The Devon Duvets 100% British Wool Mattress Topper is a handmade wool topper about 5cm deep, stitched in Devon from traceable British wool inside a brushed cotton casing, priced from £160 for a single. It contains no synthetic fibres, glues or bonding agents, and it carries a five-year maker’s guarantee.

How it is made

According to the Devon Duvets product page, the filling is 100% British wool certified by British Wool, and the 100% brushed cotton casing is woven in a mill that Devon Duvets says is OEKO-TEX certified. Elasticated corner straps are fitted from single size upwards. Each topper is individually handcrafted by the firm’s seamstresses in Devon. British Wool’s maker profile describes the method as a layer of cotton, wool layers cut to size and a second layer of cotton, then stitched, bound and finished by hand, and traces the business to the Dartmoor smallholding its founders moved to in 2008.

The quoted 5cm is loft, not a fixed height. Devon Duvets explains that the wool compresses when you lie on it and that the bound edges sit lower than the fuller centre, so the topper adds a soft layer of wool rather than 5cm of extra mattress height.

Care, allergies and the guarantee

A topper this full of wool cannot be washed. Devon Duvets says spot clean only, with a damp cloth, and rules out both machine washing and dry cleaning. Instead, you turn the topper regularly, top to bottom and side to side, and hang it outdoors to air. The maker says wool resists dust mites. For a mite allergy, the leaflet from Cambridge University Hospitals calls barrier covers “the single most effective measure”, and a spot-clean-only topper is exactly the kind of bedding that belongs under one.

On temperature, the evidence is modest. A 2016 study in Nature and Science of Sleep found that wool sleepwear helped 17 young adults fall asleep faster than cotton at 17°C, but it found no effect of wool bedding. Devon Duvets offers no sleep trial and accepts returns only if the topper is unused and in its original packaging within 14 days; the five-year guarantee covers faults. For a firm mattress and a buyer who wants natural materials, UK manufacture and a long guarantee, the Devon Duvets topper covers all three, with a guarantee two and a half times as long as the two years on the John Lewis wool topper. It is too soft to fix a sagging mattress, and at regular prices a single costs almost twice as much as the John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Devon Duvets topper is the one to buy if you want a British-made, entirely natural layer on a firm mattress and value a five-year guarantee. It will not rescue a sagging mattress, and it asks for regular turning and airing in place of a wash.”
