The Homescapes Premium Wool Mattress Topper is a 4 cm topper filled with 800 gsm of a 50% Australian wool and 50% polyester blend in a 233 thread count cotton cover, priced from £59.99 for a single. It adds a thin, breathable layer rather than deep cushioning, and Homescapes aims it at people who run too hot one night and too cold the next.

What the wool does, and what the research shows

Homescapes says the wool keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter, credits its moisture-wicking properties for a drier sleep, and pitches the topper at menopausal night sweats. The measured effect on sleep is thinner than that marketing suggests. In a University of Sydney study published in Nature and Science of Sleep in 2016 (Shin et al.), 17 healthy young adults slept nine nights in a sleep laboratory at 17°C and 22°C; wool sleepwear shortened the time taken to fall asleep compared with cotton, but the researchers found no effect of wool bedding against polyester bedding. Two of the authors worked for The Woolmark Company. Treat this topper as a comfortable, moisture-friendly layer, not a sleep treatment.

Certification, care and allergies

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label is printed on the topper’s own bag and sewn-in label, and OEKO-TEX says every labelled item is tested against a list of more than 1,000 harmful substances. Homescapes’ product artwork also carries the Woolmark logo. The 30°C wash is gentle on wool but is well below the 60°C that the NHS recommends for bedding when you have allergic rhinitis, so the “anti-dust mite” claim on the bag is best backed up with a barrier cover if dust mites are your trigger.

Returns are accepted within 30 days if the topper is unused, unwashed and in its original packaging. There is no sleep trial and no stated guarantee.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Buy it if you want a thin, washable wool-blend layer that takes the edge off a firm mattress and handles moisture better than plain polyester. At 4 cm and half polyester it will not transform a hard bed, and a 2016 sleep-lab study found no measurable effect of wool bedding on sleep, so buy it for comfort, not as a sleep aid.”
