“Buy a Hypnos for its springs and its wool, then be honest with yourself about turning it. A double-sided Hypnos that never gets flipped settles unevenly and can lose its 10-year guarantee.”
How the Hypnos range is built
Every Hypnos mattress pairs pocket springs with natural fillings, and the number in the model name tells you the spring. The 6 in Wool Origins 6 means six active turns per coil, and the Hypnos FAQ says more turns make a spring more responsive and supportive. The fillings shape the feel as much as the springs do. Hypnos puts 16.3kg of British wool into a king-size Wool Origins 6, while the Luxury No Turn 8 and Wool Origins 10 add natural latex for a springier surface. None of them uses synthetic foam, a point the government’s King’s Awards for Enterprise blog made when Hypnos won its 2020 award for sustainable development, writing that “Hypnos’ beds are some of the most sustainable in the industry being 100% foam free and 100% recyclable”.
Specs from Hypnos; its feel ratings follow the order in which it lists each model’s tensions. Double prices from Bed Factory Direct (Legacy Origins III: Best Price Beds), checked 28 September 2026, Wool Origins 10 in firmer.
Double-sided or no-turn
Turning is the practical question that splits the range. Hypnos asks owners of its double-sided models to turn and rotate the mattress once a week for the first three months and every three to four months after that, and its guarantee terms say the 10-year cover lapses if a mattress is not turned or rotated as recommended. The same care guide says not to turn one on your own, because bending or rolling the mattress can damage the springs and also invalidates the guarantee. With a king-size Wool Origins 10 at 62.3kg that is a two-person job, while the 35.0kg Legacy Origins III is far easier. The Cotton Origins 6, Luxury No Turn 8 and Pillow Top Elite are single-sided, so you only swing them head to foot.
Tension, firmness and your back
Six of the eight models come in a choice of spring tension, and on Hypnos’s own feel scale the firmer option moves a mattress one step, from medium soft to medium on the Wool Origins 6. Only the Orthos Support 7 is sold as Firm or Extra Firm, and firmer is not automatically better for a bad back. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low back pain, published in The Lancet (Kovacs et al., 2003), the group on medium-firm mattresses reported less pain after 90 days than the group on firm ones, and the authors concluded that “A mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic non-specific low-back pain.”
Couples who disagree on firmness have a Hypnos-specific way round it. Apart from the pillow tops, Hypnos can build any model as a Zip and Link pair, two mattresses in different tensions zipped together, in king (2 x 75cm) or super king (2 x 90cm). The base changes the feel too. Hypnos says a slatted bedstead generally makes a mattress feel firmer than a sprung divan, and it requires slats no more than 7.5cm apart plus a central support rail from double size up.
What a Hypnos costs, and what you get for it
A Hypnos double runs from £999 for the Cotton Origins 6 to £2,679 for the Pillow Top Elite at the retailers we checked. At Bed Factory Direct a small double (120x190) costs exactly the same as a double on all seven Hypnos models it stocks, so the extra 15cm of width comes free.
Same retailers and date as above, sorted by double price. All but the Legacy Origins III also come as a 75x190 small single at the single price.
Those figures sit well above typical UK spending. In a November 2021 survey of 500 recent bed buyers by the National Bed Federation, 46% had spent up to £399 on their new bed and three quarters under £800, while 41% were replacing a mattress five years old or less. The NBF’s consumer site Bed Advice UK says most mattresses begin to lose shape and support after around 7 to 8 years, whereas Hypnos guarantees its mattresses for 10. Spread over that decade, a Wool Origins 6 double works out at about 45p a night at September 2026 prices. Hypnos sells only through retailers, many of which carry ranges exclusive to them, so a Hypnos on a shop floor may not appear on hypnosbeds.com at all.

Our best mattresses of 2026 ranks Hypnos against the wider market, and the Silentnight, Sealy and Sleepeezee comparisons cover other pocket-sprung ranges made in Britain.
