The Snuggledown Luxurious Extra Deep 10cm Mattress Topper is the deepest topper in Snuggledown’s Hotel collection, a box-quilted microfibre topper made in Lancashire and priced from £31.10 for a single. It adds a thick, soft layer to a firm mattress and carries a two-year quality guarantee, which few budget fibre toppers offer.

Construction

The Snuggledown product page lists a 100% microfibre filling inside a polyester cover with a satin stripe, box-quilted so the 10cm depth stays even across the surface, and strong elasticated straps. Snuggledown says it has made the range at its Lancashire home for over 25 years. The topper is sold as hypoallergenic and machine washable, but the page gives no maximum wash temperature, so check the sewn-in label before the first wash.

Microfibre is the budget material of the topper world, and loose fibre tends to drift and bunch under the body. The box quilting on the Extra Deep helps here, because it stops the fibre drifting to the sides, and an occasional shake brings back the loft.

Allergies and who it suits

The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis suggests synthetic bedding and covers, washed regularly at 60C and above, to keep house dust mites down. The Extra Deep meets the synthetic half of that advice. With no published wash temperature, allergy sufferers are safer keeping it under a washable protector.

Snuggledown also sells toppers 2.5cm and 5cm deep. Pick the 10cm if your mattress feels hard rather than merely firm, and if you sleep on your side. It will not add support, and like any deep fibre topper it will compress where your hips and shoulders rest, so it is a poor choice for back pain or a mattress that has already started to sag.
