress and 7 to 7.5cm for one that feels hard. A 10cm fibre topper looks deeper in the shop than it feels on the bed, because the filling compresses under your weight.

Before you buy, lie on the bare mattress and look for dips where you sleep. If you find them, start with our soft mattress comparison instead. If your bed feels too soft rather than too hard, you need a firm mattress topper instead.

Living with a soft topper

Foam toppers arrive vacuum-packed and need a day or so to reach full depth and lose the new-foam smell. Fibre and down toppers keep their loft best if you shake them out every few days and rotate them head to foot every couple of weeks. Anything 7cm or deeper usually needs a fitted sheet with a deeper pocket to go over both topper and mattress.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked these toppers on how much softer each one will make a firm but sound mattress, and on what that softness costs you in heat, care and support. Every pick has a soft or medium-soft feel, is at least 5cm deep and is sold in standard UK sizes, and each was in stock in a double at its seller when we checked prices in October 2026.

What decides the order

  • The soft layer. Its depth and its filling, because memory foam and latex soften by giving under pressure and fibre and down by their loft, the plumpness of the fill.
  • Support under the softness. Whether the topper holds its shape once you lie on it, or flattens until you feel the mattress again.
  • Heat. Memory foam and down keep more warmth near the body than latex, or fibre in a breathable cover.
  • Care and terms. Whether you can wash it at home, plus any trial, guarantee and returns policy.

Each topper carries our overall score out of 10, built from comfort (30%), support (25%), temperature (15%) and value (30%), with one rubric across every topper we rate. The list follows that score, and where two toppers tie, the one with the cheaper double comes first. Specifications and prices come from each seller’s own UK product page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best soft mattress topper in the UK?

The Starlight Beds 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper is our best soft topper overall, with 7.5cm of UK-made memory foam and a washable cover for £94.99 in a double. If you would rather avoid foam, the John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch Washable Dual Layer topper is the fibre alternative, and the Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay Latex Topper is the soft pick for hot sleepers.

Will a soft mattress topper make a hard mattress softer?

Yes. A 5cm topper takes the edge off a firm mattress and 7 to 7.5cm makes a hard one feel properly soft. Memory foam and latex soften by contouring to you, while fibre and down add a plump layer that compresses under your weight, so a 10cm fibre topper feels thinner on the bed than in the shop.

Which soft mattress topper is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers do best on a topper that contours, so the shoulder and hip can sink while the waist stays supported. The 7.5cm Starlight Beds memory foam topper contours the most here, and the 6cm Latex Sense Ultimate gives a similar cushion with more spring and less heat. See also our mattresses for side sleepers if your mattress itself is the problem.

Is a soft mattress topper good for back pain?

It can be, if it softens a hard bed towards medium and stops short of plush, because a very deep, soft layer lets the hips drop out of line with the shoulders. A 5 to 6cm topper, or the Emma Original Topper with its firmer second side, is the safer choice, and our mattresses for back pain help when the mattress needs replacing.

How thick should a soft mattress topper be?

Choose at least 5cm, 7 to 7.5cm for a mattress that feels hard, and remember that a 10cm fibre topper compresses to less under your weight. Our 10cm mattress topper comparison covers the deepest options.

Do soft mattress toppers make you hot?

Memory foam and down toppers trap the most body heat, so they can feel warm on summer nights. Natural latex such as the Latex Sense Ultimate Talalay and fibre in a cotton casing such as the Littens 4 Inch Ultimate sleep cooler.

Can you wash a soft mattress topper?

It depends on the filling. The Silentnight Anti-Allergy Ultimate 1000 and the CloudTopper wash whole, the John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch topper has an upper layer that unzips for the machine, and memory foam toppers like the Starlight Beds 7.5cm have a washable cover only. Down toppers are the hardest to clean, as the John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down topper is spot clean only and DUSK recommends professional laundering.

What is the difference between a soft mattress topper and a mattress pad?

In UK shops the names overlap, but a mattress pad or enhancer is usually a thin quilted layer of 1 to 3cm that mainly protects the mattress, while a topper is 5cm or deeper and changes how soft the bed feels.
