Naturalmat Frome Topper reviewed

The Naturalmat Frome is a 2.5cm topper made from two layers of organic British wool in an organic cotton and wool cover, the thinnest and cheapest topper Naturalmat makes. It is designed to hide the join on a zip-and-link bed or add a breathable layer to a mattress that makes you hot, and at the time of writing (September 2026) it costs £340 in a single and £420 in a Naturalmat double (137 x 190cm).

What a wool topper this thin can and cannot do

At 2.5cm the Frome will not make a hard mattress soft or a soft one supportive; it changes the surface you lie on rather than the support underneath. Its real jobs are the two Naturalmat names. On a zip-and-link bed it covers the ridge where two halves meet, and on a foam mattress that traps heat it puts a layer of wool between you and the foam.

How much cooler that makes you is less certain than wool marketing suggests. In a sleep-lab study of 17 adults at the University of Sydney, published in Nature and Science of Sleep (Shin et al., 2016), wool sleepwear helped people fall asleep faster than cotton, but switching the bedding from polyester to wool made no measurable difference to sleep. What wool does reliably is absorb moisture, so expect a drier surface on a warm night rather than a cold one.

The firmness figures are our assessment from the build, since Naturalmat does not grade its toppers. The Frome is the one to buy for the surface and the join; for comfort, the latex models do more.

Made to measure adds £50. Toppers are not covered by Naturalmat's 45-day Sleep Promise; instead the standard returns policy gives you 14 days to return or exchange, with return postage paid by you unless the topper is faulty.
