How it changes a mattress

Memory foam moulds to your shape under body heat, which is why a 5cm layer takes the edge off a firm mattress at the shoulders and hips. It also holds more body heat than fibre, which matters if you sleep warm. We rate the Impress 5cm as medium-soft, 4 out of 10, on a typical mattress.

A topper cannot fix support. If your mattress has a dip, the foam will follow it. The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every 7 to 8 years, and a topper is best used within that window to adjust comfort, not to extend it.

The removable cover is the practical advantage over many cheaper foam toppers, since Silentnight lists only the cover as machine washable. Give the topper time to recover its full 5cm after unpacking before judging the feel.
