Best gel mattress toppers

A gel mattress topper, often sold as a cool gel or gel-infused mattress topper, is a layer of memory foam with gel mixed into it as particles, capsules or beads, or laid on top as a separate gel foam layer, to soak up some of the heat that plain memory foam holds against your body. This comparison ranks the gel toppers sold in UK sizes by how the gel is built in, how deep and firm the topper is, and by the cover, trial and guarantee terms, because gel slows the warm-up under you rather than cooling the bed outright.

Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper

The Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper is the gel topper we would put on most UK beds. Its 5cm of HydroFoam carries heat-sensitive micro gel capsules in dense memory foam that Panda rates at 80kg/m³, so it softens a firm mattress without letting your hips sink through to it.

That dense foam carries a ten-year guarantee, the longest on this page, and at £139.95 for a double the Panda still costs less than most of the field. Panda sells the same topper in nine UK and EU sizes, more than any other pick here.

If the bamboo cover is what draws you, our bamboo mattress toppers comparison sets it against other bamboo-covered designs.

Pros
  • Micro gel capsules in 80kg/m³ foam
  • Ten-year guarantee
  • Nine UK and EU sizes
Cons
  • 30-night trial on direct orders only
  • Foam itself is wipe-clean only

Luff Prestige Bamboo Mattress Topper

If you have never slept on memory foam and want room to change your mind, the Luff Prestige is the safer buy. Luff gives you 100 nights to return it for any reason and backs it with a five-year warranty.

Under the bamboo cover sits 5cm of gel-infused CloudTec memory foam on a mesh base Luff calls Max-Airflow. Luff publishes no foam density, so how long the foam keeps its shape is harder to judge than on the Panda. A double costs £159.99 at full price, and it was on offer when we checked in October 2026.

Pros
  • 100-night trial, any reason
  • Five-year warranty
  • Mesh base lets air out underneath
Cons
  • No foam density published
  • King and super king are 2cm oversize

Origin Contour Mattress Topper
Origin Contour Mattress TopperOrigin Contour Mattress TopperOrigin Contour Mattress Topper
Best pressure relief

Origin Contour Mattress Topper

The Origin Contour suits a side sleeper whose mattress pushes back too hard at the shoulder. Its 5cm contour memory foam is studded with cooling gel-infused beads and wrapped in a removable Tencel cover, and Origin pitches it squarely at pressure relief.

Origin's next working day delivery, for orders placed before 9am on most of the UK mainland, suits anyone who wants the change this week. The price is the highest of the three 5cm picks at the top of this list, £195 for a double, with 30 days of free returns and a three-year warranty.

Pros
  • Gel-infused beads through the foam
  • Contour foam aimed at pressure points
  • Next working day delivery if ordered by 9am

Dunelm Gel Fusion Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Best for trying before buying

Dunelm Gel Fusion Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Dunelm keeps feeler samples of the Gel Fusion foam in its stores, so you can press it before you pay. The memory foam is infused with gel particles and punched with ventilation holes, and you choose between 6cm and 10cm.

There is no sleep trial, only Dunelm's standard returns for unused items, which makes that store visit worth the trip. At the time of writing (October 2026) the double was out of stock in both depths, while the single, king and super king were available, a 6cm king at £170. This Dunelm gel topper also heads our ranking of Dunelm's whole topper range.

Pros
  • Feeler samples in Dunelm stores
  • 6cm or 10cm depth
  • Ventilation holes through the foam
Cons
  • No sleep trial, unused returns only
  • Needs 24 hours' airing after unpacking

Best for warm sleepers

WELLPUR BOKSELVI Cooling Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Warm sleepers get two cooling routes in one with the WELLPUR BOKSELVI, sold only at JYSK. Its 8cm build puts 35mm of gel memory foam (45kg/m³) over 45mm of firmer polyether foam, and the cover is knitted with polyethylene fibre that JYSK says draws heat away the moment you lie down.

The regular price is steep for a store's own label at £299.99 for a double, and JYSK was charging that in full when we checked in October 2026.

Pros
  • 35mm gel foam over 45mm support foam
  • Cool-touch polyethylene cover
  • Returns accepted in any JYSK store
Cons
  • High regular price for an own label
  • Heavy at 9.3kg in a double

Best British-made

TheraPur ActiGel Cool Mattress Topper

Made in the UK for Dreams, the TheraPur ActiGel Cool is the thinnest topper here at 4cm, with zoned gel foam under a moisture-wicking polyester cover. Choose it to freshen a mattress that is nearly right.

Dreams' 100-night comfort guarantee applies to its mattresses, not to this topper, whose own guarantee lasts one year, the shortest of the seven. A double is £180.

Pros
  • Zoned ActiGel gel foam
  • Made in the UK
  • Straps fit mattresses up to 32cm deep
Cons
  • One-year guarantee
  • Too thin for a very hard mattress

Inofia Cooler Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Inofia Cooler Gel Memory Foam Mattress TopperInofia Cooler Gel Memory Foam Mattress TopperInofia Cooler Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper
Best for softening a hard bed

Inofia Cooler Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A mattress that feels like a board needs more than 5cm, and the Inofia Cooler Gel brings 8cm, or 10cm in a double or king. The build is 2cm of GELEX gel memory foam over 6cm of supportive Reliefoam, so the gel sits in the top layer where your body heat reaches it first.

Only 2cm of the 8cm is gel foam, which makes this a depth pick more than a cooling one. Inofia gives a 100-night trial but states no warranty for the topper, and an 8cm double lists at £187.77.

Our 10cm mattress toppers page weighs the 10cm version against other deep designs.

Pros
  • 8cm, or 10cm in double and king
  • Gel layer on top, support foam below
  • 100-night trial
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam
Cons
  • No warranty stated for the topper
  • Inofia warns the foam stiffens in the cold

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy a gel topper for how the foam feels and treat the gel as a bonus that takes the edge off memory foam's warmth in the first hours of the night. If you sleep truly hot, a breathable cover and a cooler bedroom will do more than any amount of gel.”

How the gel is built in

“Gel” on a topper label covers different constructions, and the difference decides how much of it you actually lie on. The most common is gel-infused memory foam, where gel particles or tiny capsules are mixed through the foam as it is made. Panda’s HydroFoam, Luff’s CloudTec and Dunelm’s Gel Fusion work this way, and Origin uses gel-infused beads. The second puts the gel in one layer only, a gel memory foam top over plain support foam, which is how Inofia and JYSK build their 8cm toppers. A moulded gel grid of soft polymer is a third type, but none of the toppers we found in UK sizes uses one.

Spread through 5cm of foam, the gel works across the whole depth but is diluted. Concentrated in a top layer, it meets your body heat first and the support foam below does the holding up.

What gel can and cannot do for heat

Gel works by heat capacity. It takes in warmth before its own temperature climbs, so the surface under you warms more slowly. A sleep-laboratory trial in Physiology & Behavior (Kräuchi et al., 2018) compared a high heat capacity mattress with a conventional one in 15 healthy young men; the high-capacity surface delayed the rise in mattress surface temperature, with a maximum difference of 6.12°C, and increased slow-wave sleep by 16%. A double-blind study of 32 middle-aged men in the journal Sleep (Herberger et al., 2020) found more deep N3 sleep and a slower heart rate on the high heat capacity mattress.

Neither study tested a gel topper, so read them as the principle gel relies on rather than proof for any product here. Once the gel has absorbed what it can, a gel topper sleeps much like ordinary memory foam, which is why Panda states on its product page that its topper “is not actively cooling”.

The bedroom still does most of the work. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom at around 16-18°C and explains on its advice page for hot nights: “Your body temperature needs to lower slightly before you go to sleep which is why it can be difficult to drop off when you’re too hot.” A gel topper helps at the margin of that.

Cooling gel mattress toppers

Gel toppers are sold on keeping you cooler, and that claim rests on the heat capacity of the gel and on the cover and airflow around it. Our temperature scores follow that build more than the gel itself. The WELLPUR BOKSELVI, with a 3.5cm gel memory foam layer under a polyethylene cooling cover, and the TheraPur ActiGel Cool, zoned gel foam in a wicking polyester cover, both score 8.0 out of 10. The Origin Contour (7.5), the Dunelm Gel Fusion (7.4) with its ventilation holes, the Inofia Cooler Gel (7.3) and the Panda Bamboo (7.2) follow, and the Luff Prestige comes last at 6.8.

A separate gel layer is no guarantee on its own, since the Inofia puts 2cm of gel foam on top and scores below the BOKSELVI. If staying cool is the main reason you are buying, start with the BOKSELVI or the TheraPur, both gel bed toppers with a cover made to move heat or moisture. The Panda ranks first for its dense foam, washable cover and ten-year guarantee rather than for heat.

Depth, density and feel

Choose the depth for the mattress underneath. A 4cm or 5cm gel topper softens a mattress that is firm but still flat; 8 to 10cm suits one that feels hard at the shoulder and hip. Density, where it is published, tells you how much foam you are paying for: Panda quotes 80kg/m³ for its HydroFoam and JYSK 45kg/m³ for the gel layer in BOKSELVI, while most makers give no figure. Our memory foam mattress toppers comparison covers depth in more detail for toppers without gel.

Covers, certification and returns

The foam in a gel topper cannot go in a washing machine, so the removable cover is what keeps it clean. Panda and Dunelm use foam certified under the European CertiPUR scheme, whose label is granted after independent laboratory tests, is valid for three years and is checked with control tests every year. Inofia’s foam carries the separate American CertiPUR-US mark, which requires low VOC emissions of less than 0.5 parts per million. Returns differ more than anything else on this page, because once a topper has been slept on you can usually send it back only within a trial.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked these toppers on what the gel actually does for the person lying on it. Every pick had to have gel in its comfort foam, confirmed on the seller’s own UK page, and be on sale in UK sizes when we checked prices and stock on 4 October 2026. Toppers that rely on graphite, springs, wool or a cool-touch fabric without any gel are ranked on our cooling mattress toppers comparison instead.

What the score weighs

Each pick carries our overall score out of 10, weighted about 30% comfort, 25% support, 15% temperature and 30% value. On a gel page the temperature score reads how the gel is built in (particles or capsules through the foam, or a separate gel layer), how many centimetres of gel foam sit under you, and whether the cover helps or works against it. Comfort and support read the depth, the foam density where the maker publishes it, and any zoning. Value sets the regular price of a double against the trial, the returns route and the guarantee.

None of these brands publishes a temperature measurement for its own topper. We quote each maker’s cooling claims as theirs and judge the construction behind them. Where two scores sit level, the longer trial and guarantee decide the order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gel mattress topper in the UK?

The Panda Bamboo Mattress Topper is our pick for most UK beds, with 5cm of memory foam carrying micro gel capsules, a washable bamboo cover and a ten-year guarantee. A double costs £139.95.

Does a gel mattress topper keep you cool all night?

No. Gel soaks up body heat until it is saturated, so its effect is strongest soon after you get into bed and fades as the night goes on. In a laboratory study of a high heat capacity mattress (Kräuchi et al., 2018), the surface stayed up to 6.12°C cooler than a conventional mattress while both warmed, but no topper maker in this ranking has published its own measurement.

What is the difference between gel-infused memory foam and a gel memory foam layer?

Gel-infused memory foam has gel particles, capsules or beads mixed through the whole foam, as in the Panda, Luff, Origin and Dunelm toppers. A gel memory foam layer is a separate slab laid over plain support foam, as in the 8cm Inofia (2cm of gel foam) and WELLPUR BOKSELVI (35mm).

Is a gel mattress protector the same as a gel topper?

No. A gel or cooling mattress protector is a thin cover that guards the mattress against spills and sweat and barely changes how the bed feels, while a gel topper adds 4 to 10cm of foam that does. Our mattress protectors comparison covers the protector side.

How thick should a gel mattress topper be?

Choose 5cm to soften a mattress that is firm but still flat, and 8 to 10cm for one that feels hard at the shoulders and hips. A 4cm topper such as the TheraPur ActiGel Cool only freshens the surface.

Can you wash a gel mattress topper?

Only the cover goes in the washing machine, at 30°C to 40°C on the toppers in this ranking, and Panda for one says its HydroFoam is wipe-clean only.

Do gel memory foam toppers smell when new?

Often, yes. New memory foam can give off a slight smell after unrolling, and Dunelm advises airing its Gel Fusion topper for 24 hours, after which the odour disperses in use.
