“Measure the bedroom and the stairs before you fall for a super king, then choose on motion transfer and firmness, because 90 cm each only helps if your partner's turning over stays on their side of the bed.”
A super king mattress is 180 cm wide and 200 cm long (6ft by 6ft 6in), 30 cm wider than a UK king and 45 cm wider than a standard double. Over the full length that is 40% more sleeping area than a double.
Why the extra width matters for couples
Partner movement is the problem a bigger bed addresses. In a Loughborough University study that tracked 46 couples for eight nights (Pankhurst and Horne, Sleep, 1994), 5 to 6% of all 30-second sleep epochs contained a movement, and about a third of those movements happened in the same epoch for both partners. A 2020 actigraphy study of 55 couples (Walters and colleagues, Sleep Health) found that on average 18.9% of a sleeper’s awakenings came immediately after the partner had been awake. The National Bed Federation’s advice site draws the practical conclusion in its UK bed size guide: “So with partner disturbance a major cause of poor sleep, buying a bigger bed should result in a better night’s sleep.” Its showroom check is simple. Lie on your backs with your hands behind your heads, and if your elbows do not touch, you have enough room.
Width is only half of it, because movement also travels through the mattress. Every pick here limits that spread with individually wrapped springs, a second tier of micro-springs or, in the TEMPUR PRO SmartCool, solid foam with no spring unit. Edges count for more on a super king as well, since a soft edge wastes width you paid for. That is where the steel spring base of the Simba Hybrid Pro and the reinforced sides of the Nectar Premier Hybrid and both Origin mattresses earn their places.
One firmness for two people, or two
The National Bed Federation’s buying advice says partners of widely differing size and weight, 3 stone (18 kg) or more apart, may need different mattresses, and adds that there is no industry-wide standard for comparing firmness ratings between makers. Some couples zip two singles together to form a super king so that each can choose a firmness. Check the length before you do. Two UK singles at 90x190 make 180x190, 10 cm short of a super king, so a split pair needs two 90x200 European singles, which OTTY and TEMPUR sell in the models ranked here. If you would rather share one mattress, Origin splits its range along this line, with the Origin Hybrid rated 6 to 7 out of 10 for back sleepers and the Hybrid Pro sold as medium-plush for side sleepers. The TEMPUR PRO SmartCool comes in four feels at the same super king price.
What the super king premium costs
Moving up from a double costs between 15% and 46% more across this ranking. The Simba Hybrid Pro has the smallest step and the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1400 Pocket Ortho the largest. Spread over the life of a mattress the gap shrinks. Bed Advice UK puts the cost of a bed at 3.9p a night for every £100 over seven years, which turns the £170 between an Emma Original double and super king into under 7p a night.

Room, stairs and bedding
Measure the bedroom with the frame and headboard in mind, not just the 180x200 mattress, and then think about the stairs. The makers list the super kings at 40.9 kg for the Emma Original Pro, 46 kg for the Origin Hybrid, 48.3 kg for the Origin Hybrid Pro and 53.9 kg for the Nectar Premier Hybrid, so none of them is a one-person carry. The 26 to 31 cm picks need deep fitted sheets, and a mattress protector or super king topper must match the size.
