Silentnight UltraGel Cool-to-touch 3000 reviewed

The Silentnight UltraGel Cool-to-touch 3000 is a 37cm pillowtop hybrid with 3000 springs, a gel-infused comfort layer and a cool-to-touch sleep surface, priced from £789 for a single. It is the premium cooling mattress in Silentnight’s range and comes in a soft or a firm version at the same price.

What is inside

The bullet points on the Silentnight product page say 3000 Mirapocket springs, but the detailed description is more precise: 2000 Mirapocket springs combined with 1000 mini springs. We use the detailed version.

Why the cooling matters

The cooling claim targets a real problem. In a review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno (2012) found that humid heat increases wakefulness and reduces both deep and REM sleep, and that normal sleep coincides with a bed climate of about 32 to 34°C. A cool-to-touch surface helps most in the first minutes in bed, while the gel layer and spring core keep air moving through the night.

The main drawbacks are cost and bulk. It is the most expensive Silentnight mattress in our comparisons, and at 37cm it needs extra-deep fitted sheets and a sturdy base.
