The Simba Hybrid Essential Mattress Topper is a 6.5cm, four-layer topper with up to 1,500 Aerocoil microsprings between Simbatex foam and a high-density foam base. It is the cheaper of Simba’s two spring toppers, rated medium-firm (6 out of 10 on our scale), with a regular price from £249 for a single.

What is inside the Essential Topper?

Layer Material What it does
1. Cover Soft knitted cover Removes for washing at 40°C
2. Comfort Simbatex open-structure CertiPUR foam Cushioning with airflow
3. Springs Up to 1,500 20mm Aerocoil springs in polyester pockets Responsive support
4. Base High-resilience, high-density CertiPUR foam with slip-limiting base and elastic straps Stability and a secure fit

The layers are listed on Simba’s UK product page. Compared with the Hybrid Topper it has 400 fewer springs and a less plush cover; the depth and layer count are the same.

When does a topper make sense?

A topper changes the feel of a sound mattress; it does not rescue a worn-out one. In a National Bed Federation survey of 500 recent bed buyers, 41% were replacing their old mattress within five years or less, and a third gave “worn out” as a reason (survey of November 2021). If your mattress has a dip you can see, spend the money on a new one. If it is merely too firm, or you want a guest bed to feel better, a medium-firm topper like this is the cheaper fix, and medium-firm is the band a systematic review in Sleep Health (Radwan et al., 2015) found best for comfort and spinal alignment.

How does it compare with the Cool Foam Topper?

Simba’s third topper, the Cool Foam, drops the springs for a contoured foam base and costs 40% less in a single. It is the better choice for warm sleepers on a budget; the Essential Topper’s springs make it more responsive and better at keeping you on top of the surface rather than in it, which heavier sleepers and combination sleepers who turn often will notice.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Hybrid Essential Topper is the better buy of Simba's two spring toppers for most people, costing 17% less than the Hybrid Topper in a single for the same four-layer design. Pay more only if you want the plusher cover and 400 extra springs.”
