“Pick a Silentnight by its comfort layer first and its spring count second, because fibre, gel or memory foam on top changes how warm and how soft the bed feels far more than a few hundred extra springs. For most sleepers that points to a medium-firm Comfort Breathe model, and only side sleepers really need to pay more for memory foam or UltraGel.”
Choose the line before the spring count
Every mattress in this ranking is handmade in Silentnight’s UK factory, and its product pages say all mattresses are made to order, with delivery aimed within 14 days, or 48 hours on weekdays for the rolled Sleep Now range. The company says it has produced over 35 million mattresses since it started as Clarkes Mattresses in 1946. What separates the models is the line. Comfort Breathe mattresses put a breathable fibre layer over Mirapocket pocket springs, UltraGel models use a gel-infused foam instead, Lift Replenish uses latex, Memory Pocket memory foam, and Sleep Now is an all-foam mattress delivered rolled.
The spring count on the label matters less than that choice. Within Comfort Breathe, moving from 1,000 to 1,200 springs adds a centimetre of depth and a mesh airflow border, while the 1400 Pocket Ortho changes the whole character of the mattress to firm and double-sided.

Medium-firm suits most people, firm is a specialist choice
The core Comfort Breathe models are sold as medium/firm, and there is research behind that default. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 313 adults with chronic low-back pain, published in The Lancet in 2003, the group given medium-firm mattresses (5.6 on a European scale from 1, firmest, to 10, softest) had better results for pain in bed, pain on rising and disability after 90 days than the group on firm ones (2.3). That makes the Comfort Breathe 1000 and 1200 and the medium/firm Lift Replenish Hybrid 2000 the sensible starting points. The 1400 Pocket Ortho is the one firm model here, and Silentnight aims it at people with a heavier build.
Treat the labels as a guide rather than a measurement. Silentnight’s own page for the Memory Pocket 2000 calls it medium in the headline and medium firm in its firmness rating, and the Comfort Breathe 1200 Pocket is listed as both medium and medium/firm.
Warm or cool to sleep on
The comfort layer decides how warm a Silentnight feels far more than the spring count. The Comfort Breathe models put breathable fibre over the springs, and the 1200 adds a mesh border for side airflow. Memory foam, as in the Memory Pocket 2000, sleeps warmer than fibre, while the UltraGel Cool-to-touch 3000 relies on its SensICE fabric for a cool first touch. The Sleep Now Dual Climate is reversible, with a cooling side for summer and a soft-knit side for winter. If you overheat at night, a Comfort Breathe model is the safer buy than memory foam.

Trial, guarantee and when to replace
Silentnight’s trial is an exchange, not a refund. Under its comfort exchange terms you sleep on the mattress for at least 28 nights and can then swap it for another Silentnight within 60 days of delivery, with four limits:
- it covers only mattresses bought on silentnight.co.uk, not a Silentnight from another retailer;
- you cannot use it to change size;
- it works once per purchase;
- if you swap to a cheaper model, the difference is not refunded.
The pocket-sprung models carry a 5-year guarantee, and Silentnight gives 10 years only to its rolled Sleep Now mattresses such as the Dual Climate.
On timing, Silentnight’s own advice is to change a mattress every 7 to 10 years. In a National Bed Federation survey of 500 recent bed buyers, published in January 2022, 41% were replacing a mattress five years old or less, and 46% spent up to £399 on their new bed. Only one pocket-sprung model here fits that budget in a double, the Comfort Breathe 1000 at £399.
Sizes, sheets and toppers
Six of the seven pocket-sprung models come in all five UK sizes, from single (90x190) to super king (180x200). The Lift Replenish Hybrid 2000 has no small double, and the Sleep Now Dual Climate comes only as a single, double and king. Depth matters for bedding, since the UltraGel 3000 is 37cm and the Memory Pocket 2000 and UltraGel 2000 31cm, so check the pocket depth of your fitted sheets before ordering. If your current Silentnight is under seven years old and just feels too firm, a topper is the cheaper fix (see our best mattress toppers and Silentnight’s own toppers).
