The Emma Original Pro Topper is a 9 cm topper, including a 1 cm cover, with a graphite-infused ThermoSync foam layer over HRX foam, sold from £259 for a UK single. It was called the Emma Premium Topper until January 2026. We tested it on a mattress and on a sofa bed. It adds genuine depth and sleeps cool, but it supports rather than hugs.

Comfort and firmness in our test

It is soft, but not in the way most people imagine a topper. There is no memory foam in it. The top layer gives under your shoulder and hip, then pushes straight back, so you rest on it rather than sink into it, and you can change position without climbing out of a hollow. On your side the shoulder finds its place, on your back the pelvis does not drop, and front sleepers benefit because the springy foam stops the lower back dipping. Emma rates it medium-firm, and we agree at 6 out of 10. Above about 100 kg it may feel a little soft, as the HRX base reaches its limit.

What is inside

Two foams and a cover, according to Emma’s Original Pro Topper product page. The ThermoSync comfort layer is infused with graphite particles that conduct heat away from the body, and the HRX base gives the bounce and resists flattening. Emma does not publish the thickness of each layer or their densities, which would make comparisons easier.

Temperature

Heat was never a problem in our test. The cooling is moderate rather than dramatic, but it clearly sleeps cooler than a classic memory foam topper. That matters, because a review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that heat exposure under bedding increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. Emma lists a Good Housekeeping Institute Approved 2025 award for this topper.

On a mattress that is too firm, and on a sofa bed

This is the use we recommend first. At 9 cm it adds a real comfort layer, well above the 5 cm minimum that Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site, suggests for a topper to make a noticeable difference. There is a limit. On a mattress with a real hollow, the same guide warns, a topper simply follows the dip, and the FAQ on Emma’s own product page agrees that no topper helps once a mattress has deformed. At that point the money is better spent on a new mattress.

We also tried it on a sofa bed, and we recommend it for that job. Sofa bed mattresses are thin, often hard, and their fabric is slippery. The depth fixes the first problem and the non-slip base the second: laid on the opened sofa bed, it did not wander during the night.

UK small double 120 x 190 about 10 kg £329

Prices are Emma’s regular prices, checked on 28 September 2026. Emma’s trial page gives toppers 100 nights and its guarantee page promises up to 10 years, which matches the product details. The FAQ on the product page says 30 nights and 2 years, so ask Emma to confirm the terms in writing when you order. The cover goes in the washing machine at 40°C; avoid the tumble dryer, bleach and the iron, and turn the topper head to foot every three months so it wears evenly.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“A very good topper, provided you know what you are buying: at 9 cm it supports and springs back rather than hugging you. It is our first choice for softening a mattress that is too firm and a real fix for a sofa bed; if you want the cocooning feel of memory foam, or weigh over 100 kg, choose another.”
