Comparison

Best IKEA mattresses

The best IKEA mattress for most UK buyers is a zoned pocket sprung model, chosen on construction and depth as much as on IKEA's own firm or medium firm label. This comparison ranks IKEA's current UK mattresses, sprung, hybrid, foam and natural, on construction, depth, cover care, customer ratings and the price in each UK size from Single to Super king. It also covers the 365-night 'Sleep on it' exchange, IKEA's mattress pads and the frames and slatted bases the mattresses need.

Best for memory foam fans

IKEA Åkrehamn Foam Mattress

For memory foam fans, the 20 cm IKEA Åkrehamn is the deepest all-foam mattress IKEA sells, with 50 kg/m³ memory foam under a plush 40 kg/m³ layer and five zones, at £299 in a Double. Durability is the doubt, since two reviews on IKEA's own product page describe it sagging within a year, and its 3.9/5 average from 1,096 reviews trails the Valevåg's 4.0/5.

Pros
  • Memory foam at 50 kg/m³, five zones
  • Cover machine washable at 60°C
  • Deepest IKEA all-foam model, 20 cm

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Start with the Valevåg in the firmness you think you want and treat the 365-night exchange as your safety net, because firmness labels are not standardised and a label is a starting point rather than a promise.”

The IKEA range side by side

The table joins IKEA’s UK specifications with its own customer ratings. Prices are for a UK Double.

Mattress Construction Depth (cm) Washable cover UK sizes Double (135x190) IKEA rating, Sep 2026

Read the firmness label with care

IKEA sells most models in firm and medium firm, at the same price on the Valevåg and the Vesteröy, and firmness labels are not standardised, so treat IKEA’s as a starting point. Construction tells you more: the Vesteröy has no comfort zones, the Valevåg five and the Vågstranda seven over two layers of springs, while the Ånneland and the Åkrehamn put memory foam near the surface. Medium firm is the sensible default for most adults, and a 2021 systematic review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Caggiari et al.) concluded that “a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and rachis alignment”.

What the 365-night exchange and the guarantee cover

IKEA’s ‘Sleep on it’ scheme is an exchange, not a refund. Under IKEA’s return policy you can swap a mattress once within 365 days, provided it is not dirty, marked or damaged. An upgrade costs the price difference, a cheaper replacement is credited to an IKEA Refund card, and IKEA charges £25 if it collects the old mattress. An unopened mattress can be returned for a refund within 365 days, and IKEA advises sleeping on a new one for a month before deciding.

Every mattress ranked here carries IKEA’s free 10-year guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. That covers faults, not the normal wear of long-term use. The National Bed Federation’s survey of 500 recent bed buyers (November 2021) found that 41% replace their mattress within five years, and a third of them do so because the old one is worn out.

Bonnell springs, thin foam and the two models left out

The three cheapest ranked models trade support for price. The Vestmarka and the Vadsö use Bonnell springs, 166 per m², which IKEA’s own Vestmarka page says “can transfer motion, meaning partners can feel your movements”. The 12 cm Åfjäll, two layers of 33 kg/m³ foam, is best kept for a day-bed or a guest bed used now and then.

Two IKEA adult mattresses sit outside the ranking, both made for day-beds. The Ågotnes is a single 10 cm layer of firm foam in single widths, at £65 for a Single, and the Vannareid is a 12 cm pocket sprung mattress sold only in continental 80x200.

Delivery, roll-packing and sizes

Most IKEA mattresses arrive roll-packed, and the Valevåg product page says a mattress may need about 72 hours to regain its full shape. IKEA sells UK sizes (Single 90x190, Small double 120x190, Double 135x190, King 150x200, Super king 180x200) next to continental ones, so measure the frame first: a continental 140x200 is not a UK Double.

IKEA mattress toppers and bundles

IKEA calls its toppers mattress pads. The Nordberget is a 4.5 cm memory foam pad (50 kg/m³) with a cover washable at 60°C, and the Valevåg with Nordberget costs £308 in a Double, the same as buying the two separately. The cheaper Vesteröy with the 4 cm Näsfjället foam pad costs £208 in a Double. A pad helps when the mattress supports you well but feels hard on the surface, the usual complaint about the Vesteröy, and it will not fix a sagging mattress. Our best mattress toppers comparison covers pads from other brands.

Frames, slatted bases and bed bundles

IKEA’s mattress pages specify a mattress base or a non-adjustable slatted base underneath. The Luröy slatted base costs £35 in a UK Double at the time of writing and is also sold in continental 80x200 and 90x200, so keep frame, base and mattress on one size standard. IKEA also sells complete sets, and the MALM bed frame with a Valevåg mattress costs £318 in a Double with the Luröy base and a midbeam included, or with a Vesteröy or Åbygda instead. If no IKEA model suits you, our best mattresses of 2026 ranks the wider UK market, and the foam and memory foam comparisons cover the alternatives to the Åkrehamn and Åbygda.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked IKEA’s UK mattresses from their ikea.com/gb product pages, read size by size on 28 September 2026 for price, depth, spring count, foam density, zoning and cover care.

Each overall score weighs comfort (30%), support (25%), temperature (15%) and value (30%), with a small editorial adjustment, so it can sit a point or two away from the raw weighted average. The first three places are awarded by role, because an IKEA buyer shops on price first. First place goes to the best all-rounder across sizes and price, second to the upgrade and third to the budget pick. From fourth place the order follows the overall score. That is why the Valevåg (8.0) ranks above the Vågstranda (8.1). In a Double it costs £179 against £349, and it is the only model IKEA sells in all five UK sizes.

The ranking covers ten of the twelve adult mattresses IKEA sells in the UK. The Bonnell-sprung Vestmarka and Vadsö and the thin Åfjäll rank last on score, and the day-bed Ågotnes and Vannareid are covered in the buying guide instead. Prices are IKEA’s standard UK prices at the time of writing (September 2026); where IKEA shows a “New lower price”, that is the price used. Customer ratings are IKEA’s own review averages on the same date. None of the IKEA links on this page is an affiliate link, so commission played no part in the order.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which IKEA mattress is best?

The IKEA Valevåg is the best IKEA mattress for most UK buyers, pairing a 24 cm five-zone pocket spring core with the widest size range, from Single to Super king including a 120x190 Small double, at £179 in a Double. Upgrade to the 28 cm Vågstranda for two layers of springs, or save with the Vesteröy, which IKEA customers rate 4.3/5.

What is the best IKEA double mattress?

In a UK Double (135x190) the IKEA Valevåg at £179 is our pick, with the Vesteröy at £149 as the budget choice and the Vågstranda at £349 for more spring support. Check that your bed takes a UK Double rather than a continental size before ordering.

Does IKEA sell single, king size and super king mattresses?

Yes, eight of the ten IKEA mattresses ranked here come in a UK Single (90x190) and eight in a UK King (150x200). Only the Valevåg and the Vågstranda are sold as a Super king (180x200), the Valevåg from £299, and only the Valevåg as a 120x190 Small double.

Can you return an IKEA mattress?

You can exchange an IKEA mattress once within 365 days under the 'Sleep on it' scheme, but it is an exchange rather than a refund and the mattress must not be dirty, marked or damaged. According to IKEA's return policy, a cheaper replacement is refunded as IKEA Refund card credit and collection costs £25. Only an unopened mattress can be returned for a refund.

Does IKEA sell cot mattresses?

Yes, IKEA sells cot mattresses in 60x120 and 70x140 cm, from the 8 cm Krummelur foam mattress at £49 to the 11 cm Jättetrött pocket spring mattress at £89, at the time of writing (September 2026). The NHS advises that babies sleep on a firm, flat mattress, and IKEA says there must be no gaps between the mattress and the edges of the cot, so check the fit before using one in another brand's cot.

Is an IKEA mattress topper worth buying?

An IKEA mattress pad is worth adding when your mattress supports you well but feels hard on the surface. The 4.5 cm Nordberget memory foam pad costs £129 in a Double, and IKEA sells it bundled with the Valevåg for £308, the same as buying both separately at the time of writing (September 2026).

What frame or base does an IKEA mattress need?

IKEA specifies a mattress base or a non-adjustable slatted base, such as the Luröy, which costs £35 in a UK Double at the time of writing. If you need a frame as well, the MALM bed frame with a Valevåg mattress costs £318 in a Double with the Luröy base included.

What happened to the IKEA Vesgantti mattress?

IKEA UK no longer lists the Vesgantti, and a search of IKEA's UK website on 28 September 2026 returned no result for it. The cheapest current IKEA sprung mattresses are the Bonnell-sprung Vadsö at £99 and Vestmarka at £129 in a Double, and the cheapest pocket sprung Double is the Vesteröy at £149.
