Comparison

Best cot mattresses

A cot mattress should be firm and flat, as the NHS advises, with a waterproof cover and a fit that leaves no gaps around the edge, as The Lullaby Trust adds. After that, the choice comes down to the 60x120 cot size or the 70x140 cot bed size, springs, fibre or natural coir, a cover you can wash, and whether one dual-sided mattress should carry your child from birth into the toddler years. Our ranking compares cot and cot bed mattresses sold in the UK on exactly those points.

Best overall

Mamas & Papas Premium Dual Core+ Cotbed Mattress

The Mamas & Papas Premium Dual Core+ is the cot mattress we would buy first, because it pairs a firm baby side with a softer toddler side over pocket springs and coir latex, under a cover that zips fully off for washing. One 10cm mattress then lasts from the newborn months until your child leaves the cot bed.

Pros
  • One mattress from birth to toddler
  • Independent pocket springs
  • Airmesh cover zips off all the way round
Cons
  • No waterproof layer of its own, so add a fitted waterproof protector

Best easy-clean option

Snüz SnuzSurface Duo Cot Bed Mattress

The Snüz SnuzSurface Duo pairs a 3D mesh top with a waterproof membrane in a cover that goes in the washing machine at 40°C, so spills stay out of the core.

Underneath, the 10cm pocket sprung core has a firmer foam side for babies and a medium side you flip to for a toddler. Snüz makes it in the 60x120 cot size, the 70x140 cot bed size and the 68x117 size of its own SnuzKot.

Pros
  • Waterproof membrane inside a washable cover
  • Two support levels on one pocket sprung core

  • Needs seven days to expand after unrolling

Best high-street pick

John Lewis Pocket Spring Cotbed Mattress

John Lewis's own Pocket Spring mattress has a removable top layer that lifts off for washing, so a leak means washing one layer rather than stripping a whole cover.

It is rated firm from birth for children up to 21kg. The 70x140 cot bed version with 190 pocket springs costs £149. The 60x120 cot version, with 136 springs, costs £99 when in stock, but it was sold out when we last checked. John Lewis's page names no safety standard.

Pros
  • Top layer washes on its own
  • Made in the UK
Cons
  • Sold only through John Lewis

Silver Cross TrueFit Reversible Pocket Spring Cot Bed Mattress

Silver Cross designed the TrueFit Reversible to be turned for even wear, and both faces of the 11cm pocket spring core give the same firm support, so the feel does not change when you rotate it as a baby grows into a toddler.

Its corners are shaped to match the cot frame, which Silver Cross calls TrueFit.

CuddleCo Lullaby Bamboo Foam Cot Mattress

Best budget pick

CuddleCo Lullaby Bamboo Foam Cot Mattress

At £59.99 for a 60x120 cot, the CuddleCo Lullaby is the cheapest mattress here. Its core is firm nursery-grade foam. A second, waterproof side covers the potty training months.

At 7cm it is the thinnest pick, which suits a baby but gives a toddler in a cot bed less cushioning. CuddleCo does not list a safety standard for it.

Pros
  • Waterproof second side for potty training
  • Bamboo-fabric sleeping side
Cons
  • Only 7cm deep
  • Foam core can only be sponge cleaned
  • One-year guarantee

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Most of the extra money in a cot mattress buys the toddler years, with a softer second side, a cover that survives potty training and a core built to last. If you plan to buy a new mattress for your next baby anyway, a simple single-sided one covers the baby months just as well.”

The NHS guidance on reducing the risk of SIDS lists “use a firm, flat mattress” among its steps, and The Lullaby Trust, the UK charity for safer baby sleep, adds that the mattress should fit the cot with no gaps. Its guide to buying safer sleep essentials also notes that “For safer sleep you don’t need to buy lots of products or spend more on expensive items.” Beyond a firm, flat surface and stated BS EN 16890 compliance, which six of our nine picks name, what separates the picks is comfort, durability and convenience.

Measure the cot, then buy that size

Most UK cots take a 60x120 mattress and most cot beds a 70x140 one, but some frames have their own sizes. Older oval Stokke Sleepi cots need 68x122, Snüz’s SnuzKot 68x117, and Mamas & Papas sells its 60x120 mattresses for what it calls small cotbeds. Measure the inside of the cot base and buy that exact size, never the nearest one. Travel cots have smaller bases of their own, and our travel cot mattress comparison matches replacement mattresses to named cot models. According to a technical summary by the Italian furniture test lab CATAS, the cot standard EN 716-1 requires the gap between mattress and cot sides to be less than 30mm, and BS EN 16890 holds the mattress to within 10mm of its stated width and length.

Firm and flat matter more than the filling

The Lullaby Trust’s test is that your baby’s head should sink no more than a few millimetres into the mattress. BS EN 16890 also includes a firmness test for mattresses deeper than 30mm, in which a weighted sphere standing in for a baby’s head is pressed into the surface. Springs, fibre, foam and coir can all pass it, and what differs is depth, weight, how the cover is cleaned and price. A waterproof cover matters more than a breathable one. The Trust’s buying guide also warns that “Claims that a product will decrease the risk of SIDS are almost always not true.”

A waterproof layer and a cover you can wash

A waterproof layer stops spills and nappy leaks soaking into the core, where bacteria can build up. The Lullaby Trust advises a mattress protected by a waterproof cover, and a fitted waterproof protector does that job on mattresses without one. Two picks have a waterproof layer of their own. The Snüz Duo has a waterproof membrane inside its washable cover, and CuddleCo gives the Lullaby a whole waterproof side. Mamas & Papas describes its fixed inner protector as wipe-clean rather than waterproof, Simba and Silver Cross call their layers water-resistant, and The Little Green Sheep, Naturalmat, John Lewis and Tutti Bambini name no waterproof layer at all. Add a waterproof mattress protector to any of those seven.

One sleeping side or two

A dual-sided mattress has a firm side for babies and a softer side you turn to once your child is a toddler. Simba, for example, tells parents to flip its cot bed mattress when the child turns one. It saves buying a second mattress when a cot bed becomes a toddler bed, although the Trust recommends, where possible, a new mattress for each new baby. A single-sided mattress is just as safe and costs less. When your child moves to a full-size bed, our single mattress ranking is the next stop, and adult mattresses are covered in our main mattress comparison.

Methodology

How we rate

Every mattress here gives a firm, flat sleeping surface for babies; on dual-sided models the softer side is for toddlers only. Beyond that, the order rests on how long the mattress serves (a dual-sided baby and toddler design counts for more than a single surface), the support build, how easily the cover or top layer comes clean, and the regular price in each cot size against the guarantee.

On each maker’s UK page we checked whether the mattress has a waterproof layer of its own and whether the maker states compliance with BS EN 16890, the British and European standard for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses. Both are listed for every pick in the table in the buying guide. No product gains a place for claiming to lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, because The Lullaby Trust advises parents to be cautious about such claims. We checked every price and stock level on 4 October 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cot mattress in the UK?

The Mamas & Papas Premium Dual Core+ is our top pick, a 10cm dual-sided pocket sprung mattress with a firm baby side and a softer toddler side, at a regular £199 for a 60x120 cot. For a waterproof cover you can put in the washing machine, the Snüz SnuzSurface Duo costs £155 in the same size.

What size is a cot mattress in the UK?

A standard UK cot mattress measures 60x120 and a cot bed mattress 70x140, and the picks on this page are 7 to 11cm deep. Measure the inside of your cot before you buy, because frames such as older oval Stokke Sleepi cots (68x122) and the Snüz SnuzKot (68x117) need their own sizes.

Is a cot bed mattress the same as a cot mattress?

No. A cot bed mattress is 70x140, 10cm wider and 20cm longer than a 60x120 cot mattress, because a cot bed later converts into a toddler bed. Put a cot mattress in a cot bed and it leaves gaps far beyond the 30mm the cot standard allows, so buy the size the frame was made for.

How firm should a cot mattress be?

Firm enough that your baby's head sinks no more than a few millimetres, according to The Lullaby Trust, and completely flat with no raised or cushioned edges.

Do I need a new cot mattress for a second baby?

The Lullaby Trust recommends a new mattress for each baby where possible, noting that some research has linked second-hand mattresses from outside the family home with a higher risk of SIDS, although the link has not been proven. If you do reuse one, it should have a fully waterproof cover, no tears or sagging, a fire-resistant label and an exact fit in the cot.

Which safety standard should a cot mattress meet?

Look for BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021, which sets safety requirements and test methods for cot, travel cot and crib mattresses, and BS 7177, which covers resistance to ignition; both are on The Lullaby Trust's list of standards for baby sleep products. Mamas & Papas, The Little Green Sheep, Snüz, Simba, Naturalmat and Silver Cross state BS EN 16890 on their product pages; for John Lewis, CuddleCo and Tutti Bambini (which cites BS 1877 and BS 7177), ask the retailer to confirm BS EN 16890 compliance before you buy. The Trust points out that meeting a standard does not on its own make a product safe when it comes to reducing the risk of SIDS.

Are pocket sprung cot mattresses better than foam?

Neither is safer; sprung models add depth and, their makers say, airflow, while foam costs less. The sprung Tutti Bambini costs £110 in a cot bed, while the 7cm CuddleCo Lullaby foam mattress is cheaper but thinner.

Can I buy a cot bed with a mattress included?

Yes, Mamas & Papas and Tutti Bambini both sell cot bed bundles that include one of their own mattresses. Check the bundled mattress against the frame size and its own spec sheet, exactly as you would with one bought separately.
