The Silentnight Comfort Breathe 1400 Pocket Ortho is a 28cm, double-sided mattress with 1400 Mirapocket springs and breathable fibre layers on both faces, rated firm by Silentnight and priced from £499 for a single. Silentnight describes it as highly supportive for sleepers with a heavier build, and that is who it suits best.

A double-sided, tufted build

Unlike the 1000 and 1200, the 1400 Ortho has a comfort layer and a hand-tufted sleep surface on each side, so you can flip it as well as rotate it. Tufting pins the fillings in place, which helps a fibre mattress keep its shape.

Layer, top to bottom What Silentnight uses What it does
Sleep surface (both sides) Hand-tufted, hypoallergenic fabric Holds the fillings in place
Comfort layer (both sides) Comfort Breathe fibres Airflow and firmer pressure relief
Support 1400 Mirapocket pocket springs Firm, zoned support

Firm or medium-firm for back pain?

“Ortho” is a feel, not a medical claim, and the evidence is more nuanced than the name suggests. In the largest trial on the question, 313 adults with chronic low back pain were randomised to firm or medium-firm mattresses; after 90 days the medium-firm group reported less pain in bed and less disability (Kovacs et al., The Lancet, 2003). A 2021 review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Caggiari et al.) reached the same conclusion. So choose the 1400 because you like a firm surface or need more support for your weight, not because firmer is automatically better for backs.

We score it 8 out of 10 on firmness. Heavier sleepers benefit most, because the firmer spring unit resists sinking at the hips, which is where a softer mattress lets the spine bend.

Sizes and prices

UK size Dimensions (cm) Price at Silentnight
Single 90 x 190 £499
Small double 120 x 190 £649
Double 135 x 190 £649
King 150 x 200 £779
Super king 180 x 200 £949

Prices are Silentnight’s regular prices, checked in September 2026, and every size is made to order with delivery aimed within 14 days. Silentnight’s comfort exchange runs for 60 nights from delivery, can be used from night 28, and swaps the mattress for another Silentnight model rather than refunding it. It applies to silentnight.co.uk orders only. The guarantee lasts 5 years. Flipping and rotating regularly, which Silentnight recommends for this model, is also the easiest way to stretch it towards the 7 to 8 years the National Bed Federation recommends as a mattress lifespan.

Where it sits in the Comfort Breathe range

Against its siblings, the 1400 Ortho is the deepest and the only double-sided model. The Comfort Breathe 1000 is 24cm and medium/firm from £309 in a single, and the 1200 is 25cm with a mesh border from £379. If you want the firmer feel without paying for a second sleep surface, there is no cheaper firm option in this range, so the choice comes down to how much you value being able to flip the mattress.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the Comfort Breathe 1400 Ortho for heavier sleepers and back sleepers who genuinely prefer a firm bed, and for anyone who wants a mattress they can flip. Lighter side sleepers should choose a medium-firm model instead, since the best trial evidence favours medium-firm over firm for back pain.”
