The IKEA Åkrehamn is a 20 cm medium firm foam mattress built from three foam layers, with five comfort zones and a cover you can take off and machine wash at 60°C. It sits in the middle of IKEA’s all-foam range: deeper and softer on top than the 16 cm Åbygda, and without the pocket springs of the Ånneland hybrid.

Three foam layers, from the top down

IKEA lists the layers on the IKEA Åkrehamn product page, together with the density of each foam. The memory foam layer is rated at 50 kg per cubic metre, the same grade IKEA uses in the Åbygda and the Ånneland, and the Åkrehamn adds a plush layer above it.

Layer Material Density Role according to IKEA
1 Plush polyurethane foam 40 kg/m³ Sink-in feel, spreads pressure
2 Polyurethane memory foam 50 kg/m³ Pressure relief for spine and joints
3 Polyurethane foam, 5 zones 33 kg/m³ Support, softer at shoulders and hips
Cover Quilted polyester with wadding n/a Removable, machine washable at 60°C

The washable cover is the Åkrehamn’s most practical advantage over IKEA’s sprung mattresses, whose covers can only be vacuumed. IKEA suggests dividing the cover into its two parts so it fits a domestic washing machine. The mattress arrives roll-packed and needs about 72 hours to recover its full shape.

Warmth and firmness

Memory foam is the trade-off. IKEA itself notes on the product page that memory foam reacts to body heat, so it can feel warmer, and may be slower to respond in a cool bedroom. Expect the slow sink of memory foam rather than a springy surface. This review covers the medium firm version; IKEA lists the firm one at the same size prices. For most adults that middle setting is a sensible starting point: a 2021 systematic review of 39 studies in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Caggiari et al.) concluded that a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment.

Sizes, prices and terms

The Åkrehamn is sold in three UK standard sizes, at IKEA’s regular prices at the time of writing (September 2026).

UK size Dimensions (cm) Price
Single 90x190 £199
Double 135x190 £299
King 150x200 £399

There is no Small double or Super king. The complete mattress carries IKEA’s free 10-year guarantee, and under the IKEA UK return policy you can exchange it once within 365 nights if the feel does not suit you. That scheme is an exchange, not a refund, and IKEA charges £25 if it collects the mattress. The Åkrehamn averages 3.9 out of 5 stars from 1,096 reviews on IKEA’s own page.

Unser Urteil

Fazit
„The IKEA Åkrehamn is the IKEA foam mattress we would pick if you want pressure relief from 50 kg/m³ memory foam and a cover you can wash at 60°C. Memory foam reacts to body heat, as IKEA itself notes, so very warm sleepers may be happier on one of IKEA's pocket sprung models.“
