Comparison

Best small double mattresses

The best small double mattress for most UK buyers is a medium-firm model sold in the true 4ft size of 120x190cm, matched to your weight and sleeping position, with a home trial long enough to judge it. A small double is 15cm narrower than a standard double, so it suits a single adult who wants room to stretch, a teenager, a guest room or a box room far better than two adults every night. The ranking below weighs firmness, depth, trial terms and the price in the small double size itself, from budget guest-room mattresses to firm pocket sprung and hybrid options.

Best overall

Emma Original

The Emma Original is the small double we recommend to most buyers, a 25cm medium-firm hybrid with memory foam over a five-zone pocket spring core at £479 in 120x190. It arrived rolled in its box when we tested it, which helps in the box rooms and guest rooms where a 4ft bed usually goes, and the 200-night trial covers you if the feel is wrong.

Pros
  • Sold in the true 120x190 small double size
  • Arrived rolled in a box in our test
  • Medium-firm, the band clinical trials favour
  • 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee
Cons
  • Costs more than the Lite for an occasional guest bed
  • Can feel firm for sleepers under about 60kg

  • Pocket spring core, no memory foam
  • Wraparound foam edge for sitting on the side
  • 10-year guarantee

Highest score

Origin Hybrid

The Origin Hybrid has the highest overall score in this ranking and, at £356 in small double, costs less than the Emma Original while offering a 200-night trial and a 15-year warranty. It is a 26cm medium-firm hybrid, rated 6 to 7 out of 10 by Origin, with five-zone steel springs under a zip-off pillow top. It sits fourth only because ranks one to three are reserved for brands with affiliate programmes, so on specification and price alone it is the small double to beat.

Pros
  • Highest overall score on this page
  • 15-year warranty and 200-night trial
  • Zip-off top cover is machine washable
Cons
  • Old mattress removal costs £54 extra
  • Five spring zones, the Hybrid Pro has seven

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“A small double is generous for one sleeper and tight for two, at 60cm each. If a second person will sleep in it most nights, measure the room for a 4ft6 double before you buy.”

Who a small double suits, and when two is too many

A small double suits one adult, a teenager or a guest room best, and two adults only now and then. The National Bed Federation’s UK size guide sets it at 120 x 190cm (4ft x 6ft3in), 15cm narrower than a standard 135 x 190cm double. Shared between two, that leaves each sleeper 60cm, two-thirds of the width of a single mattress. The NBF, the trade body for UK and Irish bed makers, puts it plainly:

“Although two people can share a small double (120cm or 4ft wide) bed, we would only suggest this size as an occasional bed for two people.”

UK size Dimensions (cm) Imperial Width per person if two share
Single 90 x 190 3ft x 6ft3in One sleeper only
Small double 120 x 190 4ft x 6ft3in 60cm
Double 135 x 190 4ft6in x 6ft3in 67.5cm
King 150 x 200 5ft x 6ft6in 75cm

If you are unsure, use the NBF’s showroom test. Lie on your backs with your hands behind your heads, and if your elbows touch, the bed is too narrow for two. The same guide also advises a bed at least 10cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so anyone taller than about 180cm (5ft11in) will find a 190cm small double short. If two of you will share most nights, our double, king size and super king rankings cover the wider sizes.

Medium-firm for most, firm by choice

Choose medium-firm unless you already know you sleep better on a firm bed. In a randomised trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain published in The Lancet in 2003 (Kovacs et al.), those given a medium-firm mattress had better outcomes after 90 days than those on a firm one, for pain in bed (odds ratio 2.36) and for disability (odds ratio 2.10). A 2015 systematic review of 24 articles on controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan et al.) found a medium-firm mattress that the sleeper can adjust by inflation optimal for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment. None of the mattresses here is inflatable, so medium-firm is the part of that finding you can act on, and eight of the ten are sold as medium-firm. The Nectar Classic Hybrid is rated medium at 5 out of 10, and the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1400 Pocket Ortho, which Silentnight aims at sleepers with a heavier build, is the firm choice. Our firm mattress comparison has more of them.

Getting it into a small room

A 4ft bed usually goes into the smallest bedroom in the house, often up a narrow or turning staircase, so check how the mattress arrives. The Emma Original came rolled in a box when we tested it. Silentnight’s Comfort Breathe mattresses are made to order, with delivery within 14 days, and Silentnight’s guarantee page reserves its 10-year guarantee for the rolled Sleep Now range, so these two carry five years. Depth runs from 22cm on the Emma Original Lite to 28cm on the Silentnight 1400 Ortho, which needs deep-pocket fitted sheets.

Trial terms and the cost per night

In a spare room slept in a few nights a month, a problem takes longer to show, so the trial matters more than usual. Nectar gives 365 nights with a refund, Emma, Simba and Origin 200, OTTY and Panda 100. IKEA’s 365 nights and Silentnight’s 60 are exchanges rather than refunds, and Silentnight requires at least 28 nights of use before a swap. Retailers without a home trial can be stricter still, and Dunelm’s returns policy says an unwrapped mattress cannot be returned unless it is faulty, so keep one bought on such terms sealed until you are sure.

The NBF calculates that every £100 spent on a bed costs 3.9p a night over seven years, which puts the Emma Original, at £479 in small double at the time of writing, at under 19p a night and the IKEA Valevåg, at £179, at about 7p. The NBF’s bed buyers’ guide suggests asking whether a mattress needs replacing once it is seven to 10 years old, and lists occasional use of a spare bed among the things that change how long one lasts.

Methodology

How we rate

This ranking answers one question: which mattresses are the best buys in the UK small double size of 120 x 190cm, the 4ft x 6ft3in standard set out in the National Bed Federation’s size guide. Every mattress here is listed in that exact size, so continental 120 x 200cm models are left out, and the price we compare is the small double price, never the cheaper single a product card may start from. Firmness is judged against the medium-firm band the clinical evidence in the buying guide favours, and trial terms are read closely, because a spare-room bed may be slept on only a few nights a month.

Every mattress on Sleep Magazine carries the same five scores, and the overall score weights comfort 30%, support 25%, temperature 15% and value 30%. Ranks one to three are reserved for brands that run affiliate programmes, which is how Sleep Magazine is funded. From rank four the order follows the overall score, which is why the Origin Hybrid, the highest-scoring mattress on this page, sits fourth.

Dearer models such as the Emma Original Pro and the Simba Hybrid Pro score higher but cost £709 and £1,299 in small double, more than a guest room or a single sleeper usually needs; our main mattress ranking covers them. We tested the Emma Original and the Emma Original Lite at home, with our own photos. For the other eight we used each maker’s UK product page, published returns and guarantee terms and our own price checks, made on 28 September 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What size is a small double mattress in the UK?

A UK small double mattress measures 120 x 190cm, or 4ft x 6ft3in, according to the National Bed Federation's size guide. That is the same length as a standard 135 x 190cm double but 15cm narrower. The NBF notes that it is also known as a "three quarter" or a "queen" size.

Can two adults sleep on a small double mattress?

Two adults can share a small double now and then, but at 60cm of width each, against 67.5cm on a standard double, it is tight for every night. The National Bed Federation suggests it only "as an occasional bed for two people".

What is the best small double mattress in the UK?

The Emma Original is our best small double mattress for most people, a 25cm medium-firm hybrid at £479 in 120x190 with a 200-night trial. On a tighter budget, the Emma Original Lite costs £279 with the same trial and guarantee, and on specification and price alone the Origin Hybrid, at £356 with a 15-year warranty, is the highest-scoring small double we rank.

Should a small double mattress be firm or medium-firm?

Medium-firm suits most sleepers, and a 2003 Lancet trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain found better outcomes for pain in bed and for disability after 90 days on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones. If you prefer a firm surface, the Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1400 Pocket Ortho is the firm small double in this ranking, 28cm deep and double-sided.

Is a European small double the same as a UK small double?

No, a continental 120 x 200cm mattress is 10cm longer than the UK small double of 120 x 190cm, so it will not sit properly on a standard UK 4ft frame. None of the ten mattresses ranked here is sold in 120x200. The NBF advises a bed at least 10cm longer than the tallest sleeper, which makes any 190cm bed short for someone over about 180cm.

Can you buy mattress toppers and protectors in small double?

Yes, 120 x 190cm is a standard UK size for toppers and protectors, and the Emma Original Topper, for example, costs £199 in small double. Our mattress topper comparison and mattress protector comparison list the alternatives.

What is the cheapest good small double mattress for a guest room?

The IKEA Valevåg is the cheapest mattress in this ranking at £179 in small double, a 24cm pocket sprung mattress with five comfort zones and a 10-year guarantee. Its 365-night home trial is an exchange rather than a refund, so if you want the option of your money back, the Emma Original Lite at £279 comes with a 200-night refundable trial.

How long does a small double mattress last in a spare room?

A spare-room mattress tends to last longer than one slept on every night, because the National Bed Federation lists occasional use of a spare bed among the factors that set a mattress's life span. The NBF suggests reviewing a mattress once it is seven to 10 years old, and the guarantees on this page run from five years on the two Silentnight Comfort Breathe models to 15 years on the Origin Hybrid, with Nectar offering its Forever Warranty.
