Best John Lewis mattress toppers

A John Lewis mattress topper can be anything from a washable fibre pad to British wool, duck down or zoned foam, because the department store makes its own version of almost every type of bed topper. The right one depends on what your mattress lacks, whether you need to machine-wash the topper, how deep a mattress it must fit and what it costs in your UK size. We rank the toppers John Lewis makes under its own name and list the other brands it stocks separately, with their John Lewis prices.

Best overall

John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch Washable Dual Layer Mattress Topper

Most John Lewis shoppers should start with the Synthetic Soft Touch Washable Dual Layer, the best-reviewed topper in the range with an average of 4.7 out of 5 from 1,501 customer reviews on johnlewis.com. Its upper layer unzips from a base that stays strapped to the mattress, so the part you lie on goes in a large-capacity machine at 40°C without stripping the whole 5cm topper off the bed.

At £105 for a double it costs only a little more than the wool topper below, and being able to wash it at home makes it the safest choice for most beds. It is also one of only two John Lewis toppers made in a small double.

Pros
  • Top layer unzips for a 40°C wash
  • Base layer stays on the bed
  • Five sizes, including small double
Cons
  • Polyester fill, no natural fibres
  • Fits mattresses only up to 32cm
  • Needs a large-capacity machine

Best British wool option

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper

If you would rather sleep on a natural filling, the Natural Collection British Wool topper is handcrafted in Lancashire from 100% British wool and costs £95 in a double, a little less than the washable Soft Touch. Its 233 thread count cotton cover fits mattresses up to 36cm deep.

The catch is care, because it can only be sponged or dry cleaned. Our wool mattress topper comparison sets it against thicker specialist wool toppers.

Pros
  • 100% British wool filling
  • Handcrafted in Lancashire
  • 233 thread count cotton cover
  • Fits mattresses up to 36cm deep
Cons
  • Sponge or dry clean only
  • Not for use with an electric blanket

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Fleece Mattress Topper
Best slim wool layer

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Fleece Mattress Topper

Think of the British Wool Fleece as a wool surface rather than a cushion. About 1cm deep, it puts a 100% wool top on a polyester knit backing and is made in Lancashire, so it changes the surface you lie on far more than the softness of the bed.

Its elasticated band fits mattresses up to 38cm deep, the second-deepest fit on this page, and a double is £135. For a noticeably softer bed, the thicker wool topper above costs less in every size.

Pros
  • Wool pile surface, made in Lancashire
  • Fits mattresses up to 38cm deep
  • Light, at 2.2kg in super king
Cons
  • About 1cm, adds little cushioning
  • Not reversible

John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper
Best for a soft, lofty feel

John Lewis Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper

For a soft, hotel-style bed, the Muscovy Duck Down Dual Layer is the most down-rich topper John Lewis makes, with 95% Muscovy duck down in the top layer over a 100% duck feather base. John Lewis says it is Nomite certified as suitable for dust allergy sufferers.

That down comes at £240 for a double, the most of any feather topper on this page, so buy it when softness matters more to you than price or easy care.

Pros
  • 95% Muscovy down top layer
  • 320 thread count cotton cover
  • RDS-certified down
Cons
  • Priciest feather topper here
  • Down needs regular shaking out

John Lewis Specialist Support 5-Zone Aurora Foam Mattress Topper

Best zoned support

John Lewis Specialist Support 5-Zone Aurora Foam Mattress Topper

When a mattress feels uneven or a little too soft, the 5-Zone Aurora is the John Lewis topper that firms up the surface instead of padding it. Its Aurora foam is cut into five zones, it is reversible, and the removable cover washes at 40°C. John Lewis says the foam lets more air through than memory foam.

At £159 for a double it costs little more than half the price of the memory foam Ultimate below, and it springs back faster, which suits people who turn over a lot.

Pros
  • Five support zones in Aurora foam
  • Reversible profiled surface
  • Removable cover washes at 40°C
  • Made in the UK
Cons
  • Single and king sold out online
  • No memory foam contouring

John Lewis Specialist Support Ultimate Dual Layer Topper

Best memory foam option

John Lewis Specialist Support Ultimate Dual Layer Topper

For side sleepers who want pressure relief at the shoulder and hip, the Specialist Support Ultimate Dual Layer is the John Lewis memory foam topper to choose. It puts temperature-sensitive memory foam in a Podz Mini pattern under a fibre-filled cover, 4.5cm deep in total, and John Lewis lists the whole topper as machine washable at 40°C.

At £289 for a double it costs more than any other topper here bar the wool enhancer. Our memory foam topper comparison covers deeper foam toppers from other brands.

Pros
  • Memory foam under a quilted fibre cover
  • Whole topper machine washable
  • Pods move independently
Cons
  • King out of stock online
  • Second-highest price on this page

John Lewis British Natural Collection Wool Mattress Enhancer

Best luxury upgrade

John Lewis British Natural Collection Wool Mattress Enhancer

At £1,099 for a double, the British Natural Collection Wool Mattress Enhancer is priced like a mattress, and it behaves more like one than any topper here. Handmade in Yorkshire, it is 13cm of hemp, flax and British wool fillings around British steel springs, with a seven-year guarantee and nine sizes up to emperor.

It is only worth it on a mattress that still supports you well.

Pros
  • 13cm of wool, hemp and flax
  • British steel springs inside
  • Seven-year guarantee
  • Nine sizes, up to emperor
Cons
  • Costs more than many mattresses
  • Arrives rolled, needs airing first

John Lewis EasyCare Mattress Topper
Best budget pick

John Lewis EasyCare Mattress Topper

Budget buyers get the most for the least with the EasyCare, which costs £50 for a double and is the cheapest John Lewis topper still sold in all four main sizes. It goes in the washing machine at 40°C and the tumble dryer on low, and its band fits mattresses up to 42cm deep, the deepest fit in the range.

John Lewis states no guarantee for it, and the polyester pad adds softness rather than support.

Pros
  • Lowest price in all four sizes
  • Fits mattresses up to 42cm deep
  • Machine wash and tumble dry
Cons
  • No guarantee stated
  • Soft layer, little support

John Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper
John Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress TopperJohn Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress TopperJohn Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper
Best for a long guarantee

John Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper

John Lewis marks the Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer as a bestseller, and its five-year guarantee is the longest of any topper here except the wool enhancer. A top layer of 50% duck down and 50% duck feather sits over a firmer all-feather base, for £135 in a double.

It ranks last because feather fill flattens overnight and needs regular shaking, and it trails the wool and foam toppers above on support and temperature.

Pros
  • Five-year guarantee
  • 50/50 down and feather top layer
  • Firmer all-feather base layer
  • Fits mattresses up to 35cm deep
Cons
  • Spot clean only
  • Less loft than the Muscovy down topper

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Decide first whether you need to wash your topper, because that one question splits the John Lewis range in two. If you do, buy the Soft Touch dual layer, and if you would rather sleep on wool or down, accept that it will only ever be aired, sponged or dry cleaned.”

Washable or not

John Lewis toppers fall into two groups. The synthetic ones can go in the washing machine at 40°C, meaning the Soft Touch Dual Layer and EasyCare (polyester fibre) and the Specialist Support Ultimate (memory foam and fibre), while the 5-Zone Aurora foam topper has a removable cover that can. The wool, feather and down toppers and the wool enhancer can only be sponged, spot cleaned or dry cleaned, so they need a washable mattress protector over them.

A 40°C wash freshens a topper but does not deal with dust mites. Allergy UK advises that “Washing at 60 degrees centigrade or above will kill mites. House dust mite allergen dissolves in water so washing at lower temperatures will wash the allergen away temporarily, but the mites will survive and produce more allergen after a while.” None of the toppers on this page is rated for a 60°C wash, so if you have a mite allergy, the charity’s other advice matters more, which is an allergen-proof barrier cover that fully encloses the mattress.

What each filling changes

Polyester fibre adds softness and is the easiest to look after. Wool adds a natural layer that John Lewis says regulates temperature, although the research is thinner than the marketing. In a 2016 sleep laboratory study in Nature and Science of Sleep, Shin et al. put 17 young adults through nine nights of testing and found no effect on sleep from wool rather than polyester bedding, even though wool sleepwear helped them fall asleep faster. The study was co-authored by the wool industry body Australian Wool Innovation.

Feather and down toppers are the softest and loftiest. Both John Lewis feather toppers here use fill certified to the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange says prohibits force-feeding and live-plucking of waterfowl. Foam is the only filling that adds support. The 5-Zone Aurora firms up an uneven surface, while the memory foam in the Ultimate Dual Layer moulds to the shoulder and hip.

Size, depth and fit

Every topper here comes in the four main UK sizes, single (90x190), double (135x190), king (150x200) and super king (180x200). Only the Soft Touch and the wool enhancer are also made in a small double (120x190), and only the enhancer goes up to an emperor (200x200). Check your mattress depth before ordering, because the stated fits run from 32cm to 42cm and a topper whose straps are too short will slide or pull at the corners, which is the usual problem on pillow-top and deep hybrid mattresses. For more choice in one size, see our double mattress toppers and king size mattress toppers comparisons.

Returns, guarantees and what a topper cannot do

John Lewis applies a hygiene restriction to its toppers, so unless one is faulty it only takes it back unopened, unused and with the seals intact. None comes with a sleep trial. Guarantees run from none stated on the EasyCare to seven years on the wool enhancer, and standard delivery was free on orders over £50 and £4.50 below that at the time of writing (October 2026).

A topper also has limits. It can soften a firm mattress or even out a slightly uneven one, but it cannot restore support to a mattress that sags. The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, by which point it has clocked up around 20,000 hours of use, as Furniture News reported. If yours is older than that, a new mattress is the better spend.

Methodology

How we rate

We compared every mattress topper John Lewis sells under its own name and ranked nine of them. Five more were left out. The Specialist Support 3-Zone Memory Foam was in stock only in super king, the Active Anti-Allergy and Synthetic Soft and Light were being cleared in two sizes, and the Clusterfibre Single Layer and Natural Duck Feather and Down overlap with better-rated picks of the same filling. Prices, sizes, stock, fillings, care labels, guarantees and mattress-depth fits come from each johnlewis.com product page, read on 4 October 2026 at regular prices.

Each topper carries our score out of 10, weighted 30% comfort, 25% support, 15% temperature and 30% value. For this range, comfort follows filling and loft, support rewards foam and zoning over loose fibre, temperature favours wool and cotton over polyester and memory foam, and value sets the double price against the guarantee and how easily the topper can be cleaned. Where a topper had enough John Lewis customer reviews to mean something, they informed the comfort judgement. Washing claims are judged against the 60°C wash needed to kill dust mites, explained in the buying guide. The order follows our scores, and where scores tie, the topper in stock in more sizes ranks higher, then the one with the cheaper double.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which John Lewis mattress topper is best?

The John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch Washable Dual Layer is the best John Lewis mattress topper for most people, a 5cm polyester topper whose upper layer unzips for a 40°C wash and which averages 4.7 out of 5 from 1,501 customer reviews. A double costs £105. If you want a natural filling instead, the Natural Collection British Wool topper is £95 in a double.

Are John Lewis mattress toppers washable?

Only the synthetic ones go in the washing machine, meaning polyester fibre and foam. The Soft Touch Dual Layer, EasyCare and Specialist Support Ultimate wash at 40°C and the 5-Zone Aurora has a 40°C removable cover, while the wool, feather and down toppers are spot clean, sponge clean or dry clean only.

What is the best John Lewis memory foam mattress topper?

The Specialist Support Ultimate Dual Layer is the John Lewis memory foam topper to buy, 4.5cm deep with memory foam in a Podz Mini pattern under a fibre-filled cover, at £289 for a double. The cheaper 3-Zone Memory Foam topper was in stock only in super king on 4 October 2026. For firmer, zoned support without the sink of memory foam, the 5-Zone Aurora costs £159 in a double.

How much is a John Lewis double mattress topper?

A John Lewis double mattress topper costs between £50 for the EasyCare and £289 for the Specialist Support Ultimate at regular prices, with the British wool topper at £95. The 13cm wool mattress enhancer is a separate class at £1,099 for a double.

Does John Lewis sell king size mattress toppers?

Yes, every John Lewis topper ranked here is made in king size (150x200), from £55 for the EasyCare to £329 for the Specialist Support Ultimate, leaving aside the wool enhancer. The Ultimate and 5-Zone Aurora kings were out of stock online on 4 October 2026, so the dearest king you could order that day was the Muscovy Duck Down at £260.

Can you return a John Lewis mattress topper?

Only if it is unopened, unused and still sealed, unless it is faulty, because John Lewis applies a hygiene restriction to toppers. None of its own-brand toppers comes with a sleep trial, so check the filling, the depth and the mattress fit before you order.

What is the difference between a mattress topper, an enhancer and a mattress pad?

A topper adds a comfort layer, from about 1cm to 5cm deep in the John Lewis range, while the John Lewis wool mattress enhancer is a 13cm sprung layer that changes the feel of the bed almost as much as a new mattress. A mattress pad or protector is a thin, washable cover that keeps the mattress clean and adds little comfort, and Allergy UK recommends allergen-proof covers on all mattresses for people with a dust mite allergy.

Will a mattress topper fix an old mattress?

No, a topper softens or evens out a surface but cannot restore support to a mattress that sags. The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, after around 20,000 hours of use.
