IKEA Åbygda Foam Mattress reviewed

The IKEA Åbygda is a 16 cm firm foam mattress made of just two layers, memory foam over a zoned polyurethane base, with a knitted cover you can remove and machine wash. At 16 cm deep, it is better suited to a guest room or a starter bed than to everyday use by heavier sleepers. This review covers the firm version; IKEA lists a medium firm version at the same prices.

Two layers, nothing more

According to the IKEA Åbygda product page, the top layer is polyurethane memory foam at 50 kg per cubic metre, which IKEA says relieves pressure on the spine and joints. Underneath sits polyurethane foam at 33 kg per cubic metre, cut into five comfort zones that are softer at the shoulders and hips. The cover is 100% recycled polyester, divides into two parts for the washing machine and can be washed at 60°C.

The comparison with the Åkrehamn shows where the money goes. Both share the same memory foam and base foam grades, so the extra cost of the Åkrehamn buys 4 cm of depth and a plush 40 kg/m³ top layer rather than denser foam.

Sizes, prices and terms

The Åbygda is sold in the UK standard sizes plus a continental 90x200 cm single. These are IKEA’s regular prices at the time of writing (September 2026).

IKEA’s free 10-year guarantee covers the complete mattress, and the IKEA UK return policy allows one exchange within 365 nights, with a £25 fee if IKEA collects. The Åbygda averages 4.1 out of 5 stars from 1,044 reviews on IKEA’s page. Its limits are depth and range: there is no Small double or Super king, and 16 cm of foam leaves little reserve for heavier sleepers.
