“Buy the Emma Original Pro Topper if heat or a hard mattress is the problem, and the Original Topper if you only want to fine-tune the firmness. Neither will rescue a mattress that has already sagged.”
Original or Original Pro, firmness against cooling
Emma sells two toppers in the UK, and they solve different problems. The Emma Original Topper is 6cm deep and reversible, with a softer Airgocell side and a firmer HRX side, so you flip it to change the feel of your bed. The Emma Original Pro Topper is 9cm deep with a graphite-infused ThermoSync layer that is meant to face up, so it trades the flip for cooling and extra depth. On its UK toppers page Emma says it has sold over 680,000 toppers worldwide and that the graphite helps the body reach a sleeping temperature of around 35.5°C faster. That temperature is Emma’s own figure, not an independent measurement.
A review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that “In real-life situations where bedding and clothing are used, heat exposure increases wakefulness and decreases slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep.” The NHS gives the same advice in plainer words, “You may find it easier to sleep in a room that is quiet, dark and cool.” If you wake up warm, the Original Pro is the Emma topper to buy. If you sleep cool and your mattress is only a shade too hard or too soft, the Original does the job for less.
Prices at each brand’s own UK shop, checked 28 September 2026. *Emma’s buy box and the promise section on each topper page say 100 nights and up to 10 years; the FAQ further down the same pages says 30 nights and 2 years.
Depth, and why 5cm is the floor
Depth decides how much a topper changes your bed. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, suggests a topper at least 5cm deep, because anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference. Every topper here meets that, and the 9cm Emma Original Pro clears it with the most room to spare. The Original Topper splits its 6cm between a softer Airgocell side and a firmer HRX side, so it is the Emma to choose if you mainly want to make a firm mattress softer.
Trial and guarantee, read both lines
Emma’s terms for toppers are inconsistent on its own site. The buy box and the promise section on each topper page give 100 nights and up to 10 years, while the FAQ on the Original Topper and Original Pro Topper pages says 30 nights and a 2-year warranty. Ask Emma to confirm the terms in writing before you order. Simba gives both of its toppers a 200-night trial and a 10-year guarantee, the clearest terms in this comparison. OTTY allows 14 nights and one year on its Bamboo & Charcoal topper, and Silentnight offers no trial on the Impress, only a 2-year guarantee.
When no topper will help
A topper changes the feel of a mattress, not its structure. Emma’s own product FAQ says no topper helps once a mattress has deformed, and Bed Advice UK warns that a topper on a mattress with deep dips quickly takes on those same dips. If yours has a dip you can see, our Emma mattress comparison is the better starting point.
