The Emma Original Elite is the softest mattress in Emma’s Original line: a 27 cm, seven-zone hybrid topped with an AirGrid polymer lattice rather than foam, rated 2 out of 5 (medium soft) by Emma and sold only in four UK sizes, from £749 for a single. Emma notes that it was previously called the Emma Hybrid AirGrid.

What is inside the Original Elite

Emma’s Original Elite product page lists seven layers including the cover and the grip base. AirGrid is a honeycomb of hyper-elastic polymer with open air channels, which gives under pressure points and springs back straight away.

Layer Material Role
Cover 64% polyester, 36% Tencel Moisture-wicking, removable, 40°C wash
AirGrid Hyper-elastic polymer lattice Pressure relief, passive cooling
Airgocell Point-elastic open-cell foam Airflow and cushioning
MemoryAdapt Memory foam Moulds to shoulders and hips
SupportBase High-density foam Transition to the springs
Core Pocket springs, seven zones Edge-to-edge zoned support

Feel and who it suits

At 2 out of 5 on Emma’s scale, 4 on our 1 to 10 scale, the Elite is built for side sleepers who want cushioning at the shoulders and hips with an instant rebound when they turn. Emma itself steers stomach sleepers and people who prefer a firmer surface towards the Original or Original Lite.

That advice lines up with the evidence. A 2026 review of 47 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology found medium-firm mattresses the most defensible general choice for non-specific low back pain, and said sleeping position and body build should shape the decision. If back pain is your main concern, the medium-firm Emma Original is the safer Emma pick.

Approvals and size tolerance

There is no legal size tolerance for mattresses in the UK, and the National Bed Federation describes plus or minus 20 mm on length and width as accepted industry practice, so allow for that if your frame is a tight fit. Emma’s FAQ also states that the Original Elite is approved by the NBF, and the product page carries a Good Housekeeping Institute Approved 2026 badge.

Delivery and format: what we saw with the Emma Original Pro

We tested the Emma Original Pro at home, which shares the Elite’s 27 cm depth, seven-zone spring unit and look from the outside. The top layer differs, AirGrid polymer on the Elite and graphite ThermoSync foam on the Pro, so we do not carry the comfort findings across. What does carry over is the format: the mattress arrives rolled in a box, needs a few hours to recover, and at 27 cm is best positioned by two people.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Original Elite is the side sleeper's choice in Emma's Original line, with a buoyant, open-structured surface that memory foam alone does not give. It is expensive and comes in only four UK sizes, and back or front sleepers who want firmer support are better off with the Original or Original Pro.”
