The Simba Hybrid is a 25cm, five-layer mattress that combines 1,900 conical Aerocoil microsprings with graphite-infused Simbatex foam and a nine-zone foam base. Simba rates the feel medium-firm, which we place at 6 out of 10, and it is the model the rest of the Simba range is measured against, with a regular price from £699 for a single.

What is inside the Simba Hybrid?

The build is simpler than the Pro above it: one spring layer and no steel base. The layer list below is taken from Simba’s UK product page.

Layer Material What it does
1. Cover 500g knitted cover with zip-off top Machine washable, line dry
2. Comfort Simbatex foam with graphite, extra deep Open-structure cushioning that lets heat escape
3. Springs 1,900 25mm conical Aerocoil springs, titanium alloy, made in Leeds Respond to pressure, limit motion transfer
4. Core Thick open-structure CertiPUR foam Structural support and airflow
5. Base Nine-zone CertiPUR foam Firmer under hips and shoulders

Who should buy the Simba Hybrid?

Most sleepers who want a middle-of-the-road feel. A systematic review of 24 controlled trials in Sleep Health (Radwan et al., 2015) concluded that a medium-firm, custom-inflated (self-adjusted) mattress is optimal for sleep comfort, quality and spinal alignment; the medium-firm part is where the Hybrid sits. Back and combination sleepers are the natural fit. Couples will notice that the foam base gives softer edges than the steel-sprung Hybrid Pro, which is the main reason to pay more for the Pro. Within the range the Hybrid sits between the 20cm Essential, with up to 1,000 springs and a five-zone base, and the 28cm Pro, with up to 4,800 springs over steel. It has 900 more springs than the Essential and a nine-zone base, which is where most of the extra money goes.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Simba Hybrid is the sensible default in the range, medium-firm and 25cm deep for about 30% less than the Hybrid Pro in a double. Pick the Pro instead if you share the bed and sit on the edge a lot, because the Hybrid's all-foam base gives less perimeter support.”
