The Woolroom Organic Wool Mattress Topper holds 1,300gsm of certified organic British wool in a 300 thread count organic cotton cover, 300gsm more wool than the Deluxe, for a depth of about 5-7 cm. It costs £299.99 in a single at the regular price, and it is the topper to choose from Woolroom if organic certification of the wool itself matters to you.

Construction and specification

The wool is carded and enveloped in unbleached organic cotton that is free from dyes, with elasticated corner straps for mattresses up to 35 cm deep. Woolroom traces every batch to the farm through Wool ID, and the Woolroom Organic product page names the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate, number 11-71942.

The organic claim covers the wool as well as the cover. On its certifications page, Woolroom says its 100% organic collection holds British Wool’s Authentic Traceable Organic British Wool certification, and the product page traces the filling to independently audited farms.

Allergy claims, read carefully

Woolroom markets the Organic as naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, and its bedding holds the Allergy UK Seal of Approval, which names house dust mites, mould and fungi. Independent research is less settled. A survey of 80 homes in Victoria, Australia, published in Allergy in 1998 (Garrett et al.) linked wool bedding and inner-spring mattresses with significantly higher dust mite allergen levels in beds, and estimated that avoiding both could cut bed allergen levels by up to 70%. If a diagnosed dust mite allergy is your main reason to buy, speak to your GP or allergy clinic before relying on any bedding claim.

Who it suits

The Organic suits side sleepers and anyone softening a firm mattress who prefers natural, certified fibres to foam. The extra 300gsm gives it more loft than the Deluxe, although a 5-7 cm wool pad still compresses under the hip. The 30-night trial is useful at this price, because it lets you sleep on the wool before you commit. The weak points are the price and the care, since it is dry clean only and cannot go in a washing machine.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Choose the Organic over the Deluxe if you want certified organic wool and a thicker 5-7 cm layer that does more to soften a firm mattress. If you want bedding you can wash at home, look elsewhere, because this one is dry clean only.”
