The Hypnos Orthos Support 7 is a 28cm double-sided pocket sprung mattress sold in firm and extra firm tensions, and at £1,129 for a double at Bed Factory Direct it is the least expensive firm Hypnos in our comparisons. It is the middle model of the three-strong Orthos Support range and uses seven-turn ReActive pocket springs, not the ReActivePro units with Triple Edge Protection found in the Origins ranges.

According to the Hypnos specification, the springs sit under an eOlus support pad spun from recycled plastic bottles, generous layers of responsibly sourced cotton and British wool certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, a voluntary Textile Exchange standard that audits wool farms on animal welfare and land management. Hand tufting holds the fillings in place, two rows of hand side-stitching tie the border to the spring unit, and chrome vents let the fillings breathe. The sleep surface is unbleached cotton that Hypnos says is fire-resistant without flame-retardant chemicals.

Prices were checked in September 2026 and are the same for both tensions. Bed Factory Direct also sells zip and link king and super king versions, which we have not listed.

Firm is not automatically the right answer for a bad back. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), the group given medium-firm mattresses had better outcomes for pain in bed and for disability after 90 days than the group given firm ones. The Orthos Support 7 therefore makes most sense for people who already know they sleep well on a firm surface: back and front sleepers, and heavier sleepers who sink too far into softer comfort layers. We rate the firm tension at 7 out of 10, and the extra firm version sits above that.

Hypnos lists the king size at 37.5kg, against 40.3kg for a Wool Origins 6 king, which makes the seasonal turn a little less of a chore. Keep to it, because the Hypnos guarantee terms exclude mattresses that have not been turned or rotated as recommended, and mattresses used on slatted bases with gaps wider than 7.5cm. Bed Factory Direct builds it to order with free delivery in four to six weeks and lists no sleep trial, so lie on an Orthos in a showroom before you commit.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Orthos Support 7 is the Hypnos we would point firm-mattress fans towards, with 28cm of seven-turn springs, cotton and RWS wool that you turn with the seasons. Side sleepers and anyone buying for a sore lower back should start with a medium tension instead, because even the firm version gives little at the shoulder.”
