The Emma Original is a 25 cm hybrid mattress, memory foam and soft foam over a five-zone pocket spring core, rated 4 out of 5 (medium firm) by Emma and sold from £369 in a UK single. We tested it at home. It is the safest all-round choice in Emma’s UK range, with one caveat for very light sleepers.

What is inside the Emma Original

Emma lists five layers under the zip-off cover on its Emma Original product page. Emma has since thickened the MemoryAdapt layer, which its FAQ says is now twice as thick, and wrapped the springs in a comfort foam edge. Our test sample dates from 2025, so read our findings on feel as a close guide to the current version rather than a measurement of it.

Layer Material What Emma says it does
1 Cover, 100% polyester Removable, machine washable at 40°C
2 MemoryAdapt memory foam Moulds to the body and spreads pressure
3 Airgocell soft foam First gentle give, open cells for airflow
4 SupportBase foam Firmer transition above the springs
5 Pocket springs, five zones Zoned support, foam edge for sitting near the side

How it felt in our test

Over several nights the Emma Original balanced a cushioned top against clear support underneath. We put it at 6 on our 1 to 10 firmness scale, in line with Emma’s own 4 out of 5. The memory foam gives as soon as you lie down without letting you sink far, and the pocket springs add enough bounce to make turning over easy. Testers with recurring lower back pain reported a clear improvement, and the five spring zones kept the middle of the bed from dipping.

That feel sits where the research points. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), people on a medium-firm mattress had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one, both for disability (odds ratio 2.10) and for pain while lying in bed (2.36).

Temperature, partners and the cover

We noticed no heat build-up over the test nights, even though the Original has no dedicated cooling layer; the open-cell Airgocell foam and the spring core leave room for air to move. Motion isolation was good in our test, and a partner turning over barely registered on the other side.

The cover unzips all the way round and kept its fit after a 40°C wash. Carry handles on the grey sides make a 25 cm mattress far easier to centre on the base or lift when you change the sheet.

Who the Emma Original suits

We recommend the Emma Original to back and side sleepers of average build and to couples who want a quiet bed. If you weigh under about 60 kg or want a soft, sinking feel, it may feel firm, and the 200-night trial gives you time to find out. Delivery is free in 2 to 7 working days and the guarantee runs for 10 years. Warm sleepers who want a dedicated cooling layer should compare the Emma Original Pro.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Emma Original is the Emma mattress we would recommend to most people: medium-firm, cool in our test and quiet for couples. Sleepers under about 60 kg who want a soft, sinking feel should use the 200-night trial or look at the softer Original Elite.”
