Wool’s main claim is temperature and moisture control, and the evidence for wool bedding specifically is thin. In a 2016 University of Sydney study in Nature and Science of Sleep, 17 healthy adults slept in a laboratory at 17°C and 22°C with wool or polyester bedding and wool or cotton sleepwear. Wool sleepwear shortened the time taken to fall asleep, but the researchers found no effect of the bedding type on sleep. The study was co-authored by the wool industry body Australian Wool Innovation.
Room temperature mattered more in that study, where participants slept better at 17°C than at 22°C. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom temperature at around 16-18°C and says temperatures over 24°C are likely to cause restlessness. A wool topper is a breathable surface in that range; it will not cool a hot room.
We rate the Fogarty Unbleached Wool topper medium, 5 out of 10. A wool fill feels denser and flatter than fibre or feather, so it changes the surface of the bed more than its softness. Buy it for a natural, washable layer between you and the mattress, not to rescue a hard one. Wool can felt and shrink if it is washed too hot or agitated too hard, so follow the programme on the sewn-in care label exactly. The filling is wool, so it is unsuitable if you avoid animal products, and there is no sleep trial beyond Dunelm’s 28-day return on unused items.
“Choose the Fogarty Unbleached Wool topper if you want a natural, washable layer in a 233 thread count cotton cover and are not trying to make a hard mattress much softer. It is the wrong buy if you avoid animal products or need real pressure relief, and it pays to check the size in your basket, because Dunelm's listing has mixed up its single and double options.”Go to shop →
