Comparison

Best wool mattress toppers

A wool mattress topper puts a layer of fleece between you and the mattress, and the ones worth buying differ on four points: how much wool is inside, whether the fill is pure wool or a polyester blend, where the wool comes from and how you can clean it. We ranked wool toppers sold in UK sizes on those points, with answers for hot sleepers, dust-mite allergy and anyone weighing a wool against a cotton mattress topper.

Best value

Soak&Sleep New Zealand Mitchell Wool Mattress Topper

Soak&Sleep's New Zealand Mitchell Wool Mattress Topper costs £150 in a king, less than half the Woolroom Deluxe's regular price, for 100% New Zealand wool in an unbleached 233 thread count cotton case with a five-year guarantee. Soak&Sleep gives 365 days to return it unused and calls it machine washable, though it advises a professional wash every six months. At 2.5cm it adds a breathable layer rather than softness, and there is no single or small double.

Pros
  • 100% New Zealand wool fill
  • 365 days to return it unused
  • Five-year guarantee
  • Machine washable, per Soak&Sleep
Cons
  • 2.5cm, too thin to soften a firm bed
  • No single or small double

Best premium pick

Woolroom Organic Wool Mattress Topper

For certified organic wool and more fill than the Deluxe, choose the Woolroom Organic Wool Mattress Topper, which holds 1,300gsm of organic British wool, about 3.9kg in a king by our calculation. The cover is unbleached 300 thread count organic cotton, the topper is 5-7cm deep and it has the same 30-night trial as the Deluxe. It scores higher than the Soak&Sleep but ranks below it because a king costs £337.49, about three times as much. Like the Deluxe, it is dry clean only.

Pros
  • 1,300gsm certified organic British wool
  • About 3.9kg of wool in a king
  • Unbleached 300 thread count organic cotton
  • 30-night sleep trial
Cons
  • Dry clean only
  • Costs more than the Deluxe in every size

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a wool topper by its declared fill weight and its care label, not by the photo. No seller in this list offers a 60°C wash for its topper, so if dust mites are your problem, budget for a washable protector on top as well.”

Check how much wool is inside

The fill weight is the most useful number on a wool topper, and only some sellers publish it. It is given in gsm, grams of filling per square metre. Woolroom states 1,000gsm for the Deluxe, 1,300gsm for the Organic, 1,500gsm across the three wool layers of the Woolly Sprung and 2,950gsm for the Ryeland. Homescapes quotes 800gsm, but half of that filling is polyester. Soak&Sleep, John Lewis, Devon Duvets, Fogarty and Naturalmat give no gsm, so depth and price are all you can compare.

Depth is a loose guide with wool. Devon Duvets says its topper has a loft of around 5cm that compresses when you lie on it. The National Bed Federation’s Bed Advice UK suggests a topper at least 5cm deep and adds that “Anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference in comfort.” The 2.5cm Soak&Sleep and Naturalmat toppers sit below that line, so treat them as a breathable layer rather than a way to soften the bed.

Pure wool, blend, and where the wool comes from

Seven of the ten toppers are filled with wool alone. The Homescapes is a 50/50 blend with polyester, and the Woolly Sprung and the Ryeland put a layer of steel microcoils under their wool. Provenance claims differ in how far you can check them. British Wool, which grades and sells the fleece of its farmer members, says it can trace every bale back to the farm and runs eight grading depots across the UK. Devon Duvets uses wool certified by British Wool. Woolroom runs its own Wool ID scheme for farm-level traceability. Naturalmat buys organic wool from Soil Association certified farms in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Soak&Sleep fills its topper with New Zealand wool and names China as the country of manufacture.

Wool also shapes how a topper meets British fire rules. Naturalmat states that the Frome complies with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 and BS 7177 with a cotton and wool cover instead of chemical flame retardants.

What wool does for heat, and what the evidence shows

Wool’s case for hot sleepers rests on moisture. A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Sleep Research (Li et al.) notes that wool has a higher water vapour permeability than cotton and polyester, which lets sweat evaporate and keeps skin drier. The same review screened 2,362 references and found only nine studies comparing fibre types on sleep, none of them on a wool mattress topper. In one of them, Shin et al. (2016), 17 young adults slept in a sleep laboratory at 17°C and 22°C. At 17°C they fell asleep in 9.9 minutes on average in wool sleepwear against 18.1 minutes in cotton, yet swapping the duvet between wool and polyester made no measurable difference.

So read sleep-improvement percentages on shop pages with care. What wool reliably gives you is a breathable, moisture-absorbing layer, and the room matters as much. The NHS advice on hot flushes and night sweats lists keeping your bedroom cool at night among the first things to try.

Washing, dust mites and allergies

Allergy UK‘s house dust mite factsheet says “Washing at 60 degrees centigrade or above will kill mites.” No topper in this list is sold as washable at that temperature. For anything that cannot take a hot wash, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust recommends allergen barrier covers and calls them the single most effective measure, though not enough on their own. In practice that means a washable, breathable protector or cotton mattress cover over the topper.

Care splits the ten into three groups. The Fogarty and Homescapes go in a home washing machine, and Soak&Sleep calls its topper machine washable but advises a professional wash about every six months because of its size. The two quilted Woolroom toppers and the John Lewis are dry clean only. The Devon Duvets, the Woolly Sprung and the Ryeland are spot clean only. Claims that wool repels mites come from the sellers rather than from the allergy bodies quoted here, which is why the barrier cover matters whichever topper you choose.

Sizes, trials and guarantees

A wool topper is hard to judge before you sleep on it, so the returns terms carry weight. Only the four Woolroom toppers come with a 30-night sleep trial. Size ranges also differ widely, from three sizes at Soak&Sleep to ten at Woolroom, and Naturalmat will make any size to measure.

If wool is not a must, our ranking of the best mattress toppers covers every material, the memory foam comparison covers the most common alternative, our feather and latex topper rankings the other natural fills, and hot sleepers can weigh wool against gel and latex in our cooling mattress topper ranking. Prices for other sizes are in our double and king size topper comparisons.

Methodology

How we rate

We compared ten wool mattress toppers sold in standard UK sizes and checked each one’s price and stock on the brand’s or retailer’s UK site on 28 September 2026. Fill, fill weight, depth, cover, care instructions, trial and guarantee come from each merchant’s product page. Where a merchant publishes a fill weight in gsm (grams of filling per square metre), we multiplied it by the 3 square metres of a UK king (150x200) to estimate how much wool you get. That column in the buying guide is our calculation, not a figure the sellers state. Prices are regular prices in a king unless we name another size; a sale running when you read this shows on the product cards.

Each overall score out of 10 weighs comfort 30%, support 25%, temperature 15% and value 30%. On a wool topper four things moved the scores and the order most.

  • Wool content, meaning a declared gsm, and a pure wool fill ahead of a blend.
  • Provenance you can check, such as British Wool traceability, Woolroom’s Wool ID or Soil Association certified farms.
  • Care, because a dry-clean-only topper costs more to keep clean than a machine-washable one.
  • The buying package, meaning the king price, a sleep trial or returns window, the guarantee and how many UK sizes one seller stocks.

That package, not the score alone, sets the order, so the Woolroom Deluxe and the Soak&Sleep sit above toppers that score higher. The John Lewis, Devon Duvets and Fogarty toppers have no trial or published fill weight, the Homescapes is half polyester, and the Woolroom Organic, Woolly Sprung and Ryeland cost more in a king. Certifications are named as the sellers state them; OEKO-TEX Standard 100, for example, tests every component of a textile against more than 1,000 harmful substances.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wool mattress topper in the UK?

The Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper is our best wool mattress topper, with 1,000gsm of traceable British wool, ten UK sizes and a 30-night sleep trial, at £247.49 for a king. If you can do without a trial, the John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper is 100% British wool for £105 in a king.

Are wool mattress toppers good for hot sleepers?

Yes, wool is one of the more breathable topper fillings, because it has a higher water vapour permeability than cotton or polyester, according to a 2024 review in the Journal of Sleep Research. The measured effect on sleep is modest, and in a 2016 sleep-laboratory study of 17 adults, the one study in that review to compare a wool duvet with a polyester one, the bedding made no difference. A thin wool layer such as the 2.5cm Soak&Sleep New Zealand Mitchell works best alongside a cool bedroom, which the NHS lists among its tips for night sweats.

Can you wash a wool mattress topper?

Most wool toppers cannot go in a washing machine. Of the ten here, the Fogarty Unbleached, the Homescapes Premium and the Soak&Sleep New Zealand Mitchell are sold as machine washable (Soak&Sleep still advises a professional wash about every six months), the Woolroom Deluxe, Woolroom Organic and John Lewis toppers are dry clean only, and the Devon Duvets, Woolroom Woolly Sprung and Woolroom Ryeland are spot clean only.

Is a wool mattress topper good for a dust mite allergy?

Only with a washable cover on top, because none of the ten toppers here can be washed at 60°C, the temperature Allergy UK says kills mites. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust suggests dry cleaning bedding that cannot take a hot wash and calls allergen barrier covers the single most effective measure. Woolroom says its toppers carry the Allergy UK Seal of Approval.

Is a cotton or wool mattress topper better?

Wool has the edge for temperature, since the 2024 Journal of Sleep Research review reports that wool lets water vapour through more readily than cotton or polyester. A cotton mattress topper is usually easier to wash, but check the care label before you buy. Most toppers on this page combine the two, with a wool filling inside a cotton cover such as the 300 thread count organic cotton of the Woolroom Organic.

How much does a wool mattress topper cost in a single or double?

A pure wool double costs £95 for the John Lewis Natural Collection, £125 for the Soak&Sleep New Zealand Mitchell and £217.49 for the Woolroom Deluxe, while the wool and polyester Homescapes Premium is £79.99. In a single (90x190), the John Lewis is £85 and the Devon Duvets topper £160, and the Soak&Sleep is not sold in a single at all. Our double mattress topper comparison covers the size across every material.

How thick should a wool mattress topper be?

Aim for about 5cm if you want the bed to feel softer, the minimum the National Bed Federation's Bed Advice UK suggests for a noticeable change. The Woolroom Organic (5-7cm) and Devon Duvets (about 5cm) meet that, the Woolroom Woolly Sprung (9-10cm) and Ryeland (10cm) add microcoils under the wool, and 2.5cm toppers such as the Naturalmat Frome mainly add breathability or hide the join on a zip-and-link bed.

What is the difference between a sheepskin and a wool mattress topper?

A sheepskin topper is a tanned hide with the fleece still attached, while a wool mattress topper is loose wool carded into a layer and quilted inside a fabric cover. All ten toppers on this page are the quilted kind, which is why their makers can state a fill weight, such as the 1,000gsm in the Woolroom Deluxe.
