“Buy a 10cm fibre topper to make a firm but sound mattress softer and warmer, and expect to shake it back into shape regularly. If your mattress already sags or you sleep hot, spend the money on that problem first.”
What 10cm of fibre changes
A 10cm mattress topper softens and warms a bed. It does not add support. Almost every topper sold in the UK at this depth is a quilted hollowfibre or microfibre layer, which flattens with use and needs regular shaking to fluff it back up, where a foam topper keeps its height. Softness is the reason to put up with that.
That makes a deep fibre topper a sensible fix for a mattress that is sound but too hard. A randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet in 2003 (Kovacs et al.), found that after 90 days people on medium-firm mattresses had better outcomes for pain in bed than people on firm ones, with an odds ratio of 2.36. The trial compared mattresses, so treat it as a case against sleeping on a very hard surface rather than as evidence that any topper here treats back pain.
When a thick topper will not help
No topper rescues a mattress that has dipped. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, warns that “If your current mattress has deep dips or has lost its shape, any topper you put on it will quickly mold to those same dips, offering little to no improvement.” Soft fibre follows the shape beneath it, so press a flat hand across the mattress where you sleep before you order. If you can feel a hollow, our mattress ranking is the better place to spend the money.
Fibre or foam at this depth
Foam at 10cm is rare and costs several times more. The one mainstream 10cm foam topper we found, the Dunelm Gel Fusion, was £180 in a 10cm double at the time of writing, against £35.05 for the Silentnight Airmax 1000. Pick foam if you want pressure relief that keeps its height, and compare the options in our memory foam topper ranking. Pick fibre for a plump, cosy feel at a fraction of the price, and accept the shaking.
Warmth
Ten centimetres of polyester holds heat. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom at around 16 to 18°C and says temperatures over 24°C are likely to cause restlessness. If you already sleep warm, the Silentnight Airmax 1000 with its air-mesh sides or the Slumberdown Sleep Soundly in its Climate Control version are the safer choices, as none of the other picks publishes a cooling feature. For foam, wool and gel toppers built to run cooler, see our cooling topper comparison. If you sleep cold, a deep fibre topper is simply a warmer bed.
Washing and fit
Check whether the whole topper or only its cover goes in the machine. For people with a dust mite allergy, the NHS advises you to “use synthetic bedding and covers, and wash bedding regularly at 60C and above”. The highest temperature any seller on this page publishes is 40°C (Slumberdown), and OHS limits its topper to 30°C with no tumble drying, so allergy sufferers should add a mattress protector that takes a hot wash.
Add 10cm to your mattress depth when you buy fitted sheets. Five picks come as a small double, and the Littens and Acrali Home versions are 122cm wide. Snuggledown makes its super king 220cm long, so it overhangs a standard 200cm super king mattress. For the widest choice of fills in each size, see our double and king size topper comparisons, or the overall topper ranking.
