The IKEA Vatneström is a 26 cm pocket sprung mattress whose comfort layers are latex, wool and cotton rather than polyurethane foam, which sets it apart from foam-topped IKEA models such as the Valevåg and Vågstranda. It has five comfort zones, 218 pocket springs per square metre and a firm feel, and it is sold only in Double and King. This review covers the firm version; IKEA lists a medium firm version at the same prices.

What goes into it

The material list on the IKEA Vatneström product page reads more like a traditional British bed than a bed-in-a-box. Instead of a roll-packed foam block you get a steel spring unit, a pad of coir and natural latex, latex foam filling, wool wadding and a cotton ticking with linen-blend sides and fabric handles.

Component Material (IKEA)
Top ticking and underside 100% cotton
Filling Cotton, wool wadding, latex foam
Protection pad Coir and natural latex
Spring unit Steel pocket springs, 218 per m², 5 zones, edge to edge
Side ticking and handles 53% linen, 47% viscose
Depth 26 cm
Delivery format Flat-packed, not roll-packed

Because it contains wool, the Vatneström is not a vegan mattress. It also arrives flat rather than rolled, and IKEA recommends two people to lift it (a packed King weighs 56 kg), which matters if you are collecting it from a store yourself.

IKEA says the natural materials help to regulate temperature on both warm and chilly nights, and advises using the Vatneström on a mattress base or a non-adjustable slatted bed base. According to the product page, it has been tested for durability to EN 1957 and meets the BS 7177 flammability requirements.

Feel

Latex and coir make a springy, fairly dense layer over the steel unit, and the springs run edge to edge, so the whole surface is usable. We rate the Vatneström firm, 7 out of 10 on our scale where 10 is firmest. That suits back and front sleepers better than lighter side sleepers, who may want the medium firm version. IKEA publishes no figures for its temperature claim, so treat that as the maker’s description rather than a measured result.

Sizes, prices and terms

These are IKEA’s regular prices at the time of writing (September 2026).

UK size Dimensions (cm) Price
Double 135x190 £699
King 150x200 £799

The Vatneström falls under IKEA’s ‘Sleep on it’ scheme, so the IKEA UK return policy lets you exchange it once within 365 nights, with a £25 fee if IKEA collects it. The complete mattress carries IKEA’s free 10-year guarantee. The cover cannot be washed, only cleaned with upholstery shampoo. The Vatneström averages 3.9 out of 5 stars from 638 reviews on IKEA’s own page.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the IKEA Vatneström if you want latex, wool and cotton instead of polyurethane foam over a pocket spring unit, with a firm feel and an edge-to-edge spring unit. It is sold only in Double and King, so single sleepers and Super king owners need a different model.”
