OHS Deep Sleep Mattress Topper reviewed

The OHS Deep Sleep Mattress Topper is a 10cm polyester hollowfibre topper sold by Online Home Shop, and at £25 for a single it is one of the cheapest 10cm toppers you can buy direct in the UK. It makes a firm mattress noticeably softer. It does not add support, and it asks more of your washing routine than its price suggests.

Construction

According to the OHS product page, the outer is 100% polyester microfibre and the filling is 100% polyester hollowfibre, box-quilted into squares and held on with elasticated corner straps. OHS publishes no fill weight, so the 10cm depth is the only guide to how much fibre sits inside. Hollowfibre settles with use, so the 10cm you unpack is a starting point, and keeping it depends on shaking the topper out regularly.

OHS shows the double, king and super king below their regular prices with no end date for the offer. The single is not reduced.

Washing and dust mites

The whole topper goes in the washing machine at 30°C, but the care label rules out tumble drying, bleach and dry cleaning, so a double has to dry flat or over a rail. For anyone with a dust mite allergy, 30°C is the weak point. The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis recommends synthetic bedding washed regularly at 60C and above, and the dust mite leaflet from Cambridge University Hospitals warns that “A cooler wash will only partly kill the mites”. The synthetic fill meets the first half of that advice and misses the second, so on an allergy-prone bed this topper belongs under a fully enclosing, washable barrier cover.

Standard UK delivery costs £3.95 with dispatch in three to five days, express delivery £6.95 and guaranteed next-day delivery £9.99. OHS offers no sleep trial and states no guarantee, and you have 14 days from delivery to tell it you want to return an item.

The Deep Sleep suits a firm spare bed, a student room or a short-term fix on a mattress that is still flat and supportive. Side sleepers who find a firm mattress hard on the shoulders will notice the change most. If you have back pain and need a firmer, more even surface, a foam or latex topper is the better match.
