Woolroom Ryeland Thick Wool Mattress Topper reviewed

The Woolroom Ryeland Thick Wool Mattress Topper is a 10cm topper that combines 2,950gsm of traceable British wool with a core of about 2,000 pocketed microcoils in a king size. It is tufted rather than quilted, hand-crafted in the United Kingdom and backed by a 15-year warranty, with a 30-night sleep trial.

Layer by layer

Woolroom states 2,950gsm of wool for the Ryeland, against 1,500gsm in its Woolly Sprung and 1,000gsm in its Deluxe topper. By our calculation that is roughly 8.9kg of wool across the 3 square metres of a UK king, spread through every wool layer rather than the surface alone. The tufts hold the wool in pockets instead of stitched channels, which Woolroom says lets it keep its loft. Woolroom’s own Wool ID scheme links the wool to the farm, and British Wool, which grades and sells its members’ fleece, says it can trace every bale back to the farm.

Prices, trial and lead time

The table shows Woolroom’s regular prices. On 28 September 2026 the product page showed a 25% sale on every size with no end date. Each Ryeland is made to order: the page says hand-crafted in 6 to 7 weeks, and its delivery section says premium toppers ship within 7 to 8 weeks. Standard delivery is free on UK orders over £100.

Who it suits

Woolroom aims the Ryeland at mattresses that feel too firm or have lost some comfort. At 10cm it is twice the 5cm minimum that Bed Advice UK suggests for a topper to make a noticeable difference, and the microcoils give it more spring than a wool pad of similar depth. It is not a cure for a sagging mattress, since the same guide warns that a topper on a mattress with deep dips will quickly mould to them. Care is limited to spot cleaning with a damp cloth and a little wool detergent, because the topper cannot be machine washed, dry cleaned or tumble dried, so a protector on top is worth budgeting for.
