The Abaca Rhossili is a metal-free mattress built around a natural latex core, wrapped in two layers of organic wool and an organic cotton cover and handmade to order in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Abaca sells it direct, from £1,695 in a small single.

Construction

Layer Detail (Abaca)
Cover Organic cotton, hand-tufted
Upper wool layer Organic wool and mohair, 500g per square metre
Latex core Natural latex from the Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree, medium density
Lower wool layer Organic wool and mohair, 500g per square metre
Springs None, metal-free
Guarantee 10 years
Lead time 4 to 6 weeks, made to order

Abaca’s own page is inconsistent about the latex depth: its headline copy says 20cm of latex, while its product description describes a 12cm core between two 3cm pads, 18cm in total, and a construction drawing on the same page also shows 18cm. Either way it is a full latex core rather than a thin latex topping over springs, and Abaca gives the finished mattress as 20 to 21cm deep. The layered design gives what Abaca calls a firmer core with softer surfaces.

Organic, but check the certificate

Abaca describes the mattress as organic, and its history page says founder Rhiannon Rowley worked on a Soil Association pilot project for textile standards before launching the company in 2004. The Rhossili product page, however, names no certificate for the latex. The recognised mark is the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), developed by Control Union, which traces latex from certified organic plantations and sets limits for harmful substances and emissions. If a certified organic core matters to you, ask Abaca for the GOLS certificate before you order.

Feel and who it suits

Only the medium firmness is offered online, which Abaca recommends for sleepers up to 16 stone; we record it as 5 out of 10. Latex relieves pressure at the shoulder and hip while pushing back quickly, and Abaca notes that latex mattresses are often recommended for side sleepers; it also says its wool wicks moisture away from the body. Two caveats: NHS advice on allergic rhinitis lists latex among common allergy triggers, and without springs the edge tends to feel softer than on a pocket sprung mattress with reinforced sides.

Prices are from abacaorganic.co.uk at the time of writing (September 2026). Abaca’s sizes run slightly wider than the usual UK standard, for example 137cm rather than 135cm for a double, so measure your bed frame. Delivery to the UK mainland is free by a two-person team to the room of your choice, with charges for the Scottish Highlands and islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland. There is no sleep trial: if the mattress turns out too firm or too soft, Abaca will exchange it free of charge if you tell it within 14 days. The Abaca guarantee covers the Rhossili for 10 years against faulty workmanship or materials, and on slatted bases the gap between slats must not exceed 50mm.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Rhossili is for side sleepers and allergy-conscious buyers who want an all-latex, metal-free mattress with organic fillings and will pay for hand-making. Budget buyers and anyone who wants a long home trial should look elsewhere, since Abaca offers a 14-day comfort exchange rather than a trial.”
