“Measure your bed before you pick a foam, then buy the Travel Topper if one or two of its ready-made widths cover it, and save the made-to-measure order for island, French and other shaped beds that no rectangle covers.”
Measure the bed first
The right Duvalay topper depends more on the shape of your bed than on the foam. The ready-made Travel Toppers are all 190cm long, in widths of 58, 66 and 77cm, so a rectangular bed made from seat cushions is usually covered by one of them or two side by side. A VW rock and roll bed takes the dedicated VW topper. An island, French or transverse bed with curved or clipped corners needs a made-to-measure topper, because a rectangle either leaves gaps at the edges or hangs over the curve.
For a shaped bed, Duvalay’s measuring guide suggests working up the centre of an island bed and noting the width every 10cm until the curve straightens out, or sending a traced paper template. Duvalay cuts to a 1.5cm tolerance but does not measure for you, and the drawing you approve is final.
Gold, Silver or Freshtec
Duvalay makes three foams and offers all of them on its main toppers. Gold is its highest-density memory foam and the firmest, and it is the only one made at 2.5cm. Silver is a slightly softer, medium-firm memory foam that lets a shoulder and hip sink in. Freshtec is a softer, breathable foam with a cool-touch cover. The Sleep Charity describes the balance to aim for: “a mattress too soft will cause us to slouch, while one that’s too firm can apply pressure to our hips and shoulders.” Duvalay’s own advice follows the same logic, with Silver for side sleepers and aching joints and Gold for back sleepers.
Temperature matters more in a van than in a house. The same Sleep Charity page puts the ideal bedroom at around 16 to 18°C and says temperatures over 24°C are likely to cause restlessness, while a room of about 12°C makes it hard to drop off. A caravan or roof bed swings between both ends of that range far faster than a bedroom does. Memory foam moulds closely to the body, which some people find warm, so if you tend to overheat, Freshtec is the foam worth paying extra for. The NHS lists night sweats among the common symptoms of the menopause, and Duvalay says many of its Freshtec buyers are women going through it. Hot sleepers who want to look beyond Duvalay can compare our cooling mattress toppers.

2.5cm or 5cm
Depth is a trade between comfort and storage. On bench seats 5cm is the better choice, because it bridges the joins between cushions that you can still feel through 2.5cm. The thinner depth earns its place where space is tight, in pop tops, roof tents and small lockers, and it is light enough to carry under one arm. Neither depth will rescue a mattress that has sagged in the middle, since a topper changes how a bed feels rather than how it supports you.
Returns, delivery and the first night away
Duvalay offers no sleep trial. Ready-made toppers can be returned within 14 days if unused and still packed, at your own cost, while made-to-measure toppers cannot be returned once you approve Duvalay’s drawing, unless they are faulty. That is why we only recommend a custom topper when the bed shape genuinely needs one. Delivery is free over £100 to mainland UK, express delivery in two to three working days costs £14.99, and the Essentials range is excluded from Duvalay’s offers and discount codes.
The case for taking your own topper on every trip is partly comfort and partly familiarity. A Brown University study of 35 volunteers found that on the first night in a new place, one half of the brain stays more alert during deep sleep. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it,” said Yuka Sasaki, the study’s corresponding author. A topper will not switch that off, but sleeping on the same surface every trip is one thing you can keep constant. For home beds and other brands, our best mattress toppers guide covers the wider market, and our soft topper comparison focuses on softening a hard mattress.
