Comparison

Best IKEA mattress toppers

IKEA sells its mattress toppers in the UK as mattress pads, and choosing one comes down to the foam inside, how deep it is and whether it is made in your bed size. A thin standard-foam pad, a springy high-resilience layer and a memory foam topper do quite different jobs, and IKEA's British singles, doubles and kings are not the continental sizes its catalogue uses elsewhere. The ranking below orders the range by our overall score and names the job each pad does best, from easing pressure on a firm mattress to softening a guest bed.

IKEA Nordberget Mattress Pad

Best overall

IKEA Nordberget Mattress Pad

The Nordberget is the IKEA topper to buy if your mattress feels hard at the shoulder and hip. Its memory foam softens with body heat and lets those pressure points sink in instead of pushing back. The foam is also half as dense again as the standard foam in the cheaper pads, so it should keep its shape longer. That durability is what the extra money buys, and a double costs £129, £40 more than the Nisseholm.

Very hot sleepers are the exception, since memory foam holds body heat, and our cooling mattress toppers suit them better.

Pros
  • Only memory foam pad IKEA sells in the UK
  • Densest foam in the range
  • Moulds around shoulders and hips
Cons
  • Holds body heat
  • Slower to turn over on
  • Dearest IKEA pad in every size

IKEA Nisseholm Mattress Pad

Runner-up

IKEA Nisseholm Mattress Pad

Restless sleepers and back sleepers should start with the Nisseholm. Its high-resilience cold foam pushes back as soon as you move, so you lie on the bed rather than in it and can turn over without climbing out of a hollow. At 5 cm it is also the deepest pad IKEA makes, and the double is £89. It ranks second because side sleepers with sore shoulders get less relief from it than from memory foam.

Pros
  • Deepest IKEA pad at 5 cm
  • Springy foam, easy to turn on
  • Cheaper than the Nordberget in every size
Cons
  • Less shoulder relief than memory foam
  • Slides unless the fitted sheet is snug

IKEA Näsfjället Mattress Pad

Best value

IKEA Näsfjället Mattress Pad

At £59 for a double, the Näsfjället is the cheapest way to add 4 cm of foam to a UK bed from IKEA. That is enough to take the edge off a new mattress that turned out firmer than you wanted. Its 33 kg/m³ standard foam will flatten sooner than the Nordberget's, so we would choose it for a mattress you plan to replace within a few years rather than one you expect to keep.

Pros
  • 4 cm of foam for a modest price
  • Softens a firm new mattress
Cons
  • Entry-level foam flattens sooner
  • No super king size

IKEA Nopakte Mattress Pad

Think of the Nopakte as a washable cushion for a spare bed. Its 2.5 cm of foam adds a little give on top, enough to make a hard guest or student mattress more welcoming for £29 in a single.

Pros
  • Cheapest topper IKEA sells
  • Freshens up a hard guest bed
Cons
  • Too thin to change support
  • Single and double only
  • Cover cannot be flipped

Buying advice

What to look for when buying

“Buy an IKEA pad for the surface you want, never to rescue a sagging mattress. Shoulder pain on a firm bed calls for the memory foam Nordberget, while a wish for softness without sinking points to the Nisseholm.”
IKEA pad Foam Density (kg/m³) Depth (cm) Cover UK sizes Packed weight, double (kg) Double price
Nordberget Memory foam 50 4.5 Reversible Single, double, king, super king 8.23 £129
Nisseholm High-resilience cold foam Not stated 5 Reversible Single, double, king, super king 6.77 £89
Näsfjället Standard foam 33 4 Reversible Single, double, king 4.00 £59
Nopakte Standard foam 33 2.5 One-sided Single, double 3.38 £39

All figures come from IKEA’s UK product pages, checked on 4 October 2026. IKEA does not publish a density for the Nisseholm’s cold foam.

Memory foam or springy foam

The foam type decides how an IKEA pad feels far more than its depth does. Memory foam, used only in the Nordberget, softens with warmth and moulds slowly around shoulders and hips, which is what a side sleeper on a hard mattress needs. The high-resilience foam in the Nisseholm pushes back straight away, so it suits people who turn over a lot. The plain polyurethane foam in the Näsfjället and Nopakte is the cheapest of the three and the first to flatten.

Research points the same way. In a 2018 crossover study published in PLOS One, healthy men slept on a high-rebound topper and on a 3.5 cm memory foam one, and in a separate daytime test the muscle effort needed to roll over was 53% to 66% lower on the springy topper. The springy topper in that study was made of polyethylene fibre, not foam, and the study was small and funded by its maker, so read it as a pointer towards the Nisseholm’s kind of feel rather than a test of it.

How deep is deep enough

IKEA’s pads run from 2.5 cm to 5 cm, which is thin next to the 7 to 10 cm toppers in our best mattress toppers ranking. Only the Nisseholm reaches 5 cm. The 4.5 cm Nordberget still ranks first because its memory foam moulds around the shoulder and hip, and that pressure relief is what most people buying a topper for a firm mattress are after. The National Bed Federation is blunt about the limits of any topper: “A mattress topper isn’t a quick fix for a mattress that’s past its prime.” If your mattress has a dip you can see, no IKEA pad will level it, and our best IKEA mattresses guide is the better place to start.

Buying an IKEA mattress with a topper

IKEA sells its Valevåg and Vesteröy pocket sprung mattresses as sets with a Nisseholm, Nordberget or Näsfjället pad. The set is a convenience rather than a discount. A Valevåg double with a Nordberget cost £308 when we checked, exactly the two list prices added together. Buying the pieces separately lets you pair any pad with any IKEA mattress, and the 365-night Sleep on it exchange applies to the mattress only, not to the pad.

Fit, straps and washing

All four pads are cut to IKEA’s British sizes, single 90x190, double 135x190, king 150x200 and super king 180x200 cm, so they match a UK mattress rather than a continental 140x200. None has corner straps or a non-slip base, so a fitted sheet deep enough to wrap both mattress and pad is what keeps it in place. IKEA also suggests laying one wide topper across two single mattresses pushed together to hide the gap between them. Two UK singles make 180x190 cm, so the super king pad, 180x200 cm, covers them with 10 cm left over at the foot, which a deep fitted sheet tucks away. Every cover zips off and goes in the machine at 60°C, the temperature the NHS recommends for washing bedding if you are allergic to house dust mites. If what you need is a barrier against spills, a topper is the wrong product, and our mattress protector ranking covers that job.

Methodology

How we rate

We ranked every mattress pad IKEA sells in the UK, which is its whole topper range. Each pad is scored on comfort (30%), support (25%), temperature (15%) and value (30%), and for these pads the scores rest on what IKEA publishes: the foam type, its density, the depth and the price in each UK size. We use the 5 cm depth that the National Bed Federation suggests on Bed Advice UK as a reference point rather than a cut-off, because for pressure relief the type of foam weighs more in our scoring than a few millimetres of depth. Density tells us how long the foam should keep its shape.

Prices, sizes and stock were read from ikea.com/gb on 4 October 2026, when all four pads were available for delivery in a double. The order follows the overall score. We do not earn commission on IKEA sales.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does IKEA sell mattress toppers in the UK?

Yes. IKEA UK calls its toppers mattress pads and sells four of them: the Nopakte (2.5 cm), the Näsfjället (4 cm), the Nordberget (4.5 cm of memory foam) and the Nisseholm (5 cm).

Which IKEA mattress topper is best?

The Nordberget is the best IKEA topper for most people with a firm mattress, because its 50 kg/m³ memory foam relieves pressure at the shoulder and hip. If memory foam feels too warm for you or you move a lot in the night, choose the 5 cm Nisseholm instead.

Does IKEA have a memory foam mattress topper?

The Nordberget is IKEA's only memory foam topper in the UK, 4.5 cm deep and £129 for a double.

What is the difference between an IKEA mattress pad and a mattress protector?

A mattress pad changes how the bed feels, while a protector is a thin washable layer that guards the mattress against sweat and spills. IKEA's protectors start at £10 for a Luddros double, and the waterproof Sotnätfjäril costs £35 in a double (prices checked in October 2026). Many people use both, with the protector over the pad.

Can I buy an IKEA mattress with a topper?

Yes, IKEA sells the Valevåg and Vesteröy mattresses as sets with a Nisseholm, Nordberget or Näsfjället pad. The set costs the same as buying the mattress and the pad separately.

Does IKEA sell a single mattress topper?

All four IKEA pads come in a 90x190 cm single, priced at £29 for the Nopakte, £49 for the Näsfjället, £69 for the Nisseholm and £99 for the Nordberget.

Can you return an IKEA mattress topper?

Yes, within 365 days under the IKEA return policy. An unopened pad gets a full refund, and an opened one is refunded to an IKEA refund card as long as IKEA does not consider it used. The 365-night Sleep on it exchange covers mattresses, not pads.

Does IKEA make a topper for sofa beds?

Yes, the Klagshamn is a 3 cm foam pad sized 140x200 cm for IKEA sofa beds with that sleeping area, including the Friheten, and it costs £70. Its cover comes off and washes at 60°C.
