Comparison

Best single mattress toppers

A UK single mattress topper measures 90x190cm, and on a single bed it usually has one job: making a firm, tired or spare-room mattress comfortable for one sleeper without paying for a new mattress. The right single bed topper depends on who sleeps on it (a teenager every night, an adult on a sofa bed or a guest twice a year) and on how deep, how warm and how easy to clean it needs to be. Check whether the bed is a true single, a 75cm small single or a 90x200cm European single before you order, because a topper bought for one fits the others badly.

Emma Original Pro Topper
Emma Original Pro TopperEmma Original Pro TopperEmma Original Pro Topper
Best overall

Emma Original Pro Topper

For one adult on a single that feels too hard, the Emma Original Pro is the topper we would buy first. Its 9cm of graphite-infused foam over a springy HRX base cushions the shoulder and hip without the slow sink of memory foam, and heat was never a problem in our test.

We also tried it on an opened sofa bed, where the non-slip underside kept it from wandering overnight, so it is just as good a choice for a guest single. A single costs £259 and weighs about 9kg, light enough for one person to turn, and Emma gives it a 100-night trial.

Pros
  • 9cm, deep enough to mask a thin mattress
  • Graphite foam layer to shed heat
  • Non-slip base held firm on a sofa bed
  • About 9kg in a single, easy to turn
Cons
  • No memory-foam hug for pressure seekers
  • Can feel a little soft above about 100kg

Best British-made pick

Simba Hybrid Mattress Topper

Springs are what set the Simba Hybrid apart. Simba builds it in the UK with up to 1,900 Aerocoil microsprings under a Simbatex foam layer, 6.5cm in all, so it feels lively and lets air move where solid foam traps heat. Pros
  • Microsprings under foam, a lively feel
  • Made in the UK
  • 200-night trial, the longest here
  • Straps plus a slip-limiting base

Best for a choice of feel

Emma Original Topper

Not sure whether the sleeper wants a soft or a firmer surface? The Emma Original Topper has a soft Airgocell side and a firmer HRX side, so the sleeper can flip it instead of guessing, which suits a teenager who is still working out what they like. It is 6cm deep and costs £169 in a single, a sensible step down from the Pro when the room does not run warm.

Pros
  • Soft side and firm side in one topper
  • 6cm, above the 5cm most bed experts advise
  • Anti-slip underside
Cons
  • No cooling layer
  • Refitting after a flip takes effort

Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper
Best natural latex option

Latex Sense Luxury Dunlop Latex Topper

Natural Dunlop latex pushes back faster than memory foam, so the 6cm Latex Sense Luxury suits a single sleeper who turns a lot and hates feeling stuck. It is also the only pick here made as a true small single, which is where its £225 starting price comes from, and the standard 90x190 single costs £250. The cover cannot be washed, so plan on a protector over it. More latex options are in our latex topper ranking.

Pros
  • 6cm Dunlop latex, 65kg/m³, seven zones
  • True small single 75x190 sold
  • Free collection within 30 nights
  • 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Cover cannot be washed
  • Costs more than foam of the same depth

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper
John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress TopperJohn Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress TopperJohn Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper
Best natural wool topper

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper

A warm box room or a sleeper who runs hot is where wool earns its place. John Lewis fills this topper with 100% British wool under a 233-thread-count cotton cover, handcrafted in Lancashire, for £85 in a single.

Expect a layer that evens out temperature more than it softens. John Lewis does not publish the depth, so a sleeper who needs real cushioning is better served by the thicker wool options with a stated depth.

Pros
  • 100% British wool filling
  • Handcrafted in Lancashire
  • Cheapest natural fill on the page
  • Straps fit mattresses up to 36cm deep
Cons
  • Sponge or dry clean only
  • Depth not published
  • Returned only if unopened

IKEA Nordberget Mattress Pad

Best for easy returns

IKEA Nordberget Mattress Pad

IKEA's densest mattress pad puts 4.5cm of 50kg/m³ memory foam on a single for £99, enough to take the edge off a hard mattress for a side sleeper. Its double-sided cover comes off for a hot wash, and IKEA takes opened products back within 365 days, a safety net no other pick here matches. There are no straps, so on a restless child's bed it can creep.

Pros
  • 50kg/m³ memory foam, IKEA's densest pad
  • Cover washes at 60°C
  • 365-day returns, opened items included
Cons
  • No straps to hold it in place

Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper

Among the memory foam toppers, Panda's Bamboo is the value pick for a side sleeper on a firm single, with 5cm of 80kg/m³ HydroFoam memory foam for £99.95. Pros
  • 5cm HydroFoam at 80kg/m³
  • EU single 90x200 also sold
  • Corner straps and anti-slip base

Best budget deep topper

Silentnight Airmax 1000 Extra Deep Mattress Topper

Ten centimetres of hollowfibre for a regular £32 makes the Silentnight Airmax 1000 the cheapest way to turn a thin spare-room single plush. Air-mesh side walls let heat escape. Fibre flattens sooner than foam, so treat it as a soft layer to plump and replace, with little support for an adult's hips.

Pros
  • 10cm deep for the lowest price here
  • Air-mesh sides vent heat
  • Anti-allergy, anti-bacterial fibres
Cons
  • Flattens faster than foam
  • Softens without adding support

Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper

Best for cold sleepers

Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber Mattress Topper

For a single in a cold room, the Soak&Sleep Goose Down Dual Chamber adds the most warmth on this page. Its top chamber holds 70% goose down over a feather base, 7cm in all, adding warmth and a hotel-bed loft that the synthetic picks cannot match, for £145 in a single.

It suits a lighter or average-weight adult who wants softness more than support, and Soak&Sleep suggests a professional clean about every six months.

Pros
  • 70% goose down top chamber
  • Feather base keeps some loft under the down
  • Five-year guarantee
Cons
  • Professional clean every six months
  • Too warm for hot sleepers

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a single topper for the person who sleeps on it, their weight, how warm they run and how often the bed is used. The topper that suits a teenager's everyday bed is rarely the right one for a guest bed made up twice a year.”

Single, small single or European single

A standard UK single mattress topper measures 90x190cm, the size Bed Advice UK lists as 3ft by 6ft 3in. A small single is 75x190cm, so a single topper overhangs it by 15cm and rucks up at the edge. A European single of 90x200cm is 10cm longer, which leaves a bare strip at the foot under a UK single topper. Of the picks on this page, only the Latex Sense Luxury comes in a small single, and the Latex Sense and the Panda also sell a 90x200cm version.

Depth for the person, not the bed

One sleeper means one body weight to plan for, which makes depth easier to choose than on a shared double. The 5cm minimum is enough for a light child or teenager. An adult side sleeper on a hard single, or anyone on a thin sofa-bed mattress, gets more from 9 to 10cm of foam, such as the Emma Original Pro or the 10cm Dunelm Gel Fusion. Fibre and down add loft more than support, so the Airmax and the Soak&Sleep soften a single without holding a heavier adult’s hips level.

On a top bunk, depth is a safety question too. Bunk beds made to BS EN 747 carry a mark showing the maximum mattress height, and a topper counts towards it, because every extra centimetre brings the sleeper closer to the top of the guard rail. If the mattress already reaches the line, leave the topper off the top bunk.

Heat in a small room

Single beds often end up in the smallest bedroom of the house, where warmth builds up overnight. A review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that, with bedding in use, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. Solid memory foam, as in the IKEA Nordberget and the Panda, holds body heat. The John Lewis wool, the Simba’s springs, the Airmax’s mesh sides and the Emma Original Pro’s graphite foam run cooler, and the Soak&Sleep down is the one to pick when the room is cold.

Cleaning a single at home

The North West Allergy Network, an NHS service, advises: “Wash bedding and covers regularly at 60°C to kill dust mite.” The IKEA Nordberget is the only pick here whose cover is made for that temperature. The Emma and Simba covers wash at 40°C and Panda’s at up to 30°C, the John Lewis wool is sponge or dry clean only, and the Latex Sense cover cannot be washed. For a child with a mite allergy, a protector over the topper that takes a 60°C wash does the hygiene work, and our best mattress protectors compares them.

Topper or a new single mattress

A topper changes how a sound single feels. It cannot rescue one that sags, because the topper settles into the same dips. The sums are worth doing. The Emma Original Topper costs £169 in a single against £369 for the Emma Original mattress, and IKEA’s Nordberget pad costs £99 against £149 for the Valevåg pocket sprung single. If the mattress is past saving, start with our best single mattresses instead.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked single toppers on how much each one improves a sound 90x190cm mattress for one sleeper. Every pick had to be listed and in stock as a UK single on the seller’s own page when we checked prices on 4 and 5 October 2026. The REM-Fit Halo would have ranked near the top but dropped out at that stage, because its UK single was out of stock.

What decides the order

Each product carries our overall score out of 10, which weighs comfort at 30%, support at 25%, temperature at 15% and value at 30%. The cards and the guide below also report five practical checks for a bed one person sleeps on: depth against the 5cm minimum recommended by Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site; how well the topper stays in place; how easily one person can lift and turn it; how it is cleaned; and the price in a single next to the cost of a new single mattress.

The order itself follows the overall score, and where two scores tie, the cheaper single ranks first. That puts the Emma Original Topper above the Latex Sense Luxury and the John Lewis wool topper above the IKEA Nordberget.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a single mattress topper in the UK?

A UK single mattress topper measures 90x190cm, the 3ft by 6ft 3in standard single. A small single is 75x190cm and a European single 90x200cm, so measure the mattress before you order.

Will a single topper fit a small single or a 90x200 bed?

No, not neatly. A 90cm topper overhangs a 75cm small single by 15cm and stops 10cm short on a 90x200cm European single. The Latex Sense Luxury comes as a true small single for £225, and the Panda Bamboo as a 90x200cm EU single for £104.95.

How thick should a single mattress topper be?

At least 5cm for a noticeable change, which is enough for most children and light adults. Adult side sleepers on a firm single do better with 9 to 10cm, such as the 9cm Emma Original Pro or the 10cm Dunelm Gel Fusion.

Can you put a mattress topper on a bunk bed?

Yes on a bottom bunk. On a top bunk, the mattress and topper together must stay below the maximum mattress line marked on frames made to BS EN 747, because extra depth brings the sleeper closer to the top of the guard rail. If the mattress already reaches the line, leave the topper off.

Is a topper cheaper than a new single mattress?

Usually, yes. The Emma Original Topper costs £169 in a single against £369 for an Emma Original single mattress, but no topper fixes a single that already sags.

What is the best cheap single mattress topper?

The Silentnight Airmax 1000 Extra Deep gives the most depth for the money, 10cm of hollowfibre for a regular £32 in a single. For a natural fill, the John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool topper costs £85.

Which mattress topper is best for a sofa bed or guest single?

We recommend the Emma Original Pro Topper, which we tested on an opened sofa bed. Its 9cm of foam masked the thin mattress, and the non-slip base stopped it moving overnight.
