Starlight Beds 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper reviewed

The Starlight Beds 7.5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper is the deepest version of Starlight’s UK-made memory foam topper, sold direct from £64.99 for a single and £94.99 for a double. It is built for one job: making a mattress that feels too hard noticeably softer without replacing it.

What is inside

According to Starlight’s product page, the topper is a single 7.5cm layer of memory foam in a removable Pisa fabric zip cover that can go in the washing machine at a low temperature. An anti-slip base and corner straps hold it in place, and it arrives vacuum-packed and rolled. Starlight says it is made in the UK and complies with BS 7177:2008, the British standard for the ignition resistance of mattresses and divans, at domestic level. Starlight does not publish the foam’s density, the usual guide to how long memory foam keeps its shape.

How soft it feels

We rate it soft, 3 out of 10. Memory foam warms and gives under the shoulder and hip, and at 7.5cm there is enough of it for a side sleeper to sink in before reaching the mattress below. That is half as much foam again as the 5cm version, and well past the minimum depth that Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site, gives for a topper you will notice: “at least 5 cm (2 inches) deep”.

Back sleepers get a cushioned surface while the mattress underneath still does the supporting. Front sleepers are the exception, because this much foam lets the hips sink and arches the lower back. Like most memory foam, it also holds more body heat than a fibre or latex topper, so a warm sleeper may notice it on summer nights.

The same topper is sold in 2.5cm and 5cm depths for less. Starlight offers no sleep trial and states no guarantee for it, so measure your mattress and check the size before you order.
