John Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper reviewed

The John Lewis Duck Feather & Down Dual Layer Mattress Topper is a 5cm topper in two parts: a top layer of 50% duck down and 50% duck feather over a base of 100% duck feather, both inside a 100% cotton cover. John Lewis sells it in four UK sizes, from £115 for a single, and includes a five-year guarantee.

How the two layers are built

Under EN 12934, the European standard for labelling down and feather fillings, the percentages on a label are shares by weight. A 50/50 top layer sits below the 60% down share that the IDFL guide to European labelling standards gives for advertising a product as down under EN 13186, so this is fairly described as a feather and down topper. The top is softer than a single-layer topper filled with 85% feather, and less lofty than the 70% down layers of the dearer goose duals.

We checked prices on johnlewis.com on 28 September 2026, when all four sizes were in stock. Standard delivery is free on orders over £50 and costs £4.50 below that. The topper had 4.2 out of 5 from 16 customer reviews on the John Lewis site at the time.

Care, returns and sourcing

Care is the main drawback. John Lewis lists the topper as spot clean only, with no dry cleaning or tumble drying, so a washable protector on top does most of the hygiene work. Unless it is faulty, it can only be returned unopened, unused and with its seals intact, which rules out trying it on your bed first. John Lewis states that the fill is certified to the Responsible Down Standard, which Textile Exchange says prohibits live plucking and force-feeding, with every stage of the supply chain audited from the farm. The topper is made in China.

Any feather topper flattens with use, so plan to shake this one out every few days. At 5cm it meets the minimum depth that Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, suggests for a topper to make a noticeable difference.
